On October 31, American Horror Story announced that Wicked star Ariana Grande would be joining the cast for the show's 13th season. Ryan Murphy Productions posted a simple text Reel on Instagram with cast names in alphabetical order and Grande popped up.
The names were set to the song "I'll Be Seeing You" by Vera Lynn and included some glimpses of future horrors with the message, "Surprise, bitch. I bet you thought you'd seen the last of me."

In a January 2025 interview with Variety's Awards Circuit podcast, Grande talked about how being in Wicked made her want to perform more as an actor rather than a pop star when she was asked about "what's next" for her career.
