Grand Canyon North Rim closed amid raging wildfires

 • Grand Canyon North Rim closed amid raging wildfires

Christopher Cann, USA TODAY July 14, 2025 at 9:24 PM

Firefighters in Arizona were trying to contain a pair of fast-moving wildfires that destroyed a historic lodge in Grand Canyon National Park, closed a section of the park for the rest of the season and prompted calls for an investigation into federal authorities' wildfire response.

The two wildfires burning at or near the park's North Rim include the White Sage Fire and the Dragon Bravo Fire. The blazes have consumed about 45,000 acres of land as of July 14, an area about the size of Washington, D.C.

Park officials said the Dragon Bravo Fire, which has burned 5,000 acres within the park, destroyed dozens of structures, including the Grand Canyon Lodge, the only hotel inside the national park at the North Rim.

About 35 miles north, the White Sage Fire has torched about 62 square miles of land and triggered evacuations across communities near the Utah border and the Grand Canyon's North Rim. Lightning strikes ignited both fires, and a combination of strong winds, low humidity and high daily temperatures fueled their rapid expansion, officials said.

Here's what we know about the wildfires.

Grand Canyon North Rim under 'extreme heat warning'

The National Weather Service issued an "extreme heat warning" for the Grand Canyon Village and the park's North Rim on July 14.

Such warnings are reserved for the hottest days of the year and are issued only when "extremely dangerous heat conditions are expected or ongoing," according to the weather service. Daytime temperatures in the area could reach 106 to 115 degrees.

The scorching heat has hampered firefighters' ability to battle the blaze on the ground in the daytime, officials said.

White Sage Fire triggers evacuations, closures near Arizona

North of the Grand Canyon, the White Sage Fire was first reported July 9 and has grown steadily, leading to evacuation orders over a vast area, from the Kaibab Plateau to the Utah-Arizona line and the North Rim.

As of July 14, the wildfire had destroyed 40,186 acres of land and remains 0% contained, according to InciWeb, a federal government wildfire tracker. No injuries or damaged structures have been reported.

Fire officials said they made progress over the weekend. Containment lines near the White Sage community held as firefighters suppressed growth on the fire's southern edge, according to InciWeb.

To the north, however, "the fire is experiencing rapid growth," particularly in the footprint of a 2020 wildfire that temporarily closed the North Rim, officials said.

"Hot, dry, and windy conditions continue to challenge firefighting efforts," InciWeb said.

Dragon Bravo Fire: How it started and ravaged North Rim

The Dragon Bravo Fire was ignited by a lightning strike July 4. Initially, fire officials sought to manage the blaze by setting up containment lines and halting its growth.

But over the weekend, powerful wind gusts up to 40 mph led the fire to expand 500 acres overnight, swallowing dozens of structures, including historic cabins. It also threatened a water treatment facility, leading officials to evacuate some firefighting personnel and halt aerial operations because of a possible chlorine leak.

No injuries or deaths were reported as staff and hikers were evacuated from the North Rim area before the blaze exploded in size.

Park officials said the North Rim will remain closed for the rest of the season, which runs from May 15 to Oct. 15. Visitors to the more popular South Rim, which is open all year, were advised to stay on possible air quality alerts.

"The fire is being managed with an aggressive full suppression strategy," the National Park Service said. "Fire behavior is still very active."

Grand Canyon Lodge destroyed in wildfire

The Grand Canyon Lodge sat perched on the canyon's edge and offered guests panoramic views of the natural wonder.

The lodge opened in 1937 after the original building burned to the ground in a wildfire in September 1932. The new property was made up of the main lodge building, 23 deluxe cabins and more than 90 regular cabins, the park service said.

The lodge building was made of a limestone facade that was sourced nearby, and massive ponderosa pine trees were turned into support beams for a sloped roof capable of withstanding heavy loads of snow.

"We are devastated by the loss of Grand Canyon Lodge and historic buildings on the North Rim," read a statement from the National Park Service.

Rep. Greg Stanton, D-Arizona, said on social media that the lodge's destruction was "heartbreaking news for Arizona & everyone who loves this special place."

Arizona governor calls for investigation of federal wildfire response

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs questioned the federal government's handling of the Dragon Bravo Fire, which destroyed numerous structures on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, including the historic Grand Canyon Lodge.

Hobbs, a Democrat, said in a post on X that after a lightning strike started the fire, the federal government "chose to manage that fire as a controlled burn during the driest, hottest part of the Arizona summer."

"I am calling on the federal government for a comprehensive and independent investigation into the management of the Fire and a report detailing the decisions that led to this devastating outcome," she wrote.

"As someone who was born and raised in Arizona, I know what the Grand Canyon National Park means to so many people, not just in Arizona, but all over the world, and how devastating it is to see this damage done to one of Arizona's most cherished landmarks."

Kremlin says weapons and ammunition deliveries to Ukraine from U.S. are continuing

 • Kremlin says weapons and ammunition deliveries to Ukraine from U.S. are continuing

July 14, 2025 at 11:28 AM

MOSCOW (Reuters) -The Kremlin said on Monday that the big picture of U.S. President Donald Trump remarks about supplying Patriot air defence missiles to Ukraine was that U.S. arms and ammunition deliveries to Kyiv have continued and are still continuing.

Trump did not say how many Patriots he plans to send to Ukraine, but he said the United States would be reimbursed for their cost by the European Union.

"Now it seems that these supplies will be paid for by Europe, some will be paid for, some will not," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters when asked about Trump's words.

"The fact remains that the supply of weapons, ammunition, and military equipment from the United States continued and continues to Ukraine."

Trump is expected to announce a new plan to arm Ukraine with offensive weapons in a sharp departure from his earlier stance, Axios reported on Sunday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

Peskov said that Kyiv was obviously in no hurry on the third round of peace talks, adding that Russia was ready for them and awaiting clarity on the timing from Ukraine.

Former Israeli leader says planned 'humanitarian city' in Gaza would be a 'concentration camp'

A planned "humanitarian city" inside Gaza intended to hold hundreds of thousands of Palestinians would be a "concentration camp," former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has warned.

Defense Minister Israel Katz said last week he had told the military to advance plans for the zone, which would eventually contain the entire population of Gaza. The area would be built on the ruins of the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, and once Palestinians enter the zone, they would not be allowed to leave. Katz also vowed to implement a plan for the emigration of Palestinians from Gaza.

"It is a concentration camp. I am sorry," Olmert told The Guardian newspaper on Sunday. "If they (Palestinians) will be deported into the new 'humanitarian city', then you can say that this is part of an ethnic cleansing."

In response to Olmert's comments, the Prime Minister's Office called him a "convicted felon disgracing Israel on CNN." In a statement, the office said: "We evacuate civilians. Hamas blocks them. He calls that a war crime?" Olmert was freed from prison in 2017 after serving 16 months on corruption charges.

Olmert has previously blasted the conduct of the Israeli military in Gaza and the country's political leadership. In May, he said he could no longer defend Israel against accusations of war crimes. "What is it if not a war crime?" he asked rhetorically in an interview with CNN. He said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and far-right members of his government are "committing actions which can't be interpreted any other way."

More than 58,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The latest comments from Olmert, who served as Israel's prime minister from 2006-2009, go much further in criticizing the country's intentions in Gaza, however, especially since comparisons to Nazi concentration camps in Israel is considered virtually unthinkable. But Olmert said it was the "inevitable interpretation" of the plans.

People make their way past the rubble of houses in Rafah, Gaza, in January 2025, a day after a now-defunct ceasefire deal in the war between Israel and Hamas came into effect. - AFP/Getty Images

"When they build a camp where they (plan to) 'clean' more than half of Gaza, then the inevitable understanding of the strategy of this (is that) it is not to save (Palestinians). It is to deport them, to push them and to throw them away," Olmert told the Guardian.

Katz's plans for what he dubbed the "humanitarian city" were discussed at a meeting with Netanyahu on Sunday evening, according to a source familiar with the matter. But after Israeli news outlets reported that it would take months to build the zone and billions of dollars, the source said Netanyahu asked to make its establishment shorter and less expensive.

Yair Lapid, the head of Israel's opposition, blasted the plans as an attempt by Netanyahu to let his far-right government partners "run wild with extreme fantasies just to preserve his coalition." In a statement on social media, Lapid called to "end the war and bring back the hostages."

Michael Sfard, an Israeli human rights lawyer, told CNN last week that Katz's plan amounts to the forcible transfer of a population in preparation for deportation. Both of these are war crimes, Sfard said.

"If they are done on a massive scale – whole communities – they can amount to crimes against humanity," Sfard added, dismissing the notion that any departure from Gaza could be considered voluntary.

British Open: Will Rory McIlroy ever be comfortable being a living legend?

Main Image

-

 • British Open: Will Rory McIlroy ever be comfortable being a living legend?

Jay HartJuly 14, 2025 at 11:09 PM

In the lineage of golf courses, Royal Portrush isn't in the same stratosphere as St. Andrews or Augusta National or Pebble Beach. But to Rory McIlroy, it's special.

McIlroy grew up just outside of Belfast, Northern Ireland, an hour south of Royal Portrush, which in 1951 became the first (and still only) course in all of Ireland to host The Open, which Europeans consider the grandest golf tournament in all the world. McIlroy played there as a kid, even set the course record — a stout 61 which he shot at the ripe old age of 16.

By the time Portrush got its next turn to host The Open in 2019, McIlroy was a 30-year-old golfing legend — a four-time major winner who the locals pinned all their hopes on to hoist the Claret Jug for all of Ireland. Instead, McIlroy fell flat on his face, missing the cut — not even making it to the weekend.

This week, The Open returns to Royal Portrush, and though it's been six years, some things for Rory McIlroy remain the same.

"I just think that that feeling, the walk to the first tee and then that ovation, I was still a little surprised and a little taken aback, like geez, these people really want me to win," McIlroy recalled Monday. "I think that brought its own sort of pressure and more internally from myself and not really wanting to let people down. I guess it's just something I didn't mentally prepare for that day or that week. But I learned pretty quickly that one of my challenges, especially in a week like this, is controlling myself and controlling that battle."

Controlling the internal battle — it's been the struggle of Rory McIlroy for more than a decade.

It all came so easy at first, at least it looked that way, winning four majors by the age of 25. But then, of course, came the troubles — the 10 years of close calls and flameouts and victories everywhere around the world except for at the four majors. He always had the talent to win anytime, anywhere, but the mental part ... that was the struggle.

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland signs autographs after a practice round at Royal Portrush Golf Club. (Ramsey Cardy/Sportsfile via Getty Images) (Ramsey Cardy via Getty Images)

When he finally got major No. 5, the Masters win in April that ended his decade-plus quest to complete the career grand slam and ripped the monkey off his back, well, the mental challenges — the pressure he'd put on himself and the pressure that had come from everywhere — was gone ... except that it wasn't. He'd flame out at both majors since, chirp at the media (when he did talk), toss his clubs and appear generally disgruntled despite seemingly having it all.

"Is it?" he said Monday when a reporter asked if the pressure is off him now that he has the green jacket in his closet. "Is the pressure off?"

It's pretty apparent it's not and it's not going to be, maybe not ever for Rory McIlroy. The goalposts will forever move — new challenges presented and expectations leveled, both from within and without. This week it's to win in his home country, and in a couple months at the Ryder Cup it will be to win for his home continent. And then next year at Augusta, to win it again, rinse and repeat.

This is the first-world problem he's signed up for by becoming one of the best golfer's the planet has ever produced. The question, as it has been for the last decade and will be for the next however many years he continues to play at an elite level, won't be if his game is where it should be, but if his head is.

"I think in '19 I probably tried to isolate, and I think it's better for everyone if I embrace it," he said Monday, in a moment of introspection. "I think it's better for me because I can — it's nice to be able to accept adulation, even though I struggle with it at times."

Yes, the struggle is real, even for a living legend like Rory McIlroy. It's just all of Ireland that is hoping he can handle it this weekend.
