Teachers union bosses split over Supreme Court ruling on parental rights to shield kids from LGBTQ content

Joshua Q. NelsonJune 30, 2025 at 8:00 PM

The bosses of America's largest teachers' unions appear to have taken opposite stances on the recent Supreme Court ruling about LGBTQ books in school, with one saying the "expertise of trained educational professionals" should have been deferred to, while the other said, "Parents must have a say."

On Friday, the justices decided 6-3 in Mahmoud v. Taylor that parents could opt their children out of a Maryland public school system's lessons that contain themes about homosexuality and transgenderism if they feel the material conflicts with their religious faith.

"Students pay the price when books are censored and educators are silenced," National Education Association President Becky Pringle said in reaction to the decision on BlueSky.

"Today, in the ruling on Mahmoud v. Taylor, the Supreme Court failed students. They have discounted and ignored the expertise of trained educational professionals, and harmed students in the process," she added. "Shameful."

Authors Blast 'Harmful' Scotus Ruling Allowing Parents To Opt Kids Out Of Reading Their Lgbtq+ Books

The National Education Association is the largest teachers' union in the country, presiding over 3 million members.

Read On The Fox News App

However, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten said on Friday that parents and families should be respected.

"We have to respect all children and all families. Bad facts make bad law. Mahmoud should have been worked out on a local level, it's a shame it went all the way to SCOTUS," Weingarten said. "Parents must have a say about their own kids, they are our partners in education."

A child holds a sign as people supporting the right to opt-out their children from classes containing LGBTQ-related content demonstrate outside the US Supreme Court, as the court hears oral arguments in Mahmoud v. Taylor case, in Washington, DC, April 22, 2025.

Supreme Court To Hear Case On Lgbtq-themed Storybooks And Parents' Right To Opt Out

Weingarten shared similar sentiments on "The Story" in April, when the Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the case.

"This is something that has to be happening at the local level and not in the Supreme Court," Weingarten said, while also noting that the books containing LGBTQ content are not ones she would read to children.

The two teachers' union bosses usually align in political views, having both endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.

Library books on table

In the past, Weingarten has pushed back on book challenges from parents. In 2023, Weingarten launched a hotline called "Freedom to Teach and Learn" to report instances of book banning and challenges against curricula.

Weingarten, the leader of the 1.7 million-member union, claimed at the time that "MAGA lawmakers have used culture wars to divide communities and other schemes that drain resources from public education."

'Gossip Girl' and 'White Lotus' Alums Lead Popular Romance Book's Movie Adaptation originally appeared on Parade.

Fandoms are colliding in the best possible way: Penn Badgley and Meghann Fahy are gearing up to play enemies-to-lovers in the film adaptation of Sarah Hogle's beloved romance novel You Deserve Each Other.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed on Monday, June 30, that the Gossip Girl alum, 38, and the White Lotus actress, 35, will portray Nick and Naomi in the Amazon MGM romantic comedy based on Hogle's 2020 book. Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn — who are known for writing genre staples such as 1999's Never Been Kissed and 2009's He's Just Not That Into You — will direct the movie.

You Deserve Each Other has become a favorite book among romance readers since its release. The story follows Nick and Naomi, a couple who are about to get married but have fallen out of love. As the wedding approaches, the lovers-to-enemies both secretly try to get the other to call off the nuptials through a series of pranks and sabotage before ultimately finding their way back to becoming lovers again.

News of Badgley and Fahy's upcoming project comes as the costars teased each other in an eyebrow-raising exchange on Instagram on Monday.

"I don't normally do this, but my wife [Domino Kirke] and I just finished Sirens," Badgley said in the video, referring to Fahy's Netflix series that debuted in May. "Want to give her her flowers. Now obviously there's Julianne [Moore], there's Kevin [Bacon], there's Milly [Alcock] but this Meghann Fahy, this newcomer, this, like, refreshing, gawky beauty — love it. Love you."

Fahy responded in the comments section, "Penn! This is so kind. Thank you. Tell Domino I say hi. And that her taste is flawless," to which Badgley replied, "Our* taste. Dom says hi!"

"Oops haha. Gawky tho," Fahy continued, adding a thinking-face emoji.

Badgley then doubled down on his description, writing, "I meant it as a compliment! Long arms are so gorgeous but historically less featured."

Fahy jokingly took offense to Badgley's remarks. "Chill on the body stuff," she responded, to which he retorted, "Whoa I've obviously been very supportive and complimentary but this feels like a trap."

In her final comment, Fahy referenced Badgley's hit Netflix series, You, in which he played stalker Joe Goldberg from 2018 to 2025.

"There you go again with that trapping thing," she quipped. "Heard you did a lot of that on your show. I never watched it."

If Badgley and Fahy's back-and-forth on social media is any indication of their You Deserve Each Other characters' sizzling banter, fans are in for a real treat.

Former Democratic Rep Advises Mamdani's Opponent How 'To Go After Him'

Former Democrat Tennessee Rep. Harold Ford Jr. said Monday on Fox's "The Five" that whoever emerges as the "leading opponent" to New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani should press him on policies that involve race and wealth.

Since winning New York City's Democratic mayoral primary, Mamdani has come under scrutiny for proposals that could impact the nation's largest city if he wins in November. Ford discussed Mamdani's refusal to denounce the phrase "globalize the intifada" and also Mamdani's push to tax "whiter neighborhoods." Ford called the latter idea "the most racist thing to do."

"I didn't understand his interview with Kristen Welker. He said that he didn't want to add race or introduce race to this. But he is, and he doesn't want to police speech. But I guess it's OK for him to add any kind of speech he wants and just wrap it or defend it with the notion of free speech. I wonder what he thinks about the word slavery?" Ford asked.

"Is that something you don't want to talk about? Or what he thinks about the N-word? Does he have friends who use that word, and we may misunderstand it?" Ford asked. "To talk about wealth and race, I think, is the most racist thing to do. So I hope if he's going to be — he is the nominee for the Democratic Party. I hope he understands that and hope he reassesses how he talks about these things because a lot of people are listening and a lot of people reacting."

During an interview ahead of New York City's election day, Mamdani came under fire after appearing on "The Bulwark" and refusing to denounce the phrases "globalize the intifada" and "From the river to the sea" when host Tim Miller asked if they made him uncomfortable. Mamdani told Welker on Sunday that while it isn't the "language" he uses, his beliefs are grounded in "universal human rights." (RELATED: 'Capital Is Mobile': Hugh Hewitt Names Which City Would Get All Of NYC's Banking And Finance If Mamdani Wins)

WATCH:

In addition to his stance on controversial phrases, Mamdani has faced criticism for proposing tax hikes on wealthier neighborhoods, with his campaign website saying he would target "richer and whiter areas."

Ford said he gives Mamdani credit for recognizing that "affordability is the issue on most Americans' minds," but he also said President Donald Trump has been "the best" at addressing it.

"He's diagnosed the challenge, I think, here in New York — prices are way high for housing. Prices are way high for small business owners," Ford said. "But to give away everything free as the answer, I think it's hard to say to small business owners who pay taxes, who work hard, who want to instill a work ethic in their employees and their children and those around them that we should just give everything away for free."

"So whomever is his leading opponent, whether it's Andrew Cuomo or Eric Adams is certainly on the ballot, that they craft a message around these things to go after him and make him answer," Ford said. "How are you assessing wealth through race? But you can't condemn global intifada? You can't condemn or acknowledge the state of Israel's right to exist? These are real questions I think he's going to have."

Mamdani won New York City's Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday, beating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo by an estimated seven points, according to projections. A breakdown from The New York Times shows Mamdani led Cuomo by about 10 points among "middle income" voters and roughly 13 points among "higher income" voters, while Cuomo carried "lower income" voters by an estimated 13 points.

Along with his proposal to tax "whiter neighborhoods," Mamdani is seeking to raise an estimated $10 billion to fund a slew of free amenities, raise the minimum wage to $30, defund the police and end cooperation with the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal migrants.

Mamdani is expected to face off in November against current Democratic Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. Cuomo may also enter the race as an independent.

"Every day that I wake up aging like six months more than you, it bothers me," Ripa said on Monday's episode. "I resent the fact that you just aren't aging. At all. In any way. I mean, a little bit."

Consuelos teased that he's "fine with it," but his wife of 29 years said she was "resentful," because of how she has changed in age. "It's your fault!" she said.

Ripa told the audience, "He just now started to get like three hairs, and he's like, 'Can you see it? Can you see the gray hairs?'"

Consuelos said he knows better than to pluck them.

"No, don't pluck them," Ripa advised. "If I had plucked out my gray hairs, I'd be bald. Completely bald. Totally bald."

Ripa and Consuelos met in 1995, after he was cast on All My Children, which she had been on since 1991. They married in Las Vegas the following year and raised three children: Michael, 28; Lola, 24; and 22-year-old Joaquin. They've cohosted their morning talk show since 2023, although she had been on since 2001.

Their conversation about aging began as they spoke about the ideal age difference for couples. A recent study found that the happiest couples have a difference of zero to three years.

Ripa argued that women often look older because "we have greater stressors on our systems."

Israeli strike on cafe near Gaza City port kills dozens, hospital official says

 • Israeli strike on cafe near Gaza City port kills dozens, hospital official says

Kareem Khadder and Lauren Kent, CNNJune 30, 2025 at 7:04 PM

Damage at the cafe near the port in Gaza City on June 30, 2025, following an Israeli airstrike. - CNN

More than 40 people have been killed in an Israeli airstrike that hit a cafe near the port in Gaza City, according to the head of the territory's largest hospital.

Dr. Mohammad Abu Silmiya, the director of Al-Shifa hospital, said in an update on Monday night that at least 41 people had been killed and 75 injured in the strike.

Videos geolocated by CNN show thick smoke rising from the scene as well as widespread damage to the cafe and the surrounding area. They also showed bodies being removed on stretchers.

The Israel Defense Forces told CNN that the incident is "under review." In response to questions about the strike, the IDF said, "Earlier today (Monday), the IDF struck several Hamas terrorists in the northern Gaza Strip. Prior to the strike, steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians using aerial surveillance."

The Al-Baqa cafe was a well-known spot for students, journalists and remote workers, as it offered internet and a place to work by the Mediterranean coast.

A mourner attends the funeral of Palestinians killed in an Israeli airstrike on Al-Baqa cafeteria. - Mahmoud Issa/Reuters

Silmiya told CNN that "most of the casualties are women and children," including many students who were at the cafe for internet access.

He also said the hospital was short of ICU beds and anesthetics to treat the casualties. The death toll increased Monday night after some people died from their injuries.

"We are treating the injured on the hospital floor as no rooms and hospital beds are available," the hospital director added.

Among those killed was a freelance journalist, Ismail Abu Hatab, according to other journalists at the scene.

The Hamas-controlled Government Media Office said his death brought to 228 the number of journalists killed by Israeli military action in Gaza since October 2023.

Israeli leaders split ahead of date with Trump

News of the strike comes as Israeli leaders debate how to proceed with the war in Gaza ahead of an expected meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump on July 7.

A source familiar with the discussions told CNN Israel had yet to reach a policy decision after two consecutive days of meetings between Netanyahu and his most senior advisers and ministers. However, the source said Netanyahu is interested in a ceasefire deal.

Trump has openly pushed for an end to the war in Gaza, saying on Friday a ceasefire will be agreed to "within a week."

The small group of Israel's most senior government officials includes far-right ministers like Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, who have both loudly advocated for an intensification of the bombardment of Gaza, and other officials like Aryeh Deri, who favor a comprehensive hostage deal that would bring about the end of the war.

Ben Gvir, head of the Jewish Power party, insisted that a "decisive move" must be made in Gaza and expressed frustration that Israel was wasting time and opportunities with each passing day, the source said.

Netanyahu is trying to reach a decision before his trip to Washington, DC, to meet Trump, the source said, adding that they may have to come to a decision this week.

On Sunday, Netanyahu said "many opportunities have opened up" following Israel's military operations in Iran, including the possibility of bringing home the remaining hostages held in Gaza.

CNN's Tim Lister and Dana Karni contributed to this report.

The British rap punk duo known as Bob Vylan has been banned from the United States by the State Department after they led the crowd in chants of "death" to Israeli forces over the weekend at the Glastonbury Festival in the U.K.

State Department Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau said in a statement posted on X that the visas for the performer who goes by the name Bob Vylan, and his band of the same name, were pulled "in light of their hateful tirade at Glastonbury, including leading the crowd in death chants."

The State Department condemned the group's performance, accusing them of spreading hate.

In videos shared on social media, the rapper is seen on stage on Saturday leading the crowd in the chant of "free, free Palestine" followed by "death, death to the IDF," the abbreviation for the Isreal Defense Forces.

As Disturbed frontman David Draiman pointed out in an Instagram post criticizing Bob Vylan's performance, all Israeli citizens are required to serve in the IDF.

During the group's performance at Glastonbury, Vylan was also captured on video saying, "From the river to the sea, Palestine must be, will be, inshallah, it will be free."

Some claim that slogan, which refers to the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, calls for the destruction of Israel. The phrase has grown in popularity following the IDF's attacks in Gaza in retaliation for the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel.

Police in the U.K. are also investigating Vylan to determine if the chant at Glastonbury constitutes a hate crime, officials said Monday, per the outlet.

"We have received a large amount of contact in relation to these events from people across the world and recognise the strength of public feeling," according to a police department statement, per NBC. "There is absolutely no place in society for hate."

Kilmar Abrego Garcia's release delayed after lawyers warn of possible deportation

Washington — A federal magistrate judge said Monday that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran man who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador and then was returned to the United States to face criminal charges of human smuggling, will remain in federal custody until at least mid-July.

Abrego Garcia's lawyers had asked the judge Friday to delay his release, warning that the Trump administration had made conflicting statements about whether he will be deported after he is released ahead of a trial.

The brief order from U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara Holmes is the latest development in the case involving Abrego Garcia, whose removal to El Salvador in March emerged as a flashpoint in President Trump's immigration agenda and promise of mass deportations of immigrants in the U.S. unlawfully.

Abrego Garcia was indicted by a federal grand jury on two charges of human smuggling in late May, after which the government returned him to the U.S. to face federal prosecution. He has pleaded not guilty.

His return came weeks after a federal judge in Maryland ordered the Trump administration to facilitate Abrego Garcia's release from Salvadoran custody, which was affirmed by the Supreme Court. A U.S. immigration official had acknowledged Abrego Garcia's deportation to El Salvador was an administrative error, as he had been granted a legal status in 2019 that prevented the Department of Homeland Security from removing Abrego Garcia to his home country because of likely persecution by local gangs.

After Abrego Garcia was brought back to the U.S. to face the human smuggling offenses, the Justice Department requested he remain detained while awaiting trial. But Holmes earlier this month rejected that request and said he should be granted pretrial release.

The Justice Department appealed that decision, and a U.S. district judge set a hearing for July 16 on the request to revoke Holmes' release order.

But during a hearing last week to review the conditions of Abrego Garcia's release, lawyers for the Salvadoran man and the Justice Department acknowledged that he would likely be detained by the Department of Homeland Security and deported swiftly after being released from Justice Department custody, which would interfere with his criminal proceeding.

Holmes put off issuing her order of release, and Abrego Garcia's lawyers asked her to delay it further because of what they said are conflicting statements about whether he would be removed to a third country — one other than El Salvador — if detained by immigration authorities while awaiting trial.

Federal prosecutors did not oppose the request.

"A short delay will prevent the government from removing Mr. Abrego and allow time for the government to provide reliable information concerning its intentions," Abrego Garcia's lawyers wrote in a filing to Holmes.

The magistrate judge agreed to the request and said Abrego Garcia will remain in the custody of U.S. Marshals to allow for the July 16 hearing and a decision on the government's bid to revoke his release order.

Holmes said Abrego Garcia should be held separately from others waiting or serving sentences and given a "reasonable opportunity" to privately meet with his lawyers.

Japanese manufacturers are slightly more optimistic despite Trump tariff worries

TOKYO (AP) — Business sentiment among large Japanese manufacturers has improved slightly, according to a survey by Japan's central bank released Tuesday, although worries persist over President Donald Trump's tariffs.

The Bank of Japan's quarterly tankan survey said an index for large manufacturers rose to plus 13 from plus 12 in March, when it marked the first dip in a year. The survey is an indicator of companies foreseeing good conditions minus those feeling pessimistic.

Major manufacturers include auto and electronics sectors, whose exports to the U.S. drive the Japanese economy.

U.S. auto tariffs are a worry for major manufacturers like Toyota Motor Corp., but some analysts note global auto sales have held up relatively well in recent months.

The U.S. has imposed 25% tariffs on auto imports. Japanese automakers have plants in Mexico, where President Donald Trump has announced a separate set of tariffs. The U.S. has also imposed 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Japanese officials have been talking frequently with the Trump administration, stressing that Japan is a key U.S. ally.

Trump posted on his social media site Monday that Japan wasn't buying enough rice from the U.S. "They won't take our RICE, and yet they have a massive rice shortage," the president wrote, adding that a letter to Japan was coming.

Also on Monday, National Economic Council director Kevin Hassett told reporters at the White House that Trump "is going to finalize the frameworks we negotiated with a whole bunch of countries after the weekend."

The Bank of Japan, which has kept interest rates extremely low for years to encourage growth, is expected to continue to raise interest rates, but some analysts expect that to wait until next year.

The central bank raised its benchmark rate to 0.5% from 0.1% at the start of this year and has maintained that rate. The next Bank of Japan monetary policy board meeting is at the end of this month. The tankan findings work as important data in weighing a decision.

The weak yen has raised the cost of materials for Japan at a time when the U.S. dollar has been trading at around 140 yen, up considerably from about 110 yen five years ago. A weak yen is a boon for Japan's exporters by boosting the value of their earnings when converted into yen.

The tankan showed sentiment for large non-manufacturers fell to plus 34 from plus 35. That was better than some forecasts, which projected a deeper decline.

The Japanese government reported last week that the nation's unemployment rate in May stood at 2.5%, unchanged from the previous month.

Tiny Tuvalu seeks assurance from US its citizens won't be barred

Kirsty NeedhamJune 30, 2025 at 10:28 PM

By Kirsty Needham

SYDNEY (Reuters) -Tuvalu, a tiny Pacific nation that scientists predict will be submerged by rising seas, said it is seeking written assurance from the United States that its citizens will not be barred from entry after being apparently mistakenly included in a list of 36 countries facing visa bans.

An internal diplomatic cable signed by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio showed the United States, which has already barred entry for citizens from 12 countries, was considering expanding travel restrictions to the 36 countries, including three Pacific Island states, Reuters and other media reported last month.

Nations on the list would have 60 days to take corrective action, the cable showed.

The news had caused significant concern in Tuvalu, whose population of 11,000 is at risk from rising sea levels, and where a third of residents have applied to an Australian ballot for a landmark climate migration visa.

Tuvalu's ambassador to the United Nations, Tapugao Falefou, said he had been told by a U.S. official that Tuvalu's inclusion on the list was "an administrative and systemic error on the part of the U.S. Department of State".

In a statement on Tuesday, Tuvalu's government said it had not received any formal notification that it was on the list, and had also been assured by the United States embassy in Fiji it was "an error within the system".

"The Embassy has provided verbal assurances that there are no current restrictions on Tuvaluan nationals entering the United States, and that the matter is being reviewed with authorities in Washington," the statement from Tuvalu's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Labour and Trade said.

It added Tuvalu was seeking a "formal written confirmation to that effect and continues to engage the U.S. Government to ensure Tuvaluans are not unfairly affected".

The embassy did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

A U.S. official familiar with visa policy who is not authorized to speak publicly told Reuters "no decisions have been made, and any speculation is premature".

"Tuvalu's public statement mischaracterizes and omits some of the valid concerns the United States has with travelers from that country," the official added.

The other Pacific Islands listed in the cable were Vanuatu and Tonga.

Tonga's government had received an official U.S. warning, and was working on a response, Tonga media reported.

Vanuatu's government did not respond to a request for comment.
