There are more than 103,000 people on the transplant list in the US, and more than a dozen die every day waiting for an organ. Every eight minutes, another person is added. An organ transplant is generally considered to be a last resort when other treatments have failed or when a person's condition has deteriorated to the point where no other recourse is possible. People may need a transplant for a multitude of reasons, including chronic and autoimmune conditions, heart disease, diabetes or cancer.
