A man says he won't be calling his nephew by his legal name, simply because he finds the name to be "too silly."

In a post published on Reddit, the 24-year-old man writes that his brother and his wife announced that they were pregnant about six months ago, and he immediately called to congratulate them.

"When I asked him if they thought about any names yet and he mentioned Maverick as an option. I flatly said, 'I'm not going to call your son Maverick,' " he writes. "I find this name silly and felt he didn't understand the gravity of bestowing someone a name. When you name a baby, you're also naming an adult. Can you really imagine an important business man named Maverick?"

"Guess he took this as a joke because he chuckled a bit," he continues. "Some months go by and lo and behold they went with Maverick."

Given that the poster lives a few states away from the rest of his family, he didn't meet the newborn until early July.

"Because I'm a man of my word, I decided to call him Ricky, which I felt was a compromise and also a cute nickname," the poster explains.

"When my brother asked me why I was calling him that, I reminded him what I told him. He called me a childish prick who needs to grow up," he adds. "In response I told him he ruined his son's life with that horrible joke of a name. He told me to get out of his house so I did."

The brothers haven't spoken in days and the poster feels "absolutely awful" for what he said.

"My family is split. My dad says I'm an a----- but my mom actually thanked me," he writes. "She told me I said what many other people were too polite to say."

While the family is divided, most of the people in the comments section insisted that the poster was in the wrong.

"It's none of your business what name is chosen for a baby unless it's yours. It's rude to call the baby by a different name, too," one commenter chimed in.

"Get over yourself," another added.
