King Charles was in military mode at his latest royal engagement

The King visited RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, Scotland, one of just two Quick Reaction Alert stations that protect the U.K.'s airspace 24 hours a day

The monarch also laughed off meeting a crying baby, whose mother smiled as she tried to console the little one

King Charles suited up for a duty expected to be one of the last before a summer break in Scotland, where one tiny well-wisher had a memorable reaction to meeting the monarch.

On Aug. 6, the King visited RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, Scotland, traveling to represent a Squadron Standard and learn more about the capabilities of the Royal Air Force base. King Charles is Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and a RAF veteran himself, having earned his wings in 1971.

The sovereign, 76, stepped out wearing his Marshal's uniform with the Order of the Thistle insignia, reflecting his position in Scotland's highest order of chivalry, which his wife, Queen Camilla, was inducted into last year.

During the main event of the outing, the Stand-Up Parade for Number 42 (Torpedo Bomber) Squadron, the King had the honor of presenting the Squadron with their standard (another name for ceremonial flag) to recognize the unit re-forming.

The sovereign then delivered remarks, met crew and guests, toured an elite P-8A Poseidon aircraft and mingled with local children from the Airplay Youth support program and their families, who live on or near the base.

Cameras caught one baby having an age-appropriate reaction to all the commotion, crying when the King came by. A video of the interaction showed the mother laughing as she tried to console her little one, who let out a cry as they spoke to King Charles. The monarch appeared to tell a quick joke in reaction, which made those around him smile.

RAF Lossiemouth is the force's only main operating base in Scotland and one of just two Quick Reaction Alert stations that guard the U.K. airspace for 24 hours a day.

In his speech, the sovereign opened up about the honor of presenting the new flag and pointed out how his old school, Gordonstoun, was nearby.

"It gives me the greatest possible pleasure to be here with you all today to mark the standing up of 42 Torpedo Bomber Squadron, and to present you with your new Standard. I am especially pleased to be doing so here at R.A.F. Lossiemouth, the beating heart of the United Kingdom's long range maritime patrol aircraft capability, and an air station at the end of whose runway my old school, Gordonstoun, is situated!" the sovereign said.

"In the 1960s, it was the Royal Navy's Buccaneer aircraft that took off and landed over us and, as part of the Cadet Corps, we regularly used to train or be trained by personnel on the station."

Elsewhere in his address, the King mentioned how his late father, Prince Philip, last presented the Squadron Standard, exalting the flag as "a symbol of your illustrious heritage and a testament to the sacrifices and achievements of those who have served under its banner."

King Charles has been in Scotland since at least July 28 and might be staying at the Castle of Mey, one of the homes in his royal portfolio, given the hint that the residence has been closed to the public since July 24.

His outing to RAF Lossiemouth may be one of his final official outings in August, as he usually enjoys a few weeks off from public duties around this time of year to relax and recharge before fall begins.

The King has continued his late mother Queen Elizabeth's tradition of spending the end of the summer in Scotland and Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire has been used as a gathering place for generations.
