<p>Glen Powell is fighting a dystopian nightmare — and evading death — in The Running Man.</p>
<p>The first trailer for the upcoming thriller, based on Stephen King's 1982 novel of the same name, shows Powell as protagonist Ben Richards, a man who participates in a game show where "runner" contestants must escape death from professional killers for a giant cash prize.</p>
<p>"In a near-future society, The Running Man is the top-rated show on television — a deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public and each day bringing a greater cash reward," an official synopsis reads.</p>
<p>"Desperate to save his sick daughter, working-class Ben Richards (Powell, 36) is convinced by the show's charming but ruthless producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the game as a last resort," it continues. "But Ben's defiance, instincts and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favorite — and a threat to the entire system."</p>

<p>"As ratings skyrocket, so does the danger, and Ben must outwit not just the Hunters, but a nation addicted to watching him fall," the synopsis concludes.</p>
<p>The movie is directed by Edgar Wright, from a script he co-wrote with Michael Bacall. The two have worked together in the past, including on 2010's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.</p>
<p>Aside from Powell and Brolin, 57, The Running Man also stars Colman Domingo, Jayme Lawson, Lee Pace, Katy O'Brian, William H. Macy, Emilia Jones and Scott Pilgrim star Michael Cera.</p>
<p>The original 1987 film was directed by Paul Michael Glaser and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, María Conchita Alonso, Yaphet Kotto, Jim Brown, Jesse Ventura and more.</p>

<p>While speaking with PEOPLE about his condiment line Smash Kitchen earlier this year, Powell shared how both he and director Wright, 50, connected with Schwarzenegger, 77, over FaceTime about Powell's role, since the Terminator actor led the original film.</p>
<p>"Arnold gave us his blessing," Powell said at the time. "[His son] Patrick Schwarzenegger is a great friend of mine and I asked Patrick if I could talk to Arnold, and I hadn't seen Arnold since we shot [The Expendables 3] in Bulgaria."</p>

<p>"Arnold gave us his full blessing and we get to give Arnold a very specific fun gift from the movie in a couple of weeks here," the Top Gun: Maverick actor added. "So I'm very excited to see him."</p>
