Yet this is exactly what I found myself doing shortly after take-off from Tulsa, Oklahoma, one morning in 2002. Moments earlier, the function that reduces the force of the plane's nose as it pitches upwards had failed without warning — just as we lifted off with a planeload of passengers on board.
