Clint Eastwood can see the future, apparently, and it's looking mighty bright for one of today's biggest stars.
While promoting his upcoming memoir, The Uncool, which will be published next month, director Cameron Crowe revealed in a wide-ranging interview with The New York Times that Eastwood once told him his prediction for who will be a legend 100 years from now: Tom Cruise.
The revelation came about when the Jerry Maguire and Vanilla Sky director was asked about his perspective on Tom Cruise's career in the last 10 years, during which the actor has focused on big-budget films like the Mission: Impossible series, which the outlet noted are "very different from the character-driven performances that he gave for [Crowe]." The outlet then asked if he thinks Cruise's interests have changed since the two worked together in the aforementioned films.
"I see that there's a time coming, and it might have already started, where he's going to segue into character roles as strongly as he segued into doing action movies of the highest quality," Crowe said of Cruise. "That Paul Newman character phase is just around the corner and will fry people's minds."
He continued, "I think what Tom does is he becomes an absolute student in whatever he's attaching himself to. Of course he's going to have the best stunts, of course he's going to have done the work to know how to do this and that — when that Paul Newman phase starts, he's going to apply the same type of passion to it, and it's going to be amazing."

The talk of Cruise reminded Crowe of a party at which he and Eastwood bonded over their shared adoration for the Top Gun star.
"I'll tell you one little thing: I have the same lawyer as Clint Eastwood, and he invited me to a dinner party," Crowe recalled. "He sat me next to Clint Eastwood, and I was so nervous. What do you say to Clint Eastwood? So I'm sitting there and Clint Eastwood leans over and says, 'Tom Cruise.' And I go: 'Oh, man, Tom Cruise. I love working with Tom Cruise.' And he goes, 'In a hundred years, they're gonna look back — that's the career, Tom Cruise's career.'"

Crowe then added his own prediction of Cruise: "That's the career to watch. When everything melts away and becomes simple statements of what happened in a time in history, you're going to read Tom Cruise's name."
In addition to Vanilla Sky and Jerry Maguire, Cruise also produced Crowe's 2005 film Elizabethtown and Crowe had an uncredited role as a bus passenger in the Cruise-starring Minority Report.
