Questions have been raised about the Winns since a report in The Observer newspaper, and on July 9, Raynor released a lengthy and detailed statement

The author of a best-selling non-fiction book, made into a film starring Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs, is defending herself against claims she misrepresented her backstory.

Raynor Winn released a lengthy statement on her website on Wednesday, July 9, denying claims that she had misled readers of her memoir, made by a British newspaper, The Observer, which have ignited the publishing world.

"Over the past few days, I have had vitriol poured on me from all quarters, along with threats directed at me, my family, and our children," Winn wrote. "It has been incredibly hard to remain silent...but I can now speak up."

Winn wrote The Salt Path about how she and her husband, Moth (short for Timothy) — who suffered from a debilitating condition called corticobasal degeneration (CBD) – were jobless and homeless. According to a summary of the book from the publisher, Penguin, they then made "the brave and impulsive decision to walk the 630 miles of the sea-swept South West Coast Path, from Somerset to Dorset, via Devon and Cornwall," in England.

"Finding health in nature and showing resilience against the elements and the terrain," the book is "an unflinchingly honest, inspiring and life-affirming true story of coming to terms with grief and the healing power of the natural world," the publisher's description adds.

According to The Mayo Clinic, Corticobasal degeneration is a rare disease that causes areas of the brain to shrink and nerve cells to break down and die. People with this disease have trouble with movement, while other symptoms include poor coordination, stiffness, trouble thinking, and trouble with speech or language.

The book, which was published in 2018, has gone to sell more than 2 million copies, per the BBC. Then, in May, a film adaptation starring Anderson and Isaacs was released, garnering it even more attention.

But, on July 5, U.K. newspaper The Observer disputed some of Winn's claims and suggested that the couple lost their home in North Wales after Winn allegedly defrauded her employer of $87,000 — and not because of a bad business deal as she claims in The Salt Path. Moreover, medical experts interviewed by the outlet were also skeptical about Moth's condition, given his lack of acute symptoms. While those with CBD are typically expected to live for six to eight years from diagnosis, eighteen years after his diagnosis, Moth walked the London Marathon in 2024, per The Times.

Earlier in the week, Raynor's publishers, Penguin, said they undertook "all due diligence" before the book was released, the BBC reported.

Raynor initially issued a shorter statement, saying, "The Salt Path lays bare the physical and spiritual journey Moth and I shared, an experience that transformed us completely and altered the course of our lives."

And on July 9, she fought back with a much more detailed denial on her website. She called The Observer's story "grotesquely unfair" but admitted she was "truly sorry" for "mistakes" made while she was working for her former employer, Martin Hemings, whom the outlet accused her of defrauding.

"For me, it was a pressured time. It was also a time when mistakes were being made in the business. Any mistakes I made during the years in that office, I deeply regret, and I am truly sorry," she wrote.

"Mr Hemmings made an allegation against me to the police, accusing me of taking money from the company," she went on. "I was questioned, I was not charged, nor did I face criminal sanctions. I reached a settlement with Martin Hemmings because I did not have the evidence required to support what happened."

Raynor also revealed two letters, with redacted sections, from neurologists, which she says prove that her husband has been treated for CBD (or CBS) "for many years."

"This is deeply personal information that no one should ever be forced to share. The redacted sections are for the personal privacy of Moth and the doctors involved," she explained.

"Among the Observer's many accusations, the most heartbreaking is the suggestion that Moth has made up his illness. This utterly vile, unfair, and false suggestion has emotionally devastated Moth, who has fought so hard against the insidious condition of Corticobasal Syndrome," she emotionally added.

Raynor went on, "We will always be grateful that Moth's version of CBS is indolent, its "slow progression," (as she refers to it in The Salt Path) has allowed us time to discover how walking helps him. Others aren't so lucky. The effect of the suggestion that Moth has made up this condition has been absolutely traumatising for him."
