Phoenix, who developed the then-untitled movie with Haynes and author Jon Raymond, pulled out five days ahead of production, which was set to start in Guadalajara last summer.

Back in 2023, Haynes told IndieWire of the movie's subject matter, "Joaquin was pushing me further and going, 'No, let's go further,' " adding, "This will be an NC-17 film."

"The whole experience was prompted by Joaquin," the May December filmmaker continued. "It was prompted by his daring, his desire to push through barriers and to really get into the uncomfortable places about this relationship. And yet it felt like a very organic process."

Phoenix, 50, was asked about the exit at the Venice International Film Festival last September during a press conference for his movie Joker: Folie à Deux, and declined to comment.

"If I do [speak about the reasoning], I'd just be sharing my opinion from my perspective, and the other creatives aren't here to say their piece, and it just doesn't feel like that would be right," the Oscar winner told reporters.

"I'm not sure how that would be helpful. So I don't think I will," he added.

Pascal has starred in three films released this summer: Materialists, Eddington (which also costarred Phoenix) and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

One summer hit that Pascal was supposed to appear in originally and didn't is Zach Cregger's horror flick Weapons. Pascal was originally attached to play Josh Brolin's character Archer Graff, a dad hell-bent on finding his missing son.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cregger, 44, said of the cast changes that included Pascal and others, "We had the strike, and then Pedro Pascal's schedule threw us into turmoil. I had to recast the entire movie."

"This is what happens, right? The strikes delayed us, and then when you delay, people's schedules get conflicts, and then you're back at square one," he added. "I bear no ill will towards anybody. We just kept getting delayed and delayed. It's like a domino effect. So I had to start over again."

1 / 2Book Review - All This Could Be Yours - 3x2 for APnewsThis cover image released by Minotaur shows "All This Could Be Yours" by Hank Phillippi Ryan. (Minotaur via AP)

Author Hank Phillippi Ryan has written a crime novel titled "All This Could Be Yours" about an author on tour to promote a crime novel titled "All This Could Be Yours." As Ryan says in an endnote, it's very meta.

The fictional author is Tess Calloway, a woman and mother who quit a well-paying corporate job where she felt "invisible" in order to pursue her dream of becoming a novelist. The hero of Tess's book is Annabelle, a woman who defies the limitations society places of women in order to do what she wishes with her "one life."

As Tess's book tour opens, her debut novel is already on The New York Times bestseller list. At each stop, she is greeted by adoring crowds, mostly women who chant "One life!" and proclaim that Annabelle inspired them to change their own.

Nevertheless, the tour is exhausting. Every day takes Tess to a new city, a different hotel, a fresh crowd of admirers. She has to rely on FaceTime to keep in touch with her husband and two young children, and her vivid imagination tortures her with fears about what could be going wrong at home.

Before long, however, odd things start happening on the tour. She finds a mysterious locket in a hotel room night stand. At another stop, someone breaks into her room and leaves a pair of earrings. A sheet of paper with a vaguely threatening message is slid under her door. Someone takes her carry-on from an airplane overhead bin.

Worse, Tess starts getting uncomfortable personal questions about her past at bookstore appearances and on social media — uncomfortable because she has long harbored a dark secret. It's one that she fears would destroy her new career and her family if it were ever revealed.

In Tess, Ryan has created a likeable, compelling, complex character who struggles to come to terms with her past and finds the courage to confront the danger she faces. The story starts slowly, the tension building page by page toward a series of twists that readers are unlikely to see coming.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement in a joint Instagram post on Tuesday, Aug. 26

An enchanting floral installation that included a number of symbolic flowers and foliage was the setting for the moment

PEOPLE spoke to multiple florists to break down the hidden meaning behind each bloom, and how it relates specifically to the Grammy-winning singer

As Taylor Swift is the queen of easter eggs, it's no surprise her fiance Travis Kelce made sure to incorporate stunning flowers with a symbolic meaning in his fairytale proposal.

After Kelce and Swift announced their engagement in an Aug. 26 Instagram post, PEOPLE spoke to floral experts to break down the meaning behind the blooms in the lovebirds' "enchanted garden" proposal.

Ashley Greer — a florist and owner of the D.C.-based Atelier Ashley Flowers, who worked on the Obama White House Christmas trees — has studied flower symbolism for many years for her business. Her interpretations incorporate various cultural traditions and historical time periods, she says.

A number of lilies can be seen in Swift and Kelce's floral arrangements, woven into the metalwork and planters behind the couple, says Greer.

She even spotted some Snake Lilies in the mix, which she notes can also be referred to as Surprise Lilies. Devoted Swifties already know that snake symbolism often has ties to the singer's 2017 album Reputation.

Swift incorporated the slithering reptile into a number of fashion statements, including later on during the Eras tour when she rocked her iconic one-legged bodysuit.

Lilies alone are a symbol of "purity," adds Greer.

Vittorio Zunino Celotto/TAS24/Getty

In addition to lilies, the floral pro spotlights the limelight hydrangeas overflowing in the two large planters. These can represent "first steps or transitions," as well as the "release of old relationships that no longer serve you."

Similarly, the white knockout roses used for the display can symbolize "vibrant people and calming places," as well as the release of "any and all negativity."

Getty(3)

There are also Secret Garden Roses included in the arrangement, some with a lavender hue which might bring Swift's hit song "Lavender Haze" to some fans' minds.

The filler foliage in the display also has a symbolic meaning, including the willow branches, which Greer says represents "flexibility and adaptability." She adds, "It is of the subconscious and a reminder to trust our own inner wisdom."

"Willow" is also the name of a song off Swift's 2020 album evermore.

Examining the color palette of the setup, Greer explains how "the use of pink, white and green is extremely romantic, and speaks to true love."

This draws comparisons to some of Swift's greatest hits, including scenes from the "Love Story" music video, in which the singer is seen running through the woods until she finally reaches her love interest. The video's setting has a similar secret garden feel.

Kelce's enchanting proposal spot also shared a striking resemblance to the visuals used for Swift's 2019 album Lover, which showed the star posing in a lush garden.

UrbanStems' floral design manager Justin Lievano says the "lush and wild" engagement flowers have a "soft coquette-ish palette" evoking a similar feeling to Jean-Honoré Fragonard's classic painting "The Swing."

"I think the shot of them both under the floral arch is meant to feel very intimate, like we're getting a peek into their romantic world together," Lievano notes.

Lievano adds that the entire setup leans towards a more "airy or gestural arrangement," which is unlike the floral aesthetic he's seen other pro athletes use for their wedding and engagement photos.

He notes that Kelce's arrangement speaks to a certain "luxury" that the couple has, and that the hand-designed backdrop the NFL star organized signifies both his attention to detail and desire to create the perfect "private world of blooms" for Swift.

Swift and Kelce were first linked in 2023. They met after he revealed that he tried to give the singer a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it at one of her Eras Tour concerts. He then publicly declared his interest in Swift on his New Heights podcast in July 2023, and they began seeing each other shortly afterwards.

Two years later, on August 26, 2025, the couple shared photos of Kelce getting down on one knee and hugging and holding each other with the caption, "Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨" to announce the happy news of their engagement.

Deon J. HamptonAugust 28, 2025 at 1:57 AM

The family of a 4-year-old Oregon child who suffered severe brain damage after being put under general anesthesia before a dental procedure has filed a $22 million civil suit against the dentist.

The medical negligence lawsuit filed on July 30 in Multnomah County Circuit Court alleges that the child, identified as M.L. in the document, overdosed on sevoflurane, which made the heart to briefly stop beating until the child was resuscitated.

The episode left the child so severely brain-damaged that the child must relearn how to walk and talk, the lawsuit says. The dentist, Dr. Dustin M. Davis, the anesthesiologist, Lane D. Robinson, and Sunnyside Dentistry for Children, the office where they worked, are named as defendants.

Lawyers for the family said they have not received a response to the lawsuit.

M.L. visited Sunnyside Dentistry on July 24, 2024, for a routine dental procedure to address some cavities, the suit says, and the child was given anesthesia under the direction and care of Davis, the office's pediatric dentist and surgeon, with assistance from Robinson.

The procedure was done despite reservations from one of the child's parents, the lawsuit says.

Shortly after being administered the anesthesia, the child went into cardiac arrest in the dental chair and was resuscitated using chest compressions and epinephrine injections, the lawsuit says. The child was then taken to a hospital.

"The defendants failed to adequately monitor M.L.'s vitals or respond to signs of distress, allowing (the) heart to stop," the suit claims. "As a result, M.L.'s brain was damaged due to a lack of oxygen."

The child had visited the office to have several cavities filled, according to the family's attorney, Kirc Emerson. The child had come to the practice a few months prior, at 3 years old, and Davis had attempted to use nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, to perform the procedure. But the dentist recommended coming back at another time to use general anesthesia, the attorney said.

He said the family never received an explanation as to why Davis did not go through with the procedure using nitrous oxide.

M.L.'s "childhood has been materially altered because of this," Emerson said, adding the child spent six weeks in the hospital and despite being back home, has not fully recovered.

The lawsuit states that the dental procedure began at 5:51 a.m. and by 6:12 a.m., M.L. no longer had a pulse.

Robinson, the anesthesiologist, declined to comment Monday when reached by phone.

"I would love to give you my side of the story, but I think it would be much more wise if I deferred to my attorney," he said. "I'm sure you understand the delicacy of the position I'm in."

Robinson would not provide his lawyer's name, and Davis could not be reached for comment. It was not immediately clear whether he had retained an attorney. Sunny Dentistry for Children did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Davis has no record of malpractice violations, according to the Oregon Board of Dentistry. He has served as Sunnyside Dentistry's practicing dentist since 2021, according to the company's website.

He previously spent five years practicing pediatric dentistry in the Seattle area.

He earned a doctorate in dental surgery from Virginia Commonwealth University and completed his residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he specialized in pediatrics. He also earned a master's degree in oral sciences at the University of Illinois.

The lawsuit says M.L. can no longer sound out words, write, dress or use the bathroom without help.

The child has "regressed back to being an infant and has had to relearn all basic functions," such as talking and walking, the lawsuit says.

A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from deporting Kilmar Abrego Garcia until at least early October.

U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis said Wednesday she will extend her temporary restraining blocking his removal until Abrego Garcia's latest deportation challenge in court is resolved.

Judge Xinis scheduled an evidentiary hearing for Oct. 6 in the case challenging Abrego Garcia's potential deportation to Uganda. She said during a hearing on Wednesday that she will issue a ruling within 30 days of the Oct. 6 hearing.

MORE: Abrego Garcia's attorneys ask to reopen his immigration case to seek asylum

The judge also said that Abrego Garcia, who is currently being held in a detention center in Virginia, must remain in custody within a 200-mile radius of the court in Maryland.

Judge Xinis said she will not order Abrego Garcia released from immigration custody, saying that issue should be decided by an immigration judge. On Monday, Abrego Garcia's attorneys moved to reopen his immigration case and apply for asylum.

Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran native who had been living in Maryland with his wife and children, was deported in March to El Salvador's CECOT mega-prison -- despite a 2019 court order barring his deportation to that country due to fear of persecution -- after the Trump administration claimed he was a member of the criminal gang MS-13, which his family and attorneys deny.

He was brought back to the U.S. in June to face charges in Tennessee of allegedly transporting undocumented migrants within the U.S. while he was living in Maryland, to which has pleaded not guilty.

Shawn Thew/EPA/Shutterstock - PHOTO: Kilmar Abrego Garcia speaks at a rally prior to his check in at the ICE Baltimore Field Office following a rally, in Baltimore Maryland, August 25, 2025.

After being released on Friday while awaiting trial, he was taken into immigration custody upon checking in with the ICE office in Baltimore on Monday, and transferred to a detention center in Tennessee where authorities said he could be deported to Uganda on immigration charges.

Attorneys for Abrego Garcia filed an emergency motion Monday to reopen his immigration case in order to seek asylum, arguing that because Abrego Garcia was deported and then brought back to the U.S., he is now eligible to apply for asylum within one year of his last entry into the U.S.

In the filing, the attorneys also said that reopening the case is warranted to allow Abrego Garcia to designate Costa Rica as the country of removal should be be deported.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Jelani Woods' football comeback will continue with the New York Jets.

The tight end, who hasn't played in a regular-season game since 2022 because of injuries, was one of three players claimed on waivers by the Jets on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old Woods was among Indianapolis' final cuts Tuesday after he had seven catches for 75 yards in the preseason. He was a third-round draft pick of the Colts in 2022 out of Virginia and had a promising rookie season during which he caught 25 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns in 15 games, including two starts.

But Woods missed the following season with a hamstring injury and then was forced to sit out all of last season after suffering turf toe in training camp and requiring surgery. He bounced back this summer and was healthy but was caught in a numbers game with the Colts keeping four tight ends on their initial roster, including first-round pick Tyler Warren, Mo Alie-Cox, Will Mallory and Drew Ogletree.

With the Jets, the 6-foot-7, 253-pound Woods joins a tight ends room that includes second-round pick Mason Taylor, Jeremy Ruckert and Stone Smartt.

"A huge tight end that's going to help us as a blocker and as a receiver," coach Aaron Glenn said of Woods.

The Jets also claimed two players off waivers from the Chiefs: linebacker Cam Jones and offensive tackle Esa Pole.

Jones played in every game the last two seasons for Kansas City, including two starts, after being signed as an undrafted free agent out of Indiana.

"A very productive player," Glenn said. "Looking forward to him getting with this linebacker crew and really making noise on special teams for us."

Pole, a 6-7, 319-pound O-lineman, was signed as an undrafted rookie this year out of Washington State, where he played left tackle.

"A developmental guy, but I think he's got a lot of tools," Glenn said.

The Jets didn't immediately announce the three corresponding roster moves to add Woods, Jones and Pole.

New York did start to compile its practice squad, which includes quarterback Brady Cook; wide receivers Jamaal Pritchett and Quentin Skinner; defensive back Jordan Clark, son of former NFL safety Ryan Clark; safety Dean Clark; defensive linemen Eric Watts and Payton Page; linebacker Aaron "Boog" Smith; offensive linemen Kohl Levao and Leander Wiegand; and kicker Harrison Mevis — all of whom were waived by the Jets on Tuesday.

Center of attention

The competition for the starting center job is still going between Joe Tippmann and Josh Myers — and coach Aaron Glenn remains tight-lipped on whether either has the upper hand.

"It's still playing out," Glenn said.

When asked what his plans are for the position, Glenn said wryly: "To play a center."

Tippmann has started most of the last two seasons at center after being drafted in the second round out of Wisconsin in 2023. Myers was signed as a free agent in March after he played his first four seasons in Green Bay. He also has familiarity with quarterback Justin Fields; the two were teammates at Ohio State for two years.
