The director reveals the impression is so good that he sometimes finds himself doing the same "heightened" gestures when he's directing Hanks

Hanks shares the key element for nailing a Ron Howard impression

After over 40 years of friendship and film collaborations, Ron Howard admits Tom Hanks' impression of him has an uncanny appeal.

"I think it started on a [David] Letterman appearance," says Howard, 71, in this week's PEOPLE cover story. "And somehow Tom just launched into this impression of me. Now, I get kind of excited on a set, and I don't always finish my sentences completely. I'm pretty energized and I talk with my hands."

"So Tom does this — I don't think it's a very accurate impression," he adds with a smile. "But it's me saying, 'Alright now. Okay, that's good. Alright, that's good. But now the next time you try it, how about if you were upside down? What if we just flipped it?' "

"He goes a little broader than that," says Howard. "Kind of a heightened version of me. He goes even crazier. But now sometimes I find that when I'm even directing Tom, I wind up doing his version of me directing him, instead of just being me. I don't know what that's all about."

The key element, says Hanks, 69, is simple: "Repeat 'Okay! Okay! That's good! That's good.…' "

Howard's enthusiasm for storytelling, as seen in his new film, Eden, a true-life 1930s survival thriller about a small European colony on a remote island in the Galapagos, is one of the director's trademarks.

After making such crowd-pleasing favorites together as Apollo 13 (now celebrating its 30th anniversary with an exclusive release in IMAX, starting Sept. 19, for one week only) as well as Splash and The Da Vinci Code trilogy, Hanks shares one of his favorite things about their many collaborations.

"Ron gathers us all to work on the script, the beats, the characters and the theme of the story, then shoots! shoots! shoots!" says Hanks. "It's an intensive approach to getting every shot and angle and moment possible."

Now that they've worked together over so many decades, Howard can also do a pretty good impression of Hanks.

Says Howard with a laugh, "I just... 'Mmm, so let me get this straight.' He gets this imperious kind of a look and then he is, 'Fine, fine, fine, whatever you want. Roll it. Here we go.' "

"He's great to direct," adds Howard.
