The biomedical engineering major acquired an e-mail from a professor at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Clayton, 19, stated the email seemed to be from an economics professor referred to as Dr. Marco Airaudo who provided him $500 to research prescription drugs, in line with ABC affiliate WPVI-TV.

"500 bucks for about what two, three hours of labor, I assumed it was a very good deal for me," Clayton stated.

He added that he and his mother, Kimberly Justice, had completed some research and thought the job was official.

"Even once I appeared into it I was like professional professor, that's his area of research it is sensible that they might do it," Kimberly stated.

The scam began when Clayton was despatched two checks totaling $3,600 and was informed to money them.

Clayton stated he was then instructed to Venmo greater than $3,000 to another scholar in this system for work, and he despatched the money in two tons.

"I assumed that was odd," he stated.

"The subsequent day after I despatched the 1,250 cost I checked out my financial institution assertion and I was within the unfavourable for some cause," he added.

Kimberly, a civil lawyer from Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, round 10 miles outdoors of Philadelphia, contacted the professor and came upon the e-mail was not from him and it was from scammers who had used his id.

"And the response I obtained back was they knew about it, and he's like 'Oh however I hadn't come across your son's identify,'" Kimberly stated.

Clayton added that his financial institution didn't refund the misplaced money and he was upset concerning the rip-off.

"I was on my means on my option to being a research assistant I assumed," he stated

"I was sort of mad at myself, more dissatisfied in myself that I really feel for the scam," he added.

The mom and son reported the crime to the authorities.

Drexel College informed WPVI that it could not intercept outdoors emails however it had reported the scam to authorities.
