Donald Trump blasts 'insecure' Seth Meyers, 'Late Night' contract extension

After questions about the politics behind Stephen Colbert's late-night exit, President Donald Trump is now aiming at fellow host Seth Meyers.

Trump took to Truth Social early Wednesday, Aug. 27, to address a "sick rumor" that Meyers' contract with NBC has been extended.

"Fake News NBC extended the contract of one of the least talented Late Night television hosts out there, Seth Meyers," Trump wrote. "He has no Ratings, Talent, or Intelligence, and the Personality of an insecure child. So, why would Fake News NBC extend this dope's contract. I don't know, but I'll definitely be finding out!!!"

NBC extended "Late Night with Seth Meyers" back in May 2024, in a contract through 2028. Meyers, like other late-night hosts, is a frequent critic of the president and his administration.

USA TODAY has reached out to NBC for comment.

Why was Stephen Colbert canceled?

Trump's comments come after CBS canceled "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," which is set to end in May 2026. The cancellation prompted outrage and allegations that the network's parent company, Paramount, caved to political pressure, given Colbert's criticism of Trump and its need to get a merger with Skydance Media approved by his administration. But CBS said canceling the show was "purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late-night."

Stephen Colbert is out at CBS. Is all of late-night TV officially doomed?

In a conversation with Dax Shepard on the "Armchair Expert" podcast released on Monday, July 28, Meyers expressed concern over his show being canceled.

"I shifted from fearing that I wouldn't be good enough, and now, my fear is weirdly more outside of my control, which is at some point, the ecosystem might not support it," he said in the interview, recorded before the cancellation of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert."

He added: "I guess that's better than thinking it's your fault, but it is weird to not feel any control over it."
