A 10th victim has died from the fire that ripped through a Massachusetts assisted-living facility earlier this week, officials said Thursday, as records and accounts from staff raise concerns about conditions at Gabriel House before the blaze.

Brenda Cropper, 66, died late Wednesday after being hospitalized in critical condition, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III announced. His office did not release any more information about Cropper or about the fire itself, which erupted Sunday evening and left some residents hanging out windows of the three-story facility screaming for help.

The cause remains under investigation, but the district attorney's office says it does not appear suspicious. Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon says the blaze started in a room on the second floor.

At least 30 people were hurt and nine people were initially reported dead, all over the age of 60, as thick smoke and flames trapped residents inside. The fire chief said Wednesday that a second person was also in critical condition.

Inspection reports released Thursday by the city's Bureau of Fire Investigation identified no problems at Gabriel House going back to 2019. The reports cover things like sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, exit doors and general housekeeping.

However, displaced residents and relatives have told of substandard conditions at the facility in Fall River, a blue-collar community of shuttered textile mills that's one of the poorest cities in Massachusetts.

The tragedy has called attention to the minimal regulations that govern assisted-living facilities. The facility's owner, Dennis Etzkorn, had repeatedly been cited by state regulators for tardiness in reporting potential health and safety incidents. He has declined to comment to The .

In documents released Wednesday, receipts from pest control companies as far back as 2015 showed Gabriel House being treated for bed bugs and other pests. A 2015 receipt described the dining room as "filthy" and that "food was undercooked."

Jenn Marley, who worked at the facility as a certified nursing assistant from 2018 to January 2020, said bedbugs, cockroaches and mice were a problem, and that some bathrooms were filthy even though residents were supposed to get help with cleaning. Management kept track of residents who asked for more toilet paper, she said in an interview.

"God forbid if they ran out of toilet paper, the boss would complain that we had to give them a roll," she said.

Marley said she sometimes made large batches of chili at home and brought it to residents because she worried they weren't getting enough to eat. Portions served at Gabriel House were noticeably small, she said.

"Hot dogs and a teaspoon of beans. I'm sorry, my cat eats more than that," said Marley, who described a cook yelling at a resident who asked for more.

"You expect better conditions," she said. "It's sad."

Those who died have been identified as Joseph Wilansky, 77, Rui Albernaz, 64, Ronald Codega, 61, Margaret Duddy, 69, Robert King, 78, Kim Mackin, 71, Richard Rochon, 78, and Eleanor Willett, 86. The identity of a 70-year-old woman has not been released.

Union officials say the city didn't staff enough firefighters to rescue all the residents trapped in the blaze. It's a contention that city officials have since sought to resolve by promising to add more firefighters to each shift, initially via overtime and eventually by hiring new staff.

Fox Sports teams up with Barstool Sports, including appearances on 'Big Noon Kickoff'

Fox Sports is joining forces with Barstool Sports.

Barstool Sports' programming will appear on Fox Sports 1 while founder Dave Portnoy will appear on Fox Sports "Big Noon Kickoff" college football show. The partnership was announced Thursday afternoon.

"(Barstool owner and founder) Dave (Portnoy) has built a one-of-a-kind brand that connects with a new generation of sports fans — authentic, bold, and original. Their unique voice and loyal fanbase makes them a natural fit for our evolving multiplatform content strategy," Fox Sports CEO and executive producer Eric Shanks said in a statement.

Portnoy graduated from Michigan, which could lead to some interesting interactions with former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer.

"Nobody has been there to defend the Kings of the Conference. That ends today," Portnoy said in a video posted to Twitter/X.

"Big Noon Kickoff" will begin the season in Columbus, Ohio, on Aug. 29 when defending national champion Ohio State hosts Texas. The show also features host Rob Stone and analysts Brady Quinn, Matt Leinart, Mark Ingram and Chris "The Bear" Fallica.

The "Barstool College Football Show" — which will air on Saturday's from 9-9:45 a.m. — will also be streamed across Fox's digital platforms, including Tubi.

Other Barstool personalities will also make appearances on "Big Noon Kickoff," including Dan "Big Cat" Katz. Barstool will also contribute to Fox's college basketball coverage and possibly horse racing.

Barstool will have a live two-hour weekday morning show on FS1 with the launch date to be announced later.

FS1 has a need for studio programming after cancelling three shows earlier this week.

"In our two-decade history, we've never had the chance to work with so much talent and resources. We can't wait to collab and bring our voice to FOX Sports' airwaves," Portnoy said in a statement.

Barstool's addition gives Fox Sports what it hopes will be its answer to Pat McAfee as well as possible inroads with the age 18-34 demographic.

Barstool previously had a relationship with ESPN, but its program was canceled after one episode in 2017 after the network received criticism both inside and outside the company.

Portnoy founded Barstool in 2004 but Penn Gaming acquired majority stake in 2023 after being an investor since 2020. Portnoy bought Barstool back later that year for $1 after Penn Gaming rebranded Barstool Sportsbook as ESPN Bet.

A teacher in New Jersey let a lottery ticket gift sit in their car for weeks before learning it was a $500,000 winner

The educator received the scratch card from a parent during the end of the school year

A $10 card turned out to have a $500,000 top prize, which the teacher said in a press release was a "life-changing" moment

A teacher is celebrating a big win after receiving a gift from a parent.

On Wednesday, July 16, the New Jersey Lottery revealed the latest winner of their $500,000-top-prize ticket in a press release, stating that the teacher who hit it big received gifts from parents during the end of the public school year in June that included multiple lottery scratch cards.

The tickets remained in the educator's car for a couple of weeks. As they explained in the press release, "I had a stack of cards as gifts, and I had forgotten I left them there."

"One morning, I went out to the car and thought that I'd see if I won any gas money," the teacher continued, of the moment before finding out they'd won.

The teacher then played two tickets before holding a $10 card, called "The Shore Thing," which turned out to have a $500,000 top prize.

"It probably wasn't smart of me [to leave the tickets in the car]." the winner said. "I've been driving around with my puppy. He could've eaten them."

"I get them as gifts, but I never imagined. For me, this is life-changing," the winner said.

According to the New Jersey Lottery, "30 cents of every dollar in Lottery sales is contributed to the State pension system, which helps support teachers, along with police, firefighters and other public workers. Since fiscal year 2018, the Lottery has contributed more than $8 billion to pensions."

Meanwhile, a North Carolina man won a $1 million prize earlier this month after buying a $10 ticket at a local Wink Mart gas station.

Per a news release by NC Lottery, Ricky Nunnery Jr. from Sanford became the first winner of the $1 million top prize in the state's new lottery game.

Nunnery revealed he had a dream "that I would hit big on the lottery." He then went out to buy a $10 ticket at the gas station, as "Something just told me to play."

He decided to receive the $1 million in a split — with an initial lump sum of $600,000 and an annual prize of $50,000 over 20 years. After state and federal taxes, he went home with $430,503.

"I'm tickled to death with this," Nunnery said, revealing that he plans to invest and pay his bills.

Caitlin Clark to miss WNBA All-Star Game and 3-point contest because of groin injury

-

 • Caitlin Clark to miss WNBA All-Star Game and 3-point contest because of groin injury

Cydney Henderson and Scooby Axson, USA TODAY July 17, 2025 at 7:21 PM

The Indiana Fever announced Caitlin Clark will not participate in the WNBA All-Star Game or the 3-point competition after injuring her right groin in the Fever's win over the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday.

The 2025 WNBA All-Star game will be held in Indianapolis for the first time in league history, with Clark, Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell selected to represent the Indiana Fever, tying the Seattle Storm for the most All-Star representatives this year. The untimely injury, however, has thrown a wrench into things.

"I am incredibly sad and disappointed to say I can't participate in the 3-Point contest or the All-Star Game. I have to rest my body." Clark said. "I will still be at Gainbridge Fieldhouse for all the action and I'm looking forward to helping Sandy (Liberty coach Brondello) coach our team to a win."

Fever head coach Stephanie White said "Caitlin and her team" ultimately made the decision to prioritize her long-term health after missing 11 total games with various injuries, including a left groin injury and left quad strain.

Clark was set to be the centerpiece of the All-Star weekend in Indianapolis. She was named a captain after receiving the most fan votes and drafted teammates Boston (starter) and Mitchell (reserve) to her team. Clark said they planned on making this "the best All-Star that the WNBA has ever had," but she will now be cheering on her team from the sidelines as they face Team Naphessa Collier.

"It's a big deal for us to have All-Star in Indianapolis, of course with Caitlin being a focal point of all that," White said on Thursday. "As the coach of the Indiana Fever, it's not a bigger deal than our long-term season."

What happened?

Clark appeared to injure her groin in the final minute of the Fever's 85-77 win over the Sun on Tuesday in Boston. After a bounce pass to Kelsey Mitchell for a layup with 39.1 seconds remaining, Clark held the inside of her right thigh before walking over and banging her head against the stanchion in apparent frustration. Clark walked to the Fever bench, where she put a towel over her head.

White confirmed Clark "felt a little something in her groin." She was subsequently ruled out of the Fever's road matchup against the New York Liberty on Wednesday.

"The most important thing for us is to keep her upbeat, continue to support her and let her know we got her back and let her know we're going to go battle for her," White said on. "Being injured and continuing to have setbacks is frustrating. Mentally, emotionally."

Who will replace Caitlin Clark?

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert selected replacements for Clark and Mercury star Satou Sabally (ankle) on Thursday. Washington Mystics guard Brittney Sykes and Atlanta Dream forward Brionna Jones were added to the Team Clark roster.

Engelbert the Lynx's Kayla McBride was added as a replacement for the Dream's Rhyne Howard (knee injury) Wednesday.

The recall impacts more than 67,000 cases of roll-on deodorants that were sold nationally, a notice posted by the agency shows. Chargers place RB Najee Harris on the NFI list following fireworks incident

-

 • Chargers place RB Najee Harris on the NFI list following fireworks incident

Nick Brinkerhoff, USA TODAY July 17, 2025 at 7:58 PM

Najee Harris is beginning his time in Los Angeles on the sidelines.

The Los Angeles Chargers officially placed the running back on the active/non-football injury (NFI) list on July 17 after a fireworks incident left Harris with a superficial eye injury during the early morning hours on July 5.

It's not expected that Harris will be on the list for long, according to Chargers general manager, Joe Hortiz.

"Nothing is set in stone," Hortiz told reporters Wednesday.

Hortiz added that Harris remains in good spirits and noted that the information relayed to the team has been positive.

"We haven't seen him yet, our doctors haven't seen him yet," Hortiz said Wednesday. "He's finishing up his doctors appointments, he'll report today. We'll get our eyes on him.

"Surface-level injury, obviously around the eye, so I'm sure there's bruising and all that. But we haven't seen him," Hortiz continued. "We'll get more clarity when he gets here and our doctors see him, but we're in communication with the doctors there."

Harris was continuing to see doctors at Stanford Hospital – where he received treatment following the incident. Hortiz said that the Chargers director of player health and performance, Marco Zucconi, has been in contract with the running back and his doctors.

Doug Hendrickson, Harris' agent, revealed the injury on July 10 in a statement, putting internet rumors to rest.

"Najee Harris was present at a 4th of July event where a fireworks mishap resulted in injuries to several attendees," Hendrickson said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports. "Najee sustained a superficial eye injury during the incident, but is fully expected to be ready for the upcoming NFL season."

Once cleared by the team, Harris can come off the NFI list and begin practice.

Veterans were schedule to report to Chargers training camp on July 16. The team received an earlier start date thanks to their participation in the preseason's annual Hall of Fame game, which is slated for July 31.

The former Pittsburgh Steelers running back signed with the Chargers in free agency inking a one-year, $5.25 million deal. There is also $4 million in incentive bonuses tied to the contract, bringing the total value to $9.25 million.

What is the non-football injury (NFI) list?

The list is designed for players that have suffered injuries outside of football, or are dealing with a long-term illness. If Harris remains on the list at the end of training camp, he would have to miss the first four games of the regular season.
