In 2023, Doja Cat announced that she was saying goodbye to pop music because it wasn't "exciting" to her

But in a recent conversation with V Magazine, she shared that her upcoming album, Vie, will be "a pop-driven project"

"I know that I can make pop music, and pop is just that it's popular," she told the outlet

In an interview with V Magazine published on Tuesday, July 1, the pop star revealed what fans can expect from her forthcoming album, Vie.

The Grammy-winning singer, 29, shared that she's focusing this new album on pop music, despite saying "no more pop" in 2023. At the time, she added, "pop isn't exciting to me anymore. I dont wanna make it," per V Magazine. She also noted that her pop music, specifically albums Planet Her and Hot Pink, "were cash-grabs."

"I do want to be self-aware enough to admit the fact that this is a pop-driven project," she told the outlet of Vie. "I know that I can make pop music, and pop is just that it's popular."

"It starts to become a bit of a thing that's viewed as a sport by people who are just bystanders to it, who enjoy it, but maybe also don't respect it or what it is, which is just music," she continued.

"There are some people who don't see it as music," the singer noted. "They see it as if this is some kind of football for girls and gays."

The "Kiss Me More" singer also shared that Vie's concept "is very pointed towards love, romance, and sex—and discourse in relationships," adding, "Really just relationships in general, and relationships with yourself, even."

While music generally has songs about breakups and "how we're just kind of sick of men," she only has one song on Vie with those sentiments, she said. Instead, the new album is about her hopefulness. "[Vie] is very much about love in a way that reflects how I want it to be in the future—my hope, my hopefulness. What I hope it could be."

While she acknowledged that this is a "pop-driven" album, she will also rap for a good portion of the album. "I have a lot more knowledge of how to use my voice as an instrument, more than I ever have in my life," she said.

The "Say So" singer also explained that while she wants the album to be popular, she's focused on other technicalities, like the general sound.

"I want to focus more on: how does the mix sound? Do I even need these instruments here? Do I need to recut this verse?" she told V Magazine. "It's how things sound that makes the music worth listening to. I would not be an artist if I didn't care, right?"

"If for any reason a project of mine does a little less good than the last one, I don't want to be up in arms and upset about it," she added. "I want to embrace that."
