A fan-favorite story is officially heading to theaters.

Parents magazine gave readers the first look at The Pout-Pout Fish, an animated adaptation of the New York Times best-selling book by Deborah Diesen and illustrator Dan Hanna.

The film, produced by Macmillan Publishers, will hit theaters on March 20, 2026, giving new life to a story that's been part of family reading routines for years. The movie will star Parks and Recreation alum Nick Offerman as the voice of Mr. Fish, bringing his signature dry wit to the ocean's most lovable grump.

The short clip, shared via Instagram on Oct. 15, shows the underwater world readers know so well — bright reefs, expressive sea creatures, and, of course, the famously pouty fish himself. "Sea it in theaters March 20, 2026," the caption teased.

The Excitement Is Palpable

Fans immediately filled the comments section with excitement.

One user wrote, "Yesss!! Love to see incredible children's books come to life on the big screen," as another added, "Yes!!! I love the book, and can't wait to see it on the big screen."

For many, the reaction wasn't just about the movie — it was about the memories the book carries.

A Story Generations Grew Up With

First published in 2008, The Pout-Pout Fish tells the story of a downcast fish who believes he's stuck spreading "the dreary-wearies" until a kind encounter changes his view — and his pout. The gentle rhymes and cheerful illustrations struck a chord with parents and kids alike, turning it into a staple of bedtime reading and a New York Times Best Seller.

Since then, it's grown into a full series of picture books, board books, and early readers. One parent commented, "Ahhh omg my son had me read this 20 times a night!! I can't wait to watch with him!" — a line that sums up the emotional tie so many families have with the story.

With its colorful world and heartwarming message about finding joy, The Pout-Pout Fish movie is shaping up to be one of 2026's must-see family films — the kind that brings generations back to the same story, this time on the big screen.
