Key Points -

Oscar Nuñez reprises his role as Dunder Mifflin accountant Oscar Martinez on The Paper, Peacock's new sitcom set in the same world as The Office.

His character is head accountant of The Truth Teller, a historic but failing newspaper in the Midwest led by a chaotic managing editor, Esmeralda Grand (Sabrina Impacciatore).

Nuñez doesn't believe his former boss, Michael Scott (Steve Carell), would get along too well with his new boss, Esmeralda.

Former Dunder Mifflin accountant Oscar Martinez (Oscar Nuñez) returns on The Paper, Peacock's upcoming comedy set in the same universe as the cult sitcom The Office.

Premiering with all 10 episodes on Sept. 4, The Paper follows the same documentary crew that immortalized the dysfunctional Dunder Mifflin workplace as they find new subjects in the newsroom of The Truth Teller, a historic but failing Midwestern newspaper in Toledo, Ohio. At the helm is chaotic managing editor Esmeralda Grand (Sabrina Impacciatore), who finds her newsroom turned upside down with the arrival of Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson), the newly elected editor-in-chief with an infectious passion for old-school journalism. Ned works to revive the paper back to its glory days, recruiting the existing, wholly unequipped staff as reporters — including one recognizable accountant.

Yep, Oscar has relocated from Scranton, Penn., in the years since The Office wrapped in 2013, working as the paper's head accountant. He gets caught up in Esmeralda's schemes as she works to undermine Ned. Oscar can't seem to escape kooky bosses, having already survived the antics of Steve Carell's Michael Scott. What would Dunder Mifflin's self-proclaimed world's best boss think of Oscar's newest boss? Nuñez has some thoughts.

"He'd probably be a little bit intimidated," Nuñez tells Entertainment Weekly for our The Paper cover story, out now. "He'd probably try to hit on her first and then probably take a step back. They're a little bit similar. I think she's either going to be a rival or he is going to try to get a date with her. One of those two things. I don't think they're going to be friends."

The actor says reviving his beloved character was "like riding a bicycle." "He's probably glad to get out of Scranton," he says of his character now. "And I hope he's getting more money."

It's been more than a decade since The Office finished its nine-season run, but the legacy continues to endure — especially as the sitcom finds a new generation of fans in the era of streaming. "I knew it was going to be a good show. I didn't know it was going to be such a huge hit," Nuñez says. "We've had people with babies who say, 'When we were in the delivery room, we had [the show on] on a loop.'"

The most meaningful fan interactions, however, are the ones with the LGBTQ community — even though Nuñez admittedly forgot that his character was queer. "Many times, I'll go to a convention and people come up and they're like, 'You helped me come out of my closet,'" Nuñez says. "He's not the first gay character on TV, but for some people he is."
