Stephenie Meyer, the author behind the beloved book series that started with Twilight, looked back on the books' legacy in a new interview, while also hinting at a possible return to the world of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen.

The 51-year-old sat down with journalist Juju Chang on Good Morning America to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of the first book, Twilight, in 2005. Meyer then published three sequels, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn.

During the conversation, Chang asked Meyer, "What do you think Edward and Bella would be doing today?" Unexpectedly, the question sparked an interesting response from the author, as she teased the possibility of more stories set in the characters' fictional universe.

"For me, Bella and Edward are frozen where Breaking Dawn ended," Meyer began, before adding the enlightening note, "I have other stories outlined that I don't know that I'll ever get to."

But she also made a promise to fans that they would get to see the stories, even if they're still in the outline stages, at some point: "I'll have somebody disseminate them after my death, my outlines, if I never get around to it. But to me, the stories go on."

In the interview, Meyer also shared her honest thoughts on the lasting legacy of Twilight and how so many people still love the books.

"What's it like 20 years later, and your fans are just as into it?" asked Chang, to which Meyer replied, "I don't even know how to process that. I wasn't expecting fans when I started this."

"To be back here, and still have people care? I mean, it's really, really flattering. But I never expect that to last. It's bizarre to me that 20 years later, I'm back here talking to you," she concluded.

Meyer Previously Explored More Twilight Stories

In 2008, shortly before the first movie came out, several chapters of a book from Meyer called Midnight Sun, which is a retelling of Twilight from Edward's point of view, were leaked online. Fans were eager to read the entire novel, but Meyer put it on hold for over a decade.

Finally, in 2020, Meyer released the finished version of Midnight Sun, and it is set to become an animated series on Netflix soon. The author also published a gender-swapped version of Twilight in 2015 called Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined.

Meyer's Bestselling Book Series Became a Popular Film Franchise

Three years after the first book came out, Twilight was adapted into a movie starring Kristen Stewart as Bella and Robert Pattinson as Edward. Also in the cast were Billy Burke, Anna Kendrick, Gil Birmingham, Taylor Lautner, and Nikki Reed, to name a few.

A second film, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, came out in 2009, followed by The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, in 2010. The final book was adapted into two films, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, released in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Like the books, the movies were a roaring success and still have a strong impact on fans of all ages.
