Julian Lewis is set to be Colorado's third starting quarterback of the season.
According to CBS Sports, the freshman is expected to start against West Virginia in Week 11. Lewis played most of the second half in Colorado's blowout loss to Arizona on Saturday night.
Lewis signed with Colorado in the early signing period and enrolled early. He was a four-star recruit according to Rivals and the No. 7 quarterback in the class of 2025.
The Buffaloes are looking for a spark after losing four of their last five games. Colorado has been outscored 105-24 in its last two games as its fallen to 1-5 in the Big 12 and 3-6 overall.
Deion Sanders' team needs to beat West Virginia, Arizona State and Kansas State to make a bowl game.
Lewis was 9-of-17 passing for 121 yards and a TD in the loss to the Wildcats. He was Colorado's third QB of the game after starter Kaidon Salter was 11-of-15 for 49 yards and backup QB Ryan Staub threw interceptions on his two pass attempts.
Lewis will be the third Colorado QB to start a game this season if he starts against the Mountaineers. Salter has been the team's primary starter but Staub started a loss to Houston.
The Arizona game was Lewis' second appearance of the season. With college football's rules allowing players to play in four games and still redshirt, Lewis could still redshirt if he appeared in two of Colorado's final three games of the season.
After Saturday night's game, Sanders said that he was willing to do what was best for his players in situations like that.
"You gotta understand, I'm for the kids. If that's what they want, that's what they'll get," Sanders said Saturday night when asked if Lewis could still redshirt this season. "I'm not going to mandate you gotta play, no, no, whatever's best for these young men's careers, I'm for that."
