The Los Angeles Chargers and left tackle Rashawn Slater have signed a four-year, $114 million contract extension, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

The contract includes $92 million in guaranteed money and makes Slater the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history, per the report. The Chargers confirmed Sunday that Slater had signed the deal, but did not announce terms.

The Chargers selected Slater with the No. 13 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He's approaching the final year of his five-year rookie contract that's due to pay him $19 million in 2025, per a fifth-year team option.

The Chargers drafted Slater a year after selecting quarterback Justin Herbert. He has emerged as a strong blindside protector for Herbert and one of the better offensive linemen in the NFL.

Slater was named second-team All-Pro and to the Pro Bowl during his rookie season. A biceps injury limited him to three games in his second season, but he returned to play 17 games in 2023 and 15 in 2024. He was named to the Pro Bowl for the second time last season.

In addition to protecting Herbert's blindside, Slater is the blocking anchor of a run-heavy offensive approach under head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman. The Chargers revamped their backfield in the offseason and project to lead with a run-heavy approach again in 2025.

The Chargers signed former Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Bowl running back Najee Harris as a free agent. They then selected North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton with their first-round draft pick in April. And just before the start of training camp, the Chargers signed running back RB Nyheim Hines to add to the rotation.

The Chargers are seeking to open up the passing game for Herbert by establishing the run and improve on an offense that ranked 20th in the league last season with 324.2 yards per game. Slater is a key piece of that equation.

The Chargers are also looking to return to the playoffs for the third time in four seasons as they seek their first postseason win of the Herbert era. They'll do so playing out of an AFC West in which the reigning AFC champion Chiefs and Broncos are also projected as playoff contenders.
