The security gates, which have been launched to different Safeway shops impacted by shoplifting, require clients to scan their receipt to exit[/caption]

The situation within the northwest of the town has been affected by crime including a robbery that occurred on the day the retailer made the announcement.

Such crime has put clients and staff in peril and it's hoped that this extra technique, whereas it won't forestall robberies, will help individuals really feel protected and scale back shoplifting.

Safeway stated in a press release that the modifications to the store are "to take care of a protected and welcoming buying experience for our clients."

"Like different native businesses, we are engaged on ways to curtail escalating theft so we will ensure the well-being of our staff and foster a welcoming surroundings for our clients," the assertion learn.

"These long-planned security enhancements have been carried out with these objectives in thoughts."

Safeway is sending a defiant message to shoplifters after a CVS store in the same space announced that it will close on the finish of February after being targeted and ransacked by thieves.

Clients are combined in their response to the new measures on the Safeway store.

"I'm hoping that it really pays off, that it works for us as a result of this theft thing is turning into really out of hand," nearby resident Pete, informed Wtop news.

"We've acquired to attempt something earlier than they close it down."

"I'm very unhappy that we've come to this," fellow local Lindsey stated.

"It's a tragic commentary on everyone in the city."

Nevertheless, one other stated that the new gates are "just a chance to extend surveillance and criminalization of the general public, especially Black and brown communities."

The gates have been rolled out in different areas including San Francisco and buyers have shared their experiences of them on X, previously Twitter.

Many patrons famous that the gates fail to stop determined shoplifters and simply frustrate innocent shoppers.

"They've these at the SW Safeway. The safety guards do nothing when individuals bounce over them, but yell at people who have to get carts (there are by no means carts by the entrance)," one shopper said.

Another customer said the same thing, "Shoplifters will simply leap over or push via these.

"We'd like accountability! Arrest and prosecute criminals! Sufficient is sufficient!"

"They added these to 4th St SW Safeway too. Frankly, it's super annoying," a 3rd said.

The U.S. Sun has contacted Albertsons, Safeway's father or mother company, for remark.
