Cowboys stun Eagles with rally from 21-0 hole as Philadelphia's offense goes quiet again

For three possessions Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles appeared to answer all of the questions swirling around their stagnant offense.

Those concerns, however, roared back to life for the rest of the game. After scoring three touchdowns in three possessions against the Dallas Cowboys, the Philadelphia attack fizzled for the better part of three quarters.

The result was a 24-21 Cowboys win as Dallas rallied to stun the first-place Eagles. The 21-point rally for a win tied a record forthe largest comeback in franchise history.

Cowboys convert after Eagles fail

An improved Dallas defense held Philadelphia off the scoreboard for the final 11:32 of the first half and throughout the second. After coming up with a goal-line stand with 1:44 in a 21-21 game, the Eagles had one last chance to put up more points.

Instead, they gained 17 yards on five plays. A sack of Jalen Hurts by Osa Odighizuwa on third-and-2 prompted a punt back to the Cowboys with 1:44 remaining. The Cowboys did not squander their next opportunity.

Dak Prescott and the Cowboys celebrate his game-tying touchdown run late in the game.

Dak Prescott found George Pickens for a 24-yard gain with 44 seconds remaining that set up Brandon Aubrey for a game-winning field-goal attempt as time expired. Aubrey was pure from 42 yards, and the Cowboys completed the stunner with 24 unanswered points to secure the comeback win.

For the Cowboys, it was a win that improved them to 5-5-1 to keep their slim playoff hopes afloat. For the Eagles, the loss dropped them to 8-3 to cede control of the path to the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs to the 8-2 Los Angeles Rams ahead of their Sunday night matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And despite an explosive start on the scoreboard, it raised further questions about a troubled offense's ability to compete for a Super Bowl championship.

What is wrong with Philadelphia's offense?

All looked right for the Eagles in the start of the ballgame. They opened with a 50-yard drive that ended with a 16-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Brown, their All-Pro receiver whose lack of touches have been at the heart of their offensive struggles.

Their second drive covered 76 yards and ended with a 7-yard touchdown run by Hurts. And their third featured a 41-yard deep ball from Hurts to DeVonta Smith that set up another touchdown for a 21-0 lead.

It was the type of big-play production that's been sorely lacking in Philadelphia's response to last season's Super Bowl run and appeared to have the Eagles on track for a big win over a bitter rival.

But that was it for the Eagles' offense. Their remaining possessions ended thusly:

Three of those punts concluded three-and-out possessions. The Eagles gained 18 yards or fewer on six of their remaining eight possessions and didn't gain more than 33 yards on a possession for the rest of the game.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia's run game never gained traction.

A Dallas run defense bolstered by the addition of Kenny Clark in the Micah Parsons trade and trade-deadline acquisition of All-Pro Quinnen Williams stifled an Eagles rushing attack featuring the reigning Offensive Player of the Year. Saquon Barkley managed just 22 yards on 10 carries. He lost a fumble late in the game. And the Eagles limped to 63 total rushing yards on 3.5 yards per carry.

Hurts finished the day completing 27 of 39 passes for 289 yards and a touchdown. He threw for 163 of those yards in the first half. Brown finished with 8 catches for 110 yards after tallying five for 67 in the first half.

Dallas capitalizes with its own offensive explosion

While the Eagles went stagnant, the Cowboys' big-play offense opened up. Dallas got on the board with a 72-yard touchdown drive just before halftime.

Its second scoring drive was set up by a spectacular throw-and catch from Prescott to CeeDee Lamb, who corralled the 48-yard gain despite being interfered with. It was an otherwise rough day for Lamb, who dropped multiple passes. But that gain helped the Cowboys secure the win.

Then, in the fourth quarter, it was George Pickens' turn. Pickens continued to make his case as the WR1 in Dallas with a sensational grab in traffic over two Eagles for a 43-yard gain.

Two plays later, Prescott ran it in himself for an 8-yard touchdown to tie the game at 21-21.

The Cowboys blew a chance to take a lead lead after forcing a fumble on a punt return to take over at the Philadelphia 8. But given a second chance to take a late lead, Prescott looked again to Pickens with the pass that set up Aubrey's game-winning field goal.

Pickens finished the day with 9 catches for 146 yards and 1 touchdown, compared to 4 catches, 75 yards and 3 drops by Lamb. Prescott completed 23 of 36 passes for 354 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception as the Cowboys outgained an Eagles team that got off to a 21-0 lead, 473 yards to 339.

The Cowboys' playoff hopes remain a long shot. But they kept them alive with a win over their biggest rival.
