A FORMER US Bank client recently claimed a debt collector came after him for a bank account that closed with a negative balance.

Despite claiming to have paid off the $35 debt, a collector said he owes $1,400.

A US Bank customer shared his debt collector story[/caption]

The man, Blake, shared his story on Facebook to find advice.

However, details of his story led many commenters to believe he was being scammed.

THE SITUATION

Blake said his debt collector contacted him over a $35 debt from a bank account that closed in 2007.

This debt was collected in 2014, he said.

Since then, he has moved addresses multiple times, eventually losing the documentation of his repayment.

Without a paper trail, Blake is unable to prove he paid off the debt.

"I now don't know what to do," he said. "They're threatening to sue me for $1400, which I, of course, cannot afford to pay and shouldn't even have to, as I had already resolved it."

However, in Washington, where Blake lives, there is a statute of limitations for debt collection.

If a collector doesn't claim the debt within 6 years of the last payment or default, they've run out of time.

"So I don't know how they could sue or get a judgment against me," he said.

Many commenters said they thought the repayment demands were part of a scam, rather than a legitimate debt collection.

"Chances are they are scammers," one comment said.

"Ignore & block," another added.

"Ignore them. Don't respond to anything," one said, adding an exception. "Do respond to a properly served summons."

The U.S. Sun reached out to US Bank for comment.

SCAM SLAMS

Scams can be expensive and may happen to anyone.

The Federal Trade Commission recently reported that in 2023, scammers took a record $10 billion from Americans.

Thousands of people were recently scammed out of their money by a Taylor Swift ticket marketing scheme.

Would-be concert-goers lost hundreds after buying tickets online that never arrived.

Fans of Beyonce and Coldplay were reportedly also hit by similar scams.

The JPMorgan CEO recently made statements comparing cryptocurrency to scams.

US Bank recently shut an account allegedly due to an Amazon charge.

A client has said the bank wanted him to drive '6 hours' to get money from a closed account.
