Retired US Air Force major general missing for weeks: What we know

Authorities in New Mexico are conducting an extensive search for a retired U.S. Air Force general who disappeared from his home nearly three weeks ago.

USA TODAY

Retired Maj. Gen.William "Neil" McCasland, 68, was last seen on the morning of Feb. 27 at his residence in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office said ina statement. His wife reported him missing later that day after returning home from a medical appointment to find he was gone, leaving behind his phone, glasses, and other personal items.

Following McCasland's disappearance, local authorities issued aSilver Alert, which is an advisory for a missing person who is 50 or older and has an "irreversible deterioration of intellectual faculties," according to the New Mexico Department of Public Safety. The sheriff's office initially reported that the alert was issued for McCasland due to unspecified "medical issues."

During anews conferenceon March 16, the sheriff's office said the Silver Alert remained in effect and had been issued because McCasland previously reported that he was experiencing a "mental fog." But Lt. Kyle Woods of the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office underscored that investigators do not believe McCasland was cognitively impaired at the time of his disappearance.

"There's no indication, and we are not putting forward that Mr. McCasland was disoriented, confused," Woods said. "Arguably, he would still be the most intelligent person in the room that any of us would be in. Highly intelligent, highly capable, but that information was given to us early on, and out of an abundance of caution, we escalated to a silver alert to try to garner as much public attention as possible to try to help locate him as soon as possible."

The sheriff's office said there were still no confirmed sightings of McCasland and reiterated that there is currentlyno evidence of foul play. The case remains an active missing-person investigation.

Timeline of William McCasland's disappearance

A repairman interacted with McCasland at his home at around 10 a.m. local time on Feb. 27, according to atimeline released by the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office.

McCasland's wife, Susan McCasland Wilkerson, left for a medical appointment at about 11:10 a.m. and returned shortly after noon to find him gone, the sheriff's office said. He left behind his phone, prescription glasses, and wearable devices at the residence.

After attempting to contact family and friends, McCasland Wilkerson reported him missing at about 3:07 p.m., and the investigation began immediately, according to the sheriff's office.

Investigators later determined several items appeared to be missing from the residence, including his hiking boots, a wallet, and a .38-caliber revolver with a leather holster, the sheriff's office said. Investigators believe he may have been wearing a light green long-sleeve outdoor shirt at the time of his disappearance.

On March 7, a gray U.S. Air Force sweatshirt was discovered about 1.25 miles east of the home and prompted additional search efforts in the area, the sheriff's office said. Authorities said the sweatshirt has not been confirmed to belong to McCasland, and initial testing detected no blood.

FBI joins in search for missing retired US Air Force general

The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office said investigators have conducted extensive search operations involving drones, helicopters, K-9 teams, and volunteer search crews.

Investigators have also expanded a neighborhood canvass to more than 700 homes while requesting security camera footage that could help determine whether McCasland left the area or indicate a direction of travel, the sheriff's office said.

Despite those efforts, investigators have not identified any confirmed sightings or videos showing McCasland "leaving the area or indicating a direction of travel," according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office described McCasland as an avid outdoorsman who frequently hikes, runs, and cycles in Albuquerque's Northeast Heights and the Sandia foothills. McCasland is 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs about 160 pounds. He has white hair and blue eyes.

Investigators are asking residents and local businesses to review security camera footage from Feb. 27 and Feb. 28, particularly from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 27, and submit any possible sightings. They are also asking hikers and others who were in the Sandia foothills during that time to review GoPro or cellphone recordings that might have captured McCasland.

Anyone who believes they see McCasland is urged to call 911 immediately, authorities said. The FBI's Albuquerque field office is assisting the investigation, though the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office remains the lead agency in the case.

New research:SETI thinks it could have missed calls from aliens. Here's why

McCasland's Air Force career and Wright-Patterson role

McCasland was the commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, according to his Air Force biography. He managed a $2.2 billion science and technology program, as well as $2.2 billion in additional customer-funded research and development.

He joined Wright-Patterson in 2011 andretired in 2013, reported theCincinnati Enquirer, part of the USA TODAY Network. The Dayton Air Force base was home to Project Blue Book in the 1950s and 1960s, according to "The Air Force Investigation into UFOs" published by Ohio State University.

During that time, it logged 12,618 UFO sightings, with 701 of those remaining "unidentified." The U.S. government created the project because of Cold War-era security concerns and Americans' obsession with aliens.

Because of McCasland's leadership role at Wright-Patterson, his disappearance has prompted speculation online about possible connections to classified programs, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Earlier this month, McCasland Wilkersonshared a statement on social mediato "dispel some of the misinformation circulating" about her husband and his disappearance. She said after his retirement, McCasland briefly worked on UFO-related projects by Tom DeLonge, a UFO researcher and guitarist for the band Blink-182.

"It is true that Neil had a brief association with the UFO community through Tom DeLonge, former frontman for Blink-182 and founder of the organization To The Stars,"McCasland Wilkerson wrote. "Neil worked with Tom for a bit shortly after his Air Force retirement as an unpaid (Neil's choice) consultant on military and technical/scientific matters to lend verisimilitude to Tom's fiction book and media activities."

She also noted that McCasland did not have "any special knowledge about the ET bodies and debris from the Roswell crash stored at Wright-Patt" and that it "seems quite unlikely that he was taken to extract very dated secrets from him."

5 big storylines to watch as NBA regular season hits stretch run

5 big storylines to watch as NBA regular season hits stretch run

It's the final month of the2025-26 NBA regular season.

USA TODAY Sports

This means teams are running out of chances to make their final arguments for playoff seeding, just like players are running out of time to convince voters to select them for individual awards. It also means the best basketball of the year is in front of us, as the two-month marathon that is the NBA playoffs gets underway April 18.

But, before we get ahead of ourselves, this should make for a compelling finish to what has been an interesting season.

Here are the top five storylines to watch for the rest of the 2025-26 NBA regular season:

NBA POWER RANKINGS:Are the surging Lakers a threat out West?

Oct. 26: The Dallas Mavericks' Cooper Flagg dunks the ball past the Toronto Raptors' Sandro Mamukelashvili at the American Airlines Center. Oct. 26: The Washington Wizards' Cam Whitmore dunks the ball against the Charlotte Hornets at Capital One Arena. <p style=Oct. 26: The Brooklyn Nets' Michael Porter Jr. dunks in front of the San Antonio Spurs' Victor Wembanyama at Frost Bank Center.

" style="max-width:100%; height:auto; border-radius:6px; margin:10px 0;" loading="lazy" /> Oct. 25: The Denver Nuggets' Christian Braun dunks the ball against the Phoenix Suns' Grayson Allen at Ball Arena. Oct. 24: The Memphis Grizzlies' Jaren Jackson Jr. dunks against the Miami Heat at FedExForum. Oct. 24: The Miami Heat's Bam Adebayo dunks over the Memphis Grizzlies' Jaren Jackson Jr. at FedExForum. Oct. 22: The New York Knicks' OG Anunoby goes up for a reverse dunk against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Madison Square Garden. Oct. 22: The Utah Jazz's Lauri Markkanen dunks against the Los Angeles Clippers at Delta Center.

Can anyone catch the Pistons and Thunder atop the Eastern and Western Conferences?

Since the start of the season, theOklahoma City Thunderhave led the West wire-to-wire, even in the face of significant time lost due to injury. In the East, theDetroit Pistsontook over sole possession of first on Nov. 7 and haven't looked back since.

Being practical, there are only two teams in the East — theBoston Celtics(3½ games back) and theNew York Knicks(5) — who can potentially catch Detroit. And while it doesn't help that Detroit has the 22nd-toughest remaining schedule (.485,per Tankathon.com) and that the Pistons don't play either Boston or New York the rest of the way, Detroit has been more vulnerable recently, losing six of its last 12 games.

The case is perhaps stronger for theSan Antonio Spurs, who are just 3 games back of Oklahoma City. San Antonio has the NBA's fourth-easiest remaining schedule (.452), while the Thunder have the league's 11th-toughest (.519). And while the Thunder are playing extremely well and should get Jalen Williams back soon, the Spurs have been the hottest team in basketball, losing just two of their last 20 games.

Will the 65-game rule disqualify any stars in the MVP, individual awards races?

Injuries early in the season to some of the game's biggest stars have complicated the pathway for individual awards.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander(12 games missed) appears to be safe, with the ability to miss up to five games while maintaining eligibility. Gilgeous-Alexander has been consistent and appears to be the odds-on favorite to win his second-consecutive MVP.

Nikola Jokić(16) can miss only one more game, and, as the only players averaging a triple-double, he has a very compelling case for MVP.

Victor Wembanyama(15) can sit out no more than two of San Antonio's remaining games. The overwhelming favorite for Defensive Player of the Year, Wembanyama has an outside shot at MVP consideration.

In the East, the race to avoid the play-in will be tight

After Monday night's games, just 1½ games separates the No. 9 seed in the East from the No. 5 seed. And, since the top six teams in the conference claim automatic playoff bids, the battle to stay out of the play-in picture should intensify as the season wears on.

Teams headed in the right direction include theOrlando Magic(38-29; winners of seven of their last eight),Miami Heat(38-30; winners of 10 of their last 13) and theAtlanta Hawks(37-31; winners of 10 consecutive). Teams headed in the wrong direction include theToronto Raptors(38-29; losers of six of their last 10) and thePhiladelphia 76ers(37-31; losers of nine of their last 16). Injuries toTyrese MaxeyandJoel Embiidobviously don't help Philadelphia, either.

REWIND:Trump, Kobe and an elevator fight: Ex-NBA star responds to legendary tale

Who will tank hardest? And who will win the sweepstakes for the No. 1 pick?

Thepicture at the bottom of the standingslooks altogether different. It has become clear, whether through shutting players down or through unconventional player rotations, that certain teams are doing all they can to improve their positioning in the2026 NBA Draft. This is particularly magnified for teams whose picks carry protections, like theIndiana Pacers.

Indiana's first-round selection is Top-4 and 10-30 protected, which means that if the lottery places the Pacers (15-53; worst record in NBA) in any slot No. 5 through 9, that pick will convey to theLos Angeles Clippers. The same goes for the Top 8 protected pick belonging to theWashington Wizards(16-51; second-worst record in NBA).

Teams have become creative with injury reporting and are relying on maintenance surgeries to shut players down. With a very deep draft class that has elite star talent at the top, look for the tanking to become even more pronounced.

Will the NBA and its officials ease up on enforcement of foul baiting calls?

FromCelticsstarJaylen Brown calling out players who intentionally seek contactto bait officials into making calls, to scores of fans complaining about the tactic on social media, will the NBA listen to appeals to change the way it officiates games?

Interestingly, the average number of personal fouls per game this season (19.9) is well off of the record mark for the modern era (26.2, in 1981-82), though it is a modest increase from last year's total (18.6). Yet, somehow, the problem feels as worse as it has ever been.

Physicality and intensity always ramp up late in the regular season and postseason, and the NBA needs to determine whether its current strategy is viable. Certain players – Gilgeous-Alexander,Jalen Brunson, Jokić,Luka Dončićamong them – resort to the maneuver when faced with tight defense.

Frankly speaking, it's a copout. Granted, they typically are taking advantage of overzealous defenders, but it also leads to a disjointed and often frustrating viewing experience.

The league typically doesn't like to make such drastic corrections in the middle of a season, so this may be an issue it looks at in the offseason. But the viewing experience would go a long way if officials stopped falling for the bait. Once the NBA stops rewarding players, eventually they will cease trying.

The Duchess of Sussex, 44, shared new videos on her personal Instagram page on Monday, March 16, including a clip of her 4-year-old daughter with a pair of chickens.

In a post on her Instagram Stories, Meghan shows two chickens and giggles before Lili appears in the frame, reaching down to pet one of the animals. Tena, who once worked with Vixen, a production company, alleged that she maintained an on-and-off romantic connection withChalametbetween 2020 and 2023.

Speaking withThe Daily Mail, she claimed she was surprised when she first saw reports linking theactorto Jenner.

"I see these things about him datingKylie Jenner, and I was very confused about that," she said.

"At first, I thought it was fake news, and then I was like, maybe it's a PR thing. But now it looks like maybe they are together. I don't know… It doesn't add up."

According to Tena, her and Chalamet's connection began during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic after she sent the actor a message on Instagram.

She said she first discovered Chalamet after watching him in the Netflix film,The King.

"I thought, 'Oh, who's this actor?' because I'd never seen him before, so I looked him up onInstagram," she recalled.

"I was like, 'Oh, this guy is handsome."

Her first message, which was a black heart emoji, reportedly went unanswered. Months later, she tried again by responding to another Instagram Story with a drooling emoji.

This time, she alleged the actor reacted to the message.

About a month later, she explained that Chalamet sent her a direct message on May 16, 2020, eventually leading them to exchange phone numbers.

Tena further noted that the pair met in person shortly afterward at a beachfront property in Santa Monica, where Chalamet was staying during the pandemic.

She claimed she asked him to come outside when she got out of the Uber, admitting their first meeting felt "surreal."

"With Timothée we just clicked," she said. "We were both attracted to each other. It also turned into a friendship."

She also claimed the actor showed interest in her personal life, wanting to meet herdaughter.

"He is a gentleman," she added. "He's genuine. He's funny… The friendship kept us going so long… Our personalities are similar."

Eventually, their relationship became moreemotionallyserious for her. During a meeting in New York City in June 2022, she said she told the actor about her feelings.

"I had finally expressed how I felt, and I let him know that I had feelings for him, and he did too. We both did."

"I was in love with Timothée, yeah," she continued. "I didn't say those exact words to him. I had said, 'I have feelings for you,' and pretty much expressed that I want to continue. I let him know that I wanted it to be more consistent… I wanted it to be where we made more time for one another. New York kind of sealed that for me."

Little did she know that the meeting would become the last time she saw him in person.

Following their last meeting, she sent Chalamet a belatedbirthdaymessage on January 5, 2023, which was acknowledged by him with a heart reaction.

By April 2023, sources toldTMZthat the pair were "hanging out," and Jenner's Range Rover was photographed outside Chalamet's Beverly Hills home.

Responding to questions from fans on TikTok, she posted screenshots of what she said were conversations with Chalamet from his official Instagram account.

The images were later shared on X, where a post discussing the alleged relationship accumulated over 3.3 million views at the time.

Social media users quickly speculated that the timeline suggested the actor had cheated on Jenner.

However, Tena herself denied that interpretation, adding. "He got into a 'relationship,' and I'm now with someone, so we just drifted apart."

Although she described the whole revelation as "disrespectful," she admitted she still thinks about the relationship.

"I miss him," she said. "I do miss him a lot because I haven't seen him in a couple of years."

"I never thought of him, and I would stop talking because we had that friendship also. He's changed. I know he's changed. Hollywood changes people," she concluded.

"Have some self respect," wrote one netizen
