Jimmy Kimmel's studio was the site of protests Wednesday

While Jimmy Kimmel Live is often the place for late-night jokes about politics and everything else, it was the setting of a protest Wednesday, hours after ABC confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the series had been preempted indefinitely.

This followed an announcement from Nexstar Media Group, which owns many local stations, that its ABC affiliates would not air the Emmy-winning show following Kimmel's comments about the man suspected of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

See the protesters and Kimmel leaving his studio in the video below, captured by news station NBCLA:

"Jimmy Kimmel did nothing but point out some of the hypocrisies of these fascists, and for this, he is being canceled and he is being threatened," one protester says in video captured on Hollywood Boulevard outside of the studio where Kimmel tapes in the El Capitan Entertainment Centre. The speaker said the intent for Kimmel's critics was "go after anybody that is opposing them."

Kirk, a conservative activist, died Sept. 10, after he was gunned down during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University. The 31-year-old had been a confidant of President Donald Trump, who had claimed in July that Kimmel would be "next to go," following CBS pulling the plug on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert that month.

Kimmel had been a staunch supporter of Colbert, even endorsing him to beat his own show in the category of Outstanding Talk Series at Sunday's Emmys. Indeed, Colbert won.

On Monday's episode of Kimmel's show, the host said of MAGA's response to Kirk's alleged killer: "We had some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and with everything they can to score political points from it."

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray later said that the mother of suspect Tyler Robinson told authorities that her son "had started to lean more to the left" politically in the past year, according to NBC News.

Trump gloated about Kimmel's suspension, writing on his Truth Social account: "Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED. Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done. Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that's possible."

He added, "That leaves Jimmy [Fallon] and Seth [Meyers], two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC!!! President DJT."
