Key Points

  • Dick revealed on the Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast that his heart stopped during the ordeal, that he was "not breathing," and a CAT scan showed he has "5 to 7 holes" in his brain.

  • The comedian was eventually admitted to rehab after video of the apparent overdose that troubled fans showed him slumped over and unresponsive on a Los Angeles sidewalk.

The comedian andNewsRadiostar has not spoken much about the incident, which was captured on video originally published byTMZ. That video showed Dick slumped over and unresponsive in the Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles on Dec. 9 with his glasses fallen from his face, while others at the scene called an ambulance and attempted to help him gain consciousness.

Dick appeared on theHowie Mandel Does Stuffpodcast on Tuesday, where Mandel pressed him for more details on what happened, how it happened, and what his health looks like now.

"You were dead. Were you dead?" theAmerica's Got Talentjudge asked. "Yeah," Dick responded, but before he could elaborate, Mandel wanted to know more.

"Did your heart stop, like legitimately, clinically dead?" Mandel insisted. Dick responded that his heart did stop, saying he went "purple" and was "not breathing."

"As everyone knows, Andy has been battling his addictions for years.  There was an incident this past December, but I am happy to report that Andy is healthy, sober and doing great!" a representative for Dick toldEntertainment Weeklyon Tuesday.

On the podcast, Dick said he has no memory of the experience.

"There were no bright lights — I wish, I'd go back," he joked. His first recollection of the day came when he was "waking up in the ambulance."

He explained that the man who can be seen in the video helping him sit up and calling emergency services is Adam Carbone, the director of a documentary chronicling his rocky journey to sobriety. Though Dick said he didn't know who gave him the drug that caused such an intense reaction, nor does he know what the drug is, Carbone, who also joined Dick in Mandel's studio, explained that "the guy who he got the drug from had NARCAN."

NARCAN is an over-the-counter nasal spray designed to counteract the onset of an opioid overdose.

Dick now resides in a sober living community, he revealed, where you're "not allowed to" use substances, and where "they drug test you."

Still, Mandel asked him if he was high because he seemed "out of it a little." Dick explained that both his energy levels and his memory have been impacted by years of substance use: "They did a CAT scan thing, or whatever they call it in your brain, and I have all these — there's about five to seven holes."

In his statement toEntertainment Weekly, Dick's representative clarified, "The issue with his brain is from the 2019 attack that almost killed Andy when an unprovoked attacker cold cocked Andy while he was outside of the club he and Paris Dylan had just performed.  We are assured that his brain will heal."

A separate representative for Dick used the same language to describe the incident to NBC New Orleans affiliateKPLC 7in 2019, that Dick was standing in front of French Quarter club One Eyed Jack's after a show "when the guy cold cocked him while he was talking to someone... Andy's head fell into the wall, then fell into the motorcycle, then cracked on the cement."

Footagecapturing the incident was eventually released and a suspect was apprehended, but thecase was eventually dropped.

When repeatedly pushed to answer why he turns to substances like drugs and alcohol, Dick said, "Boredom. I get bored easily, and and it sounds dumb and it's just an excuse... But it's a problem."

A representative for Dicktold PEOPLEin late January that the comedian was "out of rehab," "sober," and has a lot to look forward to. Dick's daughter Meg with ex Lena Sved is pregnant, which means he's expecting his first grandchild.

Two senior Communist Party officials absent from top Chinese political event

Two senior Communist Party officials absent from top Chinese political event

BEIJING, March 4 (Reuters) - Two senior Chinese officials were absent on Wednesday from the ranks of China's highest tier of power at the opening of the country's two largest political events of the year, with ‌top Communist Party cadres ensnared in a wave of purges.

Reuters

Zhang Youxia, China's highest-ranking general, was not among the ‌party's 23-member Politburo at the opening of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), according to a Reuters witness. Neither was Ma Xingrui, formerly the party's top official in the western Chinese region of Xinjiang.

Thousands of delegates have arrived in Beijing this week for the annual meetings of the CPPCC and the National People's Congress, where officials will unveil this year's economic targets and map out key policy goals for the next five years.

Zhang, who is also a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), was put under investigation in January. ‌Ma has not been in the public eye since late October.

Also in October, He Weidong, who was the co-vice chair of China's military leadership body with Zhang, was expelled from the Communist Party for corruption, reducing the 24-member Politburo to 23.

The downfalls of Zhang and He have cut China's CMC to two members - President Xi Jinping, the chairman, and newly promoted Vice Chairman Zhang Shengmin.

Their downfalls point to Xi's willingness to remove senior political figures - including sitting Politburo members - even if they create temporary uncertainty about governance.

Beijing's intensified anti-graft drive in recent years has also touched sectors linked to the military, including aerospace. Zhou Xinmin, the ‌former head of state-owned conglomerate Aviation Industry Corp of China, was among three lawmakers ousted from Parliament last month. No explanation was provided.

The purges of sitting Politburo members are a reminder of similar incidents over 10 years ago when Xi was first coming to power.

Bo Xilai, the former Chongqing party chief who fell from grace following a major political scandal involving his wife, was jailed for life in 2013 for corruption and abuse of power.

In the years that followed, other serving Politburo members ‌also fell from power, including Zhou Yongkang, a former security chief, and Sun Zhengcai, also a former Chongqing party chief.

DISAPPEARANCE

Ma Xingrui was removed from his position as Xinjiang party chief in July "to be appointed to another position," according to an official announcement. It is not clear if he was ‌ever transferred to a new role.

His most recent known public appearance was at the Communist Party Central Committee's Fourth Plenum in late October. Since then, Ma has been absent from the state broadcaster's footage of several key events, including a Politburo study session in November and the annual Central Economic Work Conference in December.

Before entering regional politics in southern ‌China's Guangdong province and later in Xinjiang, he served as the director of the China National Space Administration and was vice minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Evan Mobley also had 18 points and Dennis Schroder 15 for the Cavs, who split their four regular-season games with Detroit.

Mitchell sat out his fourth straight game with a nagging groin strain. Coach Kenny Atkinson said the seven-time All-Star is "trending better" but doesn't know when he'll be back to build chemistry for the postseason with Harden, who was acquired at the trade deadline.

Jalen Duren added 24 points and 14 rebounds and Tobias Harris scored 19 points — all after halftime — for the Pistons, who had their road winning streak stopped at six games. Cade Cunningham dished out 14 assists but scored only 10 on 4-of-16 shooting for Detroit.

The Pistons cut an 11-point deficit to one in the fourth, but Sam Merrill hit a big 3-pointer to help the Cavs hang on.

While it was the last meeting between Detroit and Cleveland before the playoffs, their rivalry has been reborn with both teams in Eastern Conference title contention.

Following the Cavs' overtime road loss last week, an unnamed Cleveland player chirped the Pistons "are not in our class."

Detroit coach J.B. Bickerstaff, who was fired by the Cavs in 2024, dismissed the bravado before Tuesday's game.

"If you mean it," he said, "you don't say it anonymously."

Cleveland center Jarrett Allen, who has been having one of the best stretches of his career, suffered a knee injury in the third quarter and didn't return. When asked about his condition on his way out of Rocket Arena, Allen said: "I'll be all right."

Detroit's Isaiah Stewart returned from a seven-game league suspension and played 22 minutes.
