Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson star in new Netflix documentary series

Oh how fast the night changes.

Former One Direction bandmates Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson are collaborating — but not on new music. The duo are getting together for a three-part U.S. road trip documentary set to premiere on Netflix.

The series is described as "a spontaneous adventure of reconnection, exploration, and a lot of laughter." It will see the singers reunite and discuss life, love, and loss as they delve into their personal lives, their careers since departing the band, and the tragic death of fellow band member Liam Payne. It will be helmed by Nicola Marsh, whose credits include Demi Lovato's doc Child Star and Stay on Board: The Leo Baker Story.

The series hails from Campfire Studios with Ross Dinerstein and Rebecca Evans attached to executive produce. The studio previously worked on titles including SmartLess: On the Road and America's Sweethearts: The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.

News of the series comes a year after Payne died on Oct. 16, 2024 of "multiple traumas" and "internal and external hemorrhages" after falling from a third-floor balcony at Buenos Aires' CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Palermo, per an autopsy report. His former bandmates — Malik, Tomlinson, Harry Styles and Niall Horan — reunited for the first time in years to attend the singer's Nov. 20 funeral.

Representatives for Styles and Horan did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly's request for comment regarding the documentary series.

Speculation about Malik and Tomlinson collaborating on a secret project first emerged after they were photographed together having a night out in New York City in September. Tomlinson recently dodged questions about the project during a sit-down with iHeartRadio. When a reporter asked about speculation that Tomlinson and Malik are teaming up, he coyly replied, "I heard that. I thought that was pretty interesting, pretty astute."

Asked more directly what fans should expect, he said, "I just supposed they'd have to wait and see."

The reunion between Malik and Tomlinson is especially meaningful for fans given there was once tension between the duo, dating back to a series of 2015 social media posts, after Malik exited the group.

Two years later, Tomlinson confirmed that they were on better terms, telling Sirius XM, "We've got to a point now where, you know, we can just really be happy for each other. Things have happened in the past, of course. Yeah, it's great. His first song is an absolute smash."

More recently, Tomlinson attended one of Malik's shows for his "Stairway to the Sky" tour. At the Jan. 30 show, Malik told the crowd that the concert felt "kind of special," as he explained, "An old friend of mine is here supporting me tonight. I don't want to give his location away, but Louis is here tonight."

Payne, Horan, Styles, Malik, and Tomlinson were part of one of the biggest bands in the world after the five appeared on Britain's The X Factor as solo artists. They were later combined into a group by judges Nicole Scherzinger and Simon Cowell. Together, the band had over two dozen songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart throughout their career, including top hits "What Makes You Beautiful," "Story of My Life," "Best Song Ever," and "Perfect." Malik departed the band in 2015 to pursue his own creative endeavors. A year later, after five albums and four world tours, One Direction went on indefinite hiatus, prompting each of the band members to venture out as solo artists.
