Elizabeth Taylor enjoyed reveling in luxury during her many travels around the world

The beloved star's final trip with executive assistant Tim Mendelson was in spring 2010, less than a year before her death

Mendelson tells PEOPLE how Taylor's most important rule of travel left a lasting memory

Traveling with Elizabeth Taylor was an experience to remember.

Tim Mendelson, cotrustee of Taylor's estate and executive assistant for her last two decades of life, recalls the actress continuing to travel despite struggles with her health that came later in life.

The last trip Mendelson accompanied the actress on was a trip to London in spring of 2010.

"There was an event at Buckingham Palace. Then-Prince Charles was involved with the Royal Welsh Academy of Music and Drama and they were building a theater and naming it the Richard Burton Theatre," he recalls to PEOPLE.

The trip to London was scheduled to be about a month long but featured a snag at the beginning because of travel interruptions that resulted from the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland.

"We couldn't take off. She begged the pilot to take off a day earlier than he was comfortable with. She said, 'We need to get there a couple days before,' and she convinced him to leave," Mendelson says.

Aside from their scheduled events in London, "at least every other day she planned some kind of a special thing. We went on the London Eye. We went down Thames on a boat, such a beautiful ride," he recalls.

Elizabeth Taylor in 2006

"We went to this Michelin-star restaurant and drove all the way to the English countryside. She planned a traditional Christmas dinner. We were in a suite at The Dorchester, which had a dining room and a chef. She asked him to prepare a traditional English Christmas dinner, as we hadn't had one before. And it was so good," he continues.

Taylor was never interested in letting her health hold her back from traveling.

"The very last thing we were going to do, which was so unrealistic, was go to New York for an AIDS event. And she called me and said, 'I can't go.' She was really dedicated to AIDS. She had a great imagination, she loved life so much, and she was never going to let anything hold her back from doing the things that she wanted to do and having things to look forward to," Mendelson shares.

Her travel adventures, and those who got to share them with her, are part of what make up the legend of Elizabeth Taylor that continues to mesmerize fans to this day.

"She was a very giving person. She was a diva. She loved the best — it was all luxury with her. But she experienced things in a way money can't buy," Mendelson says.

Public asked to help after deputies lose assault rifle. It may have fallen out of squad car

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is investigating how an assault rifle went missing from — and potentially fell out of — the trunk of a squad car in South L.A.

Deputies first noticed the Colt M4 assault rifle was missing from the trunk of their squad car on Saturday night sometime between 10:30 and 11, according to a statement issued by the Sheriff's Department.

The weapon had been kept in "a black, hard-shelled storage case" in the vehicle's trunk, along with five magazines, each loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.

The Sheriff's Department asked the public to help find the assault rifle and identified the route that the deputies traveled Saturday night in hopes of locating the weapon.

The deputies traveled about four miles, heading north on Normandie Avenue near the department's South L.A. Station before turning west on Imperial Highway, north on Hawthorne Boulevard, then west on 104th Street to Inglewood Avenue.

"Upon realizing the rifle was missing, personnel from the South Los Angeles Station immediately initiated a search of the station parking lot and retraced the deputies' route of travel," the Sheriff's Department said in the statement. "Surveillance footage from the area is currently being reviewed, and local law enforcement agencies have been notified of the incident."

The department also said it was initiating an investigation to determine "whether processes and procedures were followed." The union representing L.A. County sheriff's deputies did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Anyone with information about the missing rifle or with video along the deputies' route is asked to contact the Sheriff's South L.A. station at (323) 820-6700.

Search ends for those missing after Yemen's Houthi rebels sink ship in Red Sea

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The search for those missing after Yemen's Houthi rebels sank a ship in the Red Sea has ended as at least four people are presumed dead and 11 others remain unaccounted for, the private security firms involved said Monday.

The announcement came as satellite photos show long, trailing oil slicks from where the bulk carrier Eternity C sank, as well as another where the sinking of the bulk carrier Magic Seas by the Iranian-backed Houthis took place.

Both ships were attacked over a week ago by the rebels as part of their campaign targeting vessels over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip that's upended shipping in the Red Sea, through which $1 trillion of goods usually passes a year.

Search called off as mariners missing

The private security firms Ambrey and Diaplous Group ran the search for those missing from the Eternity C, which had a three-man security team aboard but requested no escort from either the U.S. Navy or a European Union force in the region. The ship came under attack July 7 and faced hours of Houthi assaults by small arms and bomb-carrying drones before ultimately sinking in the Red Sea.

The initial attack on the Eternity C came a day after the attack on the Magic Seas. Both ships were Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned vessels.

Ten people were recovered alive from the attack, including eight Filipino crew members and a Greek and Indian from the vessel's security team, the EU's Operation Aspides said. At least four are presumed to have been killed in the attack, leaving 11 others missing, the EU mission has said.

The Houthis claimed to have taken some mariners after the attack, but have offered no evidence of that. The U.S. Embassy in Yemen said it believed the rebels had "kidnapped" some of the crew.

"The decision to end the search has been taken by the vessel's Owner reluctantly but it believes that, in all the circumstances, the priority must now be to get the 10 souls safely recovered alive ashore and to provide them with the urgent medical support they need at this difficult time," a statement by the security firms said. "The thoughts of all those involved in the rescue operation are with the families of those who remain missing."

Oil slicks seen after two vessels sank

The attacks on the vessels also raised concerns about damage to the environment in the Red Sea, home to corals and wildlife that draws divers, tourists and scientists. Satellite photos from Planet Labs PBC analyzed Monday by The show large, spreading oil slicks in the southern Red Sea where the vessels sank.

Wim Zwijnenburg, an analyst with the Dutch peace organization PAX, estimated the length of the slick from the Eternity C at some 80 kilometers (50 miles) and from the Magic Seas at some 65 kilometers (40 miles). He warned it could threatened wildlife reserves in nearby Eritrea in Africa and elsewhere.

The oil comes from the ship's tanks and had been used for their own propulsion. Other shipping disasters have seen much of the slicks evaporate on their own, though they cause damage to the environment, too.

Houthis have attacked shipping since 2023

From November 2023 to December 2024, the Houthis targeted more than 100 ships with missiles and drones. In their campaign so far, the Houthis have sank four vessels and killed at least eight mariners.

The Houthis stopped their attacks during a brief ceasefire in the war. They later became the target of an intense weekslong campaign of airstrikes ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump before he declared a ceasefire had been reached with the rebels.

The Houthis' new attacks come as a new possible ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war remains in the balance. Meanwhile, the future of talks between the U.S. and Iran over Tehran's battered nuclear program is in question after Israel launched a 12-day war against the Islamic Republic that saw the Americans bomb three Iranian atomic sites.

BERLIN (AP) — Arachnophobes beware: Customs officials on Monday released photos from a seizure of roughly 1,500 young tarantulas found inside plastic containers that had been hidden in chocolate spongecake boxes shipped to an airport in western Germany.

Customs officials found the shipment at Cologne Bonn airport in a package that had arrived from Vietnam, tipped off by a "noticeable smell" that didn't resemble the expected aroma of the 7 kilograms (about 15 pounds) of the confectionery treats, Cologne customs office spokesman Jens Ahland said.

"My colleagues at the airport are regularly surprised by the contents of prohibited packages from all over the world, but the fact that they found around 1,500 small plastic containers containing young tarantulas in this package left even the most experienced among them speechless," Ahland said in a statement.

Ahland hailed an "extraordinary seizure," but one that "saddens us to see what some people do to animals purely for profit."

Many of the eight-legged creatures didn't survive the trip, in a suspected violation of German animal-welfare rules, while survivors were given to the care of an expert handler, the office said. Reached by phone, Ahland said that the estimated value of the shipment was being assessed.

Criminal proceedings are underway against the intended recipient in the Sauerland region, east of the airport, in part for alleged violations of failure to pay the proper import duties and make the proper customs declarations, the office said.

The tarantulas were discovered about three weeks ago, but the customs office only made the images public on Monday.

Saman Shafiq, USA TODAYJuly 14, 2025 at 9:01 PM

The live-action remake of the beloved animated tale of a boy and a flying beast will soon be available to watch on your TV screens with the digital release of "How to Train Your Dragon."

Set on the rugged isle of Berk, "where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations," the movie is based on the 2010 animated adventure of the same name.

The film follows Hiccup (Mason Thames), the inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler), who "defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury Dragon." The two forge an unlikely bond which "reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society," the film's synopsis says.

"As an ancient threat emerges, endangering both Vikings and dragons, Hiccup's friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future," it adds. "Together, they must navigate the delicate path toward peace, soaring beyond the boundaries of their worlds and redefining what it means to be a hero and a leader."

Astrid (Nico Parker) and Hiccup (Mason Thames) ride high with their Night Fury friend Toothless in the live-action "How to Train Your Dragon."'A lesson for anybody tackling a remake'

USA TODAY's Brian Truitt gave the film ★★★½ out of four, writing "the new 'How to Train Your Dragon' manages to be a rousing success" on "all counts."

"'How to Train Your Dragon' is a lesson for anybody tackling a remake," Truitt wrote in his review. "It doesn't try to half do something old and something new, like 'Snow White,' and makes the case for being actually necessary, unlike 'Lilo & Stitch'."

"As it was back in the day, Toothless is a joy to watch and the movie's best special effect but he's also a symbol of growth: as watchable and lovable as ever, yet with a slightly more mature sheen," the review adds.
