15-year-old fatally shot while robbing home, Atlanta police say

A 15-year-old was fatallyshotduring an attempted home robbery inAtlanta, police say.

Officers responded to a home in South Atlanta around 5 p.m. on Dec. 16 toreports of gunshots, according to a news release from the Atlanta Police Department.

Speaking in a video on Dec. 16, a lieutenant for the departmentdid not identifythe teen.

Teen found dead in Atlanta

When officers arrived at the scene, a 15-year-old male was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound, and was pronounced dead by emergency personnel. The teen had a firearm in his possession.

At the same time the gunshots were reported, another call came in to police for a robbery at the same location, police said.

The homeowner, an adult man who was not identified, told police he had been the victim of a robbery and had shot the teen in self defense.

No charges filed

The man was taken into custody but has not been charged with a crime. Police say the investigation is ongoing, but the evidence suggests the teen was attempting to rob the home when he was shot.

Police did not release how many times the 15-year-old had been shot.

The teen is believed to be a resident of the area, police said.

Teen robbery shootings

The shooting comes just a few days aftertwo teens were shot by a homeownerin the Adamsville neighborhood of Atlanta while trying to steal packages from the front porch, USA Today reported. The two teenagers were both treated for serious, but not life-threatening injuries, while the homeowner was charged with aggravated assault.
