"Just downloading a friendship app and seeing how many people are also looking to connect can be surprisingly comforting."</p>

<p>Before you start doubting the effectiveness of an app to find friends, let me just stop your almost-spiral. "Friendships are a vital part of emotional and mental well-being, and can even impact your physical health," explains Blum. "But as we get older, those built-in opportunities start to fade. Friendships can feel harder to maintain or even awkward to build from scratch, so people often let them slide." But that need for a support system and someone to grab dinner with on a casual Thursday? Yeah, that never goes away.</p>

<p>That's why friendship apps are so clutch IRL—Blum says using them can def make the whole process easier. You already know everyone there is open to making new connections, and not only can you narrow down the pool of people based on things like interests, but you can also find folks who live near you, so you don't have to schlep across town for a quick hang.</p>

<p>UCLA is the latest major institution of higher learning to see promised research funding snatched away by the Trump administration, the university's leader said in an open letter to students and faculty Thursday.</p>

<p>"This is not only a loss to the researchers who rely on critical grants," wrote Chancellor Julio Frenk. "It is a loss for Americans across the nation whose work, health, and future depend on the groundbreaking work we do."</p>

<p>Grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health are included in the suspensions, Frenk said, but did not provide an amount of how much funding is in peril. The Los Angeles Times reported that roughly $200 million in grants awarded to UCLA are being suspended, citing a partial list of suspended grants provided to them by a source.</p>

<p>A spokesperson for the National Science Foundation declined to provide specific figures, saying grant awards are being suspended "because they are not in alignment with current NSF priorities and/or programmatic goals."</p>

<p>"We will not fund institutions that promote antisemitism," said a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services, which includes the National Institutes of Health. "We will use every tool we have to ensure institutions follow the law."</p>

<p>The Trump administration has repeatedly cited antisemitism – especially in the context of contentious pro-Gaza protests on campuses – as a reason to deny promised funds to universities, including Harvard and Columbia. Harvard is fighting the funding decisions in court, while Columbia agreed to a settlement with the government that restored its grants.</p>

<p>The funding cut comes days after the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division announced it found UCLA in violation of federal law by "acting with deliberate indifference in creating a hostile educational environment for Jewish and Israeli students."</p>

<p>While the formal notice to UCLA said the federal government "now seeks to enter into a voluntary resolution agreement," Attorney General Pam Bondi sounded less conciliatory.</p>

<p>"DOJ will force UCLA to pay a heavy price for putting Jewish Americans at risk and continue our ongoing investigations into other campuses in the UC system," Bondi said in a statement.</p>

<p>It is not just the Trump administration that has tangled with UCLA over charges of antisemitism. A group of Jewish students filed suit against the university last June, saying the school allowed discrimination against Jews to flourish following Israel's military operation in Gaza in response to the October 7 attacks.</p>

<p>The lawsuit said UCLA leaders waited days before responding to a group of pro-Palestinian protesters that refused to allow students to enter campus unless they agreed to "a statement pledging their allegiance to the activists' views."</p>

<p>UCLA settled the lawsuit earlier this week for $6.45 million, with more than $2 million of the total going to designated "organizations that combat antisemitism and support the UCLA Jewish community."</p>

<p>UCLA also agreed it is prohibited from "knowingly allowing or facilitating the exclusion of Jewish students, faculty, and/or staff" from university programs and activities.</p>

<p>SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — U.S. officials announced Friday they are aware of "reported bribery attempts" aimed at destabilizing Haiti, raising concerns that the troubled country could sink further into crisis.</p>

<p>The announcements were made on X by the U.S. Embassy in Haiti and the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs.</p>

<p>Officials did not provide details except to say that they commended members of Haiti's transitional presidential council "for their rejection of corruption" and for collaborating with the current prime minister to "work together" to stabilize the country.</p>

<p>"We will hold accountable anyone who attempts to undermine this collaboration," the embassy wrote on X.</p>

<p>The announcement comes as infighting threatens the stability of the council while gangs that control up to 90% of Haiti's capital continue to seize more territory in Port-au-Prince and in Haiti's central region.</p>

<p>The council's voting members did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Neither did the U.S. Department of State nor the office of Haiti's prime minister.</p>

<p>Some people on social media mocked the announcement as they accused some council members of being corrupt.</p>

<p>In October last year, Haiti's anti-corruption unit accused three council members of bribery and corruption involving the government-owned National Bank of Credit. No one has been charged, and the council members remain in their positions.</p>

<p>Haiti's political stability has been fragile ever since a powerful gang federation known as "Viv Ansanm" launched attacks early last year on critical government infrastructure including police stations and the country's main international airport, forcing it to close for nearly three months.</p>

<p>The attacks prevented then-Prime Minister Ariel Henry from returning to Haiti. He eventually resigned, unable to enter his homeland following an official visit to Kenya to talk about a U.N.-backed mission that police from the eastern African country are currently leading to try and quash gang violence.</p>

<p>The council is under pressure to hold general elections by February 2026, with the previous ones held nearly a decade ago. No date has been set yet.</p>

<p>The council was created in April 2024 as the international community scrambled to meet with Haitian officials to rebuild the country's government after Henry resigned. Political stability remains fragile, with three prime ministers having been appointed in the past year.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, gang violence continues to surge in the aftermath of the July 2021 killing of President Jovenel Moïse.</p>

<p>In a report released Friday, the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti noted that at least 1,520 people were killed and more than 600 injured from April to the end of June. Nearly 80% of those incidents happened in Port-au-Prince, with nearly 20% reported in Haiti's central region.</p>

<p>More than 60% of the killings and injuries occurred during operations by security forces against gangs, with another 12% blamed on self-defense groups.</p>

<p>The report noted that Johnson André, best known as "Izo" and considered Haiti's most powerful gang leader, was injured in drone strikes earlier this year, as was gang leader Renel Destina, who goes by "Ti Lapli" and leads the Grand Ravine gang.</p>

<p>From April to June, more than 400 homes and other buildings including schools and health centers "were ransacked, burned or destroyed by gangs," the report stated.</p>

<p>Gang violence also has displaced more than 1.3 million people in recent years.</p>

<p>A federal judge on Friday blocked the Trump administration's cancelation of US National Institutes of Health grants that research on LGBTQ+ related health issues.</p>

<p>Ruling from the bench, US District Judge Lydia Griggsby, an appointee of former President Joe Biden, said she would issue a preliminary injunction against NIH directives to terminate grants for LGBTQ+ health research, describing such directives as designed to "focus and target LGBTQ+ members."</p>

<p>"It's clear that why the funding is being terminated and why the grants will not move forward is because they relate to that community," Griggsby said.</p>

<p>The lawsuit, filed in May by the American Association of Physicians for Human Rights, against the NIH and Department of Health and Human Services alleges that in targeting only certain, predominantly LGBTQ+-related research projects for funding cuts, the NIH engaged in unlawful discrimination.</p>

<p>In determining what grants to cut, Physicians for Human Rights attorney Omar Gonzalez-Pagan argued on Friday, NIH employees "literally do a search term of projects, and they literally look for words" associated with LGBTQ+ related issues – including transgender, nonbinary, and sexuality.</p>

<p>The reason the government is targeting transgender research projects "is because they believe transgender people do not exist," Omar Gonzalez-Pagan said.</p>

<p>"We need to take the government at its word," he continued. "That this a president of the United States who has spoken so denigratingly of the people that he governs"</p>

<p>Assistant US Attorney Michael Wilson argued that the court lacked jurisdiction and would become "involved in what should be a political process."</p>

<p>This is not the first time a district court has thwarted the NIH's attempts to cancel grants funding identity-related research.</p>

<p>In a separate legal challenge to the case, a district court judge in Massachusetts ruled in June that the gutting of NIH grants in diversity-related fields is illegal, though that ruling addressed only a fraction of the hundreds of grants actually terminated.</p>

<p>District Judge William Young, an appointee of former President Ronald Reagan, said it is "palpably clear" that "racial discrimination and discrimination against America's LGBTQ community" was behind the NIH's grant termination plans.</p>

<p>Griggsby said she would issue a written ruling on the matter in the coming weeks.</p>

<p>FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Lionel Messi and Inter Miami won their first match in the 2025 Leagues Cup but find themselves looking up at five other clubs in the tournament standings before their second match of the group stage.</p>

<p>Inter Miami needs Messi to find his groove again if they're going to advance in the tournament.</p>

<p>The 2025 Leagues Cup features a new format: While the matches are between Major League Soccer teams and LIGA MX clubs from Mexico, the top four clubs from each league will advance to the knockout stage.</p>

<p>Earning three points for a win isn't enough in this year's edition. Goal differential is the next tiebreaker in the table, placing a greater emphasis on scoring to advance to the quarterfinals.</p>

<p>"You look at the table, and you've won and you're in sixth place because of the goal difference. There are still two games to play, a lot can happen," Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said a day before the club's match against Necaxa at Chase Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 2.</p>

<p>Messi delivered assists on goals scored by Telasco Segovia and Marcelo Weigandt in Inter Miami's 2-1 win against Atlas on July 30, but complained about feeling fatigued in his first match after having last week off.</p>

<p>Messi was suspended for skipping the MLS All-Star Game on July 23, causing him to serve a one-game suspension on July 26. Before the layoff, Messi scored two goals in four of five matches following the FIFA Club World Cup.</p>

<p>"Even if [the rest] seems better, for me it's worse because I need to compete. I feel good physically the more matches I play and get into rhythm," Messi told Apple TV. "The other day they didn't let me compete, and I felt it in the first half, but the important thing is that we won."</p>

<p>Mascherano expects Messi to find his form again, especially with Inter Miami having three of its next four matches at home. The only away match is against in-state rival Orlando City on Aug. 10.</p>

<p>"Unless Leo feels tired and doesn't say anything, the idea is that if he feels good, he'll always play," Mascherano said of Messi.</p>

<p>Inter Miami needs its biggest star to keep pace with the MLS clubs in Leagues Cup.</p>

<p>The Seattle Sounders thrashed reigning Concacaf Champions Cup winners Cruz Azul 7-0, while L.A. Galaxy beat Tijuana 5-2 on July 31. The Portland Timbers toppled Atlético de San Luis 4-0, and Minnesota United beat Querétaro 4-1 on July 30.</p>

<p>Seattle, Portland, the Galaxy and Minnesota are the top four clubs in the MLS side of the Leagues Cup table, followed by FC Cincinnati (which beat Monterrey 3-2 on July 31), Inter Miami, the Colorado Rapids and New York Red Bulls. Those eight MLS clubs won their first Leagues Cup match.</p>

<p>The top four on the LIGA MX side are Tigres UANL, FC Juarez, Puebla and Necaxa after the first round of matches. After facing Necaxa, Inter Miami will host Tigres UANL on Wednesday, Aug. 6 in their last match of the group stage.</p>

<p>"What keeps you going is trying to play well, get a good result, and then we'll see what happens," Mascherano said. "But I don't think there's much point in feeling sorry for yourself or focusing too much on other results."</p>

<p>Necaxa is led by new coach Fernando Gago, barely two months into the job. They beat Atlanta United 3-1 in their Leagues Cup opener on July 30.</p>

<p>Gago was a starter alongside Messi and Mascherano in Argentina's 1-0 win in the Olympic men's soccer final in 2008, and came off the bench in their loss to Germany in the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup final.</p>

<p>"Fernando is a friend from soccer – someone I had the privilege of sharing many years with on the national team, but he's also someone I care about, someone I've shared moments with outside of soccer as well," Mascherano said of Gago. "It's always special to face people you know, people you've shared so many good times with. And in the end, when the ball starts rolling, I'll try to do everything I can to compete in the best way possible and win so we can still hope to qualify."</p>
