Two large dogs killed a 2-year-old boy while the owner of a day care center in Georgia, who told officials she was napping, left him unattended, police said.
When first responders arrived at a residence in Valdosta at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, they discovered the child was dead, Valdosta police said in a statement.
Earlier that day, a woman dropped the toddler off with Stacy Wheeler Cobb, 48, who was operating an unlicensed day care center at her residence, police said.
The boy was not attended to be there for more than two hours, and Cobb told officials she was napping and thought the child was, as well, the statement said.
The boy appeared to have gotten outside and into Cobb's backyard. He opened a kennel and released two large Rottweilers, which attacked and killed him, police said.
The victim was the only child at Cobb's home at the time, the statement said.
Cobb was arrested Saturday, police said. She has been charged with two felonies: second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children.
Jail records Monday showed that Cobb is still in the Lowndes County Jail, and it was unclear whether she has an attorney.
"This is a horrible and tragic event that should have never occurred, but because of negligence on this offender's behalf, a mother has tragically lost a child," Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan said in the statement.
Police, who did not identify the victim and the family, are investigating.
