So embarking on a mini stand-up comedy career for his new movie"Is This Thing On?"and running into audiences unfamiliar with his work was a humbling experience. "I was hoping that they were people from out of the country, just for my own ego," he says with a laugh.
Director Bradley Cooper's new film (in select theaters Dec. 19, nationwide Jan. 9) casts Arnett as Alex Novak, a middle-aged dad on the cusp of a divorce from his wife, Tess (Laura Dern). He winds up on stage during a comedy club's open mic night, where he spills his feelings about his relationship. It ends up becoming a healthy catharsis for him while also complicating his marriage.

Although he's had plenty of comedy roles, from "Arrested Development" to "30 Rock," Arnett confesses he came to stand-up "totally late." Growing up in comedy-rich Toronto, he didn't do any stand-up or sketch performances; Arnett moved to New York City at 20 "with the intent of doing more dramatic and serious stuff." He became interested in stand-up a couple of years ago: Arnett had the idea for the movie, inspired by the life of British pharmaceutical rep-turned-comedian John Bishop, and co-wrote the script with his buddy Cooper and Mark Chappell.
Arnett realized "how daunting and scary" live comedy is and experienced "that thing in my stomach" from nerves once he started doing it. "I don't know if you ever lose that."
He would take the stage in character, introducing himself as Alex Novak, and work out the material that ended up in the movie. Arnett has been a performer for a long time but stand-up made him feel "a new kind of terrified," he admits. "The audience is like, 'Great, make me laugh.' That's it. There's nowhere to hide.
"I have some connection to performing and entertainment, of course. Alex Novak has no connection to this world at all. He gets up because he didn't want to pay a cover charge ... and ends up telling his truth. So I had to try to put myself in the mindset of this guy."

Arnett performed to a mix of audience members who knew him and others who didn't. "I'd get up there and they'd say, 'Please welcome to the stage for the first time, Alex Novak!' Some people who were maybe comedy fans would be kind of excited, like, 'Oh, this is going to be ... What's going on? What name did they just say?' And then I'd say, 'Hey, I'm Alex Novak,' and you could see people sort of laugh like, 'Is he losing his mind?' It depended on the stage."
The actor tried out his film material at different clubs throughout New York City. Yes, there were some nights where he bombed, but Arnett recalls one "rewarding moment" on a New Joke Monday at the Fat Black Pussycat where the crowd included couples from Germany and Israel, plus a few folks from France and Portugal, but very few Americans.
"I'm thinking like, 'Oh, boy, how's this going to go tonight?' " he says. "They're going to be like, 'Why is this depressed man coming on stage talking about his life?' So I go up and I do my set. Afterward, we're hanging out and this woman comes up to me and she goes, 'I think it's really sweet that you miss your wife. Did you tell her? Does she know?'
"I was like, 'Oh, wow, this might work!' "
