Cyndi Lauper may be best known for her iconic 1983 hit "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," but she can get serious when necessary.

The 1980s pop icon took to Instagram on Friday, Sept. 19 to lend her support to her friend, embattled late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel following his suspension from Disney's ABC after the FCC and the network affiliates complained about Kimmel's comments regarding the accused killer of Charlie Kirk.

Lauper posted a photo Kimmel wearing a T-shirt bearing the words, "GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUNDATMENTAL RIGHTS," an effort that the pop singer was supporting back in May.

"Jimmy - Thank you for supporting me and so many others. From childhood cancer to ALS to fire relief, you constantly use your platform to shine a light and help others. As a comedian and talk show host, you help us find humor in the darkest of times,"Lauper wrote in the caption.

The singer also added a few quotes from two well-known novelists.

"These are regimes whose fear of unmonitored writing is justified because truth is trouble." -- Toni Morrison"If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should have behaved better." -- Anne Lamott

Political debate in the comments

Those who commented on Lauper's post, had varied responses, with some breaking into a debate about Kimmel, Kirk and women's rights.

"I stand with Charlie Kirk. I am Charlie Kirk...," wrote one, as well as several others.

"I stand with Cyndi & Jimmy !" countered another.

"What rights don't girls have? Can you name one?" asked another.

"Abortion rights and Healthcare especially when it comes to high risk pregnancies and miscarriages in red states," another pointed out.

Another person who responded vowed to continue to support Lauper, but claimed she was "misinformed."

"Still a fan and nobody should say "I'm unfollowing you" that's what they do on the left and we are better than that.....having said that Cyndi is a prime example of a typical celeb who is totally misinformed and refuses to get full story," they wrote.

"We're with you all the way... I stand with Jimmy Kimmel always," another fan wrote.

Yet another person who responded saw things completely differently.

"Jimmy got what he deserved. Hopefully you will too," they wrote.

Lauper heads into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and stars in TV special

Lauper, who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Nov. 8, recently wrapped up her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour. The final two nights of the trek were taped for A Grammy Salute to Cyndi Lauper: Live from the Hollywood Bowl, which will air Oct. 5 on CBS and stream on Paramount+. The concert special features performances and appearances by Joni Mitchell, Cher, SZA, John Legend and more.
