Smokey Robinson Explains Inspiration Behind 1975 Song Believed to Be About His Affair with Babe Diana Ross
Did Smokey Robinson write "The Agony and the Ecstasy" about his affair with Diana Ross? In a new interview with The Times, the 84-year-old Motown legend was asked about the 1975 track from his A Quiet Storm album and whether its lyrics about "forbidden" love were inspired by his affair with Ross, now 80, during his marriage to first wife Claudette Rogers. "As a songwriter I could not possibly have experienced everything I've written about, and that song seemed like a good idea because so many people were in that situation," Robinson told the outlet.
