Jameis Winston catches wild trick-play TD before Jahmyr Gibbs leads Lions comeback over Giants

Jameis Winston did it all Sunday afternoon in Detroit ... but it was not enough.

Winston, in his second start of the season for an injured Jaxson Dart, threw two touchdowns and caught a third himself at Ford Field against the Detroit Lions. But somehow he was upstaged by Jahmyr Gibbs and the Lions, who came storming back to pull off a 34-27 overtime win over the New York Giants.

While they didn't get the job done, Winston's trick-play in the fourth quarter turned heads.

Winston faked a handoff up the middle and then pitched the ball off to wide receiver Gunner Olszewski before taking up the left side of the field, seemingly unnoticed. Winston, after waving his hand in the air frantically to get Olszewski's attention, caught the pass and then shook off linebacker Derrick Barnes before walking into the end zone.

That put the Giants up 27-17 at the time.

That lead didn't hold. Gibbs broke through several Giants defenders just a few plays later and rattled off a 49-yard touchdown run. Winston threw a bad interception on his first play out after that touchdown run, which gave the Lions the ball back.

Winston came up with another incredible play later in the fourth quarter. On a deep third down, Winston somehow avoided a sack, scrambled and then found Theo Johnson 39 yards downfield to keep their drive alive.

The Giants got all the way down inside the 10-yard line, but Winston failed to find the end zone on fourth down. That gave the Lions the ball back with just under three minutes to go.

Jake Bates drilled a 59-yarder to tie the game up with just under 30 seconds to go, which eventually forced overtime.

Then, on the first play of the extra period, Gibbs erupted for a 69-yard run after making it through the Giants' line untouched to give the Lions their first lead of the game.

The Lions quickly stopped the Giants after that to escape with the win.

Jared Goff went 28-of-42 for 279 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in the win for Detroit (7-4). Gibbs had 219 rushing yards and three total touchdowns, and Amon-Ra St. Brown had 149 receiving yards and a score on nine catches.

Winston finished 18-of-36 passing for 336 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. His first touchdown of the day came on New York's opening drive when he found Wan'Dale Robinson for a 39-yard score. He hit Isaiah Hodgins for a 12-yard touchdown pass before halftime, too.

Winston spent last season with the Cleveland Browns, and then signed a two-year, $8 million deal with New York. He took over for Dart last weekend after Dart landed in concussion protocol; the Giants fell 27-20 to the Green Bay Packers.

Tyrone Tracy had 62 rushing yards on 20 carries to lead the Giants, and Robinson had 156 receiving yards and a score on nine catches. The Giants (2-10) have now lost six straight and were the first NFL team officially eliminated from the postseason race.

Though Dart is sure to get his job back when he's healthy — the team took him with the No. 25 overall pick in the draft earlier this year, and he's looked solid after winning the starting job over Russell Wilson a few weeks ago — this stretch for Winston has been incredibly fun. That has to count for something.
