Much like his art, David Lynch was full of surprises.
The cast of one of the legendary filmmaker's most beloved projects, Twin Peaks, is currently in the middle of a nationwide tour, Twin Peaks: Conversation With The Stars. While Lynch, who created the series with Mark Frost, could not be part of the tour — he was supposed to participate prior to his death in January — both he and his "movie mind" were at the heart of each story shared at the New York City show.
At one point, an audience member at the N.Y.C. tour stop — held at Sony Hall on Sunday, Aug. 10 — asked panel member Sabrina S. Sutherland, a longtime Lynch collaborator, to share a "little-known fact" about her late colleague. Sutherland — a Twin Peaks fan turned Twin Peaks producer, thanks to a "very lucky" cold call — was quick with her reply.

"He's hysterically funny, like, all the time," she said of the Mulholland Drive writer-director, "and he would make me laugh every day 'til I cried."
Seemingly referring to Lynch's tendency to tackle serious subject matter in his works (see: Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, etc.) Sutherland — who worked on seasons 2 and 3 of Twin Peaks — then admitted that fans of the director's work may be taken aback by her answer.
"So that's probably not what you expect of David Lynch, but that's true," she told the crowd of Twin Peaks devotees. "He's a funny, funny guy."
Elsewhere during the evening, Sutherland — who was also a producer on Lynch's 2006 film Inland Empire — revealed that the late filmmaker planned to participate in the Twin Peaks reunion tour via video call before his sudden death at age 78.
"David was going to be with us on this tour," she told the crowd. "He really wanted us to do this, and he was gonna Zoom in and answer some questions. Unfortunately, he passed away in January."
After Lynch's death, several stars shared more insight into the legendary director through their touching tributes to the trailblazer.
Kyle MacLachlan, who starred as Special Agent Dale Cooper on Twin Peaks and worked with Lynch on Dune and Blue Velvet, credited the creative and "dear friend" for kickstarting his career.
"Forty-two years ago, for reasons beyond my comprehension, David Lynch plucked me out of obscurity to star in his first and last big-budget movie," MacLachlan wrote in an Instagram post, referring to Lynch's 1984 Dune adaptation. "He clearly saw something in me that even I didn't recognize. I owe my entire career, and life really, to his vision."

"While the world has lost a remarkable artist, I've lost a dear friend who imagined a future for me," the actor wrote, "and allowed me to travel in worlds I could never have conceived on my own."
Naomi Watts, who starred in both Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks: The Return, also credited the director for putting her "on the map" while mourning him in a social media tribute of her own. "The world I'd been trying to break into for ten plus years, flunking auditions left and right," she wrote on Instagram. "Finally, I sat in front of a curious man, beaming with light, speaking words from another era, making me laugh and feel at ease."
"I just cannot believe that he's gone," Watts' post concluded. "I'm in pieces but forever grateful for our friendship."
