Chris Columbus, who directed the first two Harry Potter movies, weighed in on recent photos from the set of HBO's new TV adaptation

Calling the upcoming series "more of the same" after the movies, Columbus asked, "What's the point?"

Nick Frost, taking over the role of Hagrid from the late Robbie Coltrane, is "wearing the exact same costume that we designed," the filmmaker said

Chris Columbus, director of the first two Harry Potter movies, is getting candid about the upcoming TV series adaptation.

"Part of me was like: What's the point?" said the filmmaker, 66, on The Rest Is Entertainment podcast of seeing photos of Nick Frost filming the HBO show as Hagrid alongside Dominic McLaughlin as Harry.

Frost, 53, is "wearing the exact same costume that we designed for Hagrid," said Columbus, referring to the character in 2001's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone played by the late Robbie Coltrane. "I thought the costumes and everything was going to be different, but it's more of the same. It's all going to be the same."

The two new actors were spotted filming what appeared to be Hagrid taking Harry to the Leaky Cauldron, a scene from the first of J.K. Rowling's beloved book series. With a long, scraggly hairdo and beard, Frost's Hagrid wore corduroy pants and a few layers of jackets under a large coat.

"It's very flattering for me, because I'm like, that's exactly the Hagrid costume that we designed," Columbus added. "So part of it is really exciting, so I'm excited to see what they're going to do with it. Part of it is sort of deja vu all over again."

Columbus, speaking to The Rest Is Entertainment host Richard Osman about his career, from Home Alone to The Thursday Murder Club, indicated he was not "jealous" of HBO revisiting the magical world of Harry Potter.

"It's time to move on," the director said. "I'm really proud of those films, the first three that I was involved with, and I'm moving on."

Columbus directed Sorcerer's Stone and its sequel, 2002's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, later producing 2004's Alfonso Cuarón-directed installment Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In January, he told PEOPLE he thought the new TV series is "a spectacular idea," adding, "I look forward to seeing what they're trying to do with it."

Back in 2021, Columbus told The Hollywood Reporter he was open to helming a movie adaption of the Broadway hit Harry Potter and the Cursed Child if the stars ever aligned.

The Thursday Murder Club, adapted from the 2020 novel of the same name, is on Netflix Aug. 28.
