Doja Cat is entering a new bold era.

In her cover story for V Magazine, which was published on Tuesday morning, the rap and hip-hop artist revealed that her upcoming studio album will lean heavily into pop and 80s influences, which is very different from her previous tracks.

Doja Cat, born Amala Dlamini, rose to mainstream fame in late 2019/early 2020 on TikTok with the viral success of her hit "Say So." Known for her unique blend of pop, rap, R&B, hip-hop and her Internet humor, she had already built a strong following with earlier tracks like "Mooo!" and her 2018 debut album Amala. Her stardom continued with the critically acclaimed album Planet Her in 2021, solidifying her as one of the industry's most versatile and innovative rappers.

Though there isn't an official release date for her upcoming album Vie, it is set to be released in mid-2025. Her latest album was Scarlet, which was released in September 2023, almost two years ago. Vie, which means "life" in French, will be her fifth studio album.

"Where I am creatively right now is based in where I was, I want to kind of swim back upstream, so to speak, and go back where I was, and just re-trim and evolve everything," Doja admitted to V.

According to the magazine, the 29-year-old's new album is rich with various influences that date all the way back to 40 years ago. "I have so many things that float around in my brain when it comes to the '80s." Even though she was born in 1995, she is aware that she has "no experience of the '80s or any relation to it in that sense," but she sees that decade as "a dream world concept, or dream-core."

Doja explained that she wanted to "play with that nostalgia by using these Lo-Fi sounds and samples and things that reminded you of something from your childhood, but it wasn't on the nose '80s."

Even though Doja posted two years ago on X that she did not want to make pop music anymore, which is now deleted, she seems to be taking that back. After releasing Scarlet, the "Kiss Me More" singer has mostly been collaborating with other artists and has started dabbling with pop music again. For instance, she collaborated with BLACKPINK's Lisa in her song "Born Again" alongside RAYE, which was released in February 2025.

"I do want to be self-aware enough to admit the fact that this is a pop-driven project. I know that I can make pop music, and pop is just that it's popular," she told V, and she could be referring to the mixed reactions she got when she released Scarlet. "What I want to avoid is that little monster that just wants success...If, for any reason, a project of mine does a little less good than the last one, I don't want to be up in arms and upset about it. I want to embrace that."
