The Rolling Stones launch their new studio album "Foreign Tongues", in New York

NEW YORK, May 5 (Reuters) - The three surviving members of the Rolling Stones attended a red-carpet event in Brooklyn on Tuesday to celebrate the launch of the band's 25th studio album, "Foreign Tongues," a follow-up to their Grammy-winning 2023 ‌release.

The 14-track collection will make its debut on July 10 as Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood mark the 64th anniversary ‌of the blues and R&B-rooted English rock band that became one of the world's most successful, influential and enduring pop music acts.

The album cover, created by painter Nathaniel Mary Quinn, features ​a colorful, almost grotesque, three-in-one composite likeness of Jagger, Richards and Wood, their exaggerated, jumbled facial features assembled into a single disfigured portrait.

At an afternoon launch party held at the Weylin, a landmark special-events venue in New York City's Brooklyn borough, the three Stones walked a red carpet, posed for pictures and submitted to an interview session with comedian and talk show host Conan O'Brien.

The forthcoming arrival of "Foreign Tongues," a title invoking the Stones' distinctive lips-and-tongue logo, was preceded by Tuesday's ‌digital release of the album's lead single, "In the Stars," ⁠along with the album's opening track "Rough and Twisted."

"In the Stars" is due for physical distribution on May 15.

Fans got a sneak peek of "Rough and Twisted" when it was given a limited vinyl-only release in April as a single credited to ⁠the Cockroaches, an old pseudonym for the Stones, to stoke buzz about the album as a whole.

'RAUCOUS BLUES BELTER'

Neil McCormick, chief music critic for the Telegraph, called "Rough and Twisted" a "stomping, raucous, frayed and tattered blues belter" that would not sound out of place on the band's seminal 1972 album "Exile on Main Street."

"Foreign Tongues" marks the Stones' ​second ​studio album since the 2021 death of drummer Charlie Watts and 25th set of ​new music since the band was founded in 1962 with ‌a lineup that included Jagger as vocalist, Richards on guitar, and multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones, who died in 1969.

Watts and bassist Bill Wyman joined early on to round out the first stable roster of players billed as the Stones. Wood joined the group in the 1970s to replace then-departing rhythm guitarist Mick Taylor, and Wyman quit the band in the early 1990s.

The remaining core trio of Jagger, Richards and Wood reunited for 2023's "Hackney Diamonds," then the first album of original music from the Stones in 18 years and a collection that won the Grammy Award for best rock album. It was also noteworthy for ‌containing some of the last studio work recorded by Watts, as well as the Stones' ​first studio contributions from drummer Steve Jordan.

Jordan and bassist Darryl Jones comprise the rhythm section ​on "Foreign Tongues," which also features a "special appearance" from Watts, according to ​the band's promotional materials.

Other guest artists on the latest album include Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood, Robert Smith of The Cure, ‌and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Speaking at ​Tuesday's event, Jagger said the album's producer, ​Andrew Watt, "was trying to get me together with Paul (McCartney) to write something, but we never actually did." McCartney also played on "Hackney Diamonds," with Watt overseeing that project as well.

Despite the considerable rock-star mileage Jagger, 82, Richards, 82, and Wood, 78, have racked up, the Stones' 25th ​studio release may not be the band's swan song.

British ‌daily The Times' chief rock and pop critic, Will Hodgkinson, reported in April that the band had amassed a stockpile of at ​least 10 more unused songs from their latest sessions as material for another album.

Perhaps it is the excitement for No. 3 overall pick Jeremiyah Love, who many believe is the most talented player in the draft. Perhaps it says more about the three teams behind them.

The running back room is improved with the addition of Love and free agent signing Tyler Allgeier.

But they are still a bad roster right now. After free agency and the draft, running back might be the only position that has improved, which isn't promising after a three-win season.

At least they can't get much worse than they are.

Earlier on May 4, both legal teams announced the lawsuit settlement.Lively’slawyers, Michael Gottlieb and Esra Hudson, joined Wayfarer Studios’ lawyers in the statement. Those lawyers were Bryan Freedman and Ellyn Garofalo. The case began in December 2024 and was set for trial on May 18. The statement called the movie “It Ends With Us” a “source of pride.” It said “raising awareness” for survivors remained “a goal that we stand behind.” It also said Lively’s concerns “deserved to be heard.” The statement added, “We remain firmly committed to workplaces free of improprieties and unproductive environments.” It hoped for “closure” and “peace.”

Meanwhile, the appearance marked Lively’s first Met Gala since 2022. That year, she co-chaired with her husband,Ryan Reynolds, for “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.” She wore another Atelier Versace gown, with a train revealed on the steps. This time, her return came hours after settlement news, giving the carpet moment added legal context. The “Gossip Girl” alum kept focus on the event and her public return.

A former state champion weightlifter is guiding Southwest Florida Christian Academy to an unexpected debut season in the sport.

Coached by Matt Davidson, the King’s are headed to compete at the Class 1A state meet in Lakeland on Friday after racking up milestones in the program’s inaugural season.

“It was the kids and Matt really buying into all of it is what made it successful,” SFCA athletic director Bill Moore said.

SFCA hosted the Class 1A-District 14 meet in early April and came out on top in both Traditional and Olympic categories.

Eighth grader Jack Wooley won a district title in the Olympic category in the 139-pound weight class and senior Noah Zuchengo won in Traditional in the 183-pound weight class.

Lifting in the lightest weight class at 119 pounds, junior Johnny Scott won district titles in both categories.

The team qualified 18 lifters for regionals, where they won the title in Olympic and came in second in Traditional. Scott again won both categories and was the meet’s top individual lifter in Traditional.

Zuchengo was a regional runner up in both categories, and senior Connor Watermeier came in second in Olympic in the 199-pound weight class.

At states, Scott will have the chance to become the King’s first individual state champion in any sport.

“He was, I would say, the predominant reason that we pushed so hard to get the sport going,” Davidson said.

Building a championship weightlifting program at SFCA

Davidson brought plenty of experience as a coach and an athlete himself. He previously coached football and weightlifting at LaBelle High School.

The 2006 LaBelle graduate is the football team’s all-time leading rusher and went on to play at Navy and Weber International.

In 2006, he also became the Cowboys’ first state champion in weightlifting.

“It was a traditional sport only,” Davidson said. “It’s kind of a different sport now with having the snatch and Olympic stuff involved.”

An assistant coach on the football team, Davidson was already playing a role in training athletes at SFCA.

“The kids here at our school love Matt, so he came to me and said, ‘What do you think about putting a team together?’ and kind of had a blueprint for already and I was like, ‘Man it sounds great,’” Moore said.

They knew Scott, whowent viral in the fall for a video of his bench press,would have enormous potential in the sport.

“He was just a weight room junkie, so this was kind of giving him an opportunity to compete,” Moore said.

It wasn’t difficult to get the resources together to start the team.

“It’s a low barrier of entry as far as getting into the sport – just got to gather up some singlets and schedule some meets,” Davidson said. “We already had the weight room.”

However, whether students would participate was the biggest question.

SFCA hosted a meet early in the season, which paved the way for the team to gain numbers.

“We built some interest around the sport,” Davidson said. “Then it just kind of kept growing from there, each and every time.”

It helped that the SFCA athletes already had a solid foundation for the sport.

“The snatch and clean and jerk were movements we did within the weight training program,” Davison said. “Our strength coach, Brandon Davis, has been doing with him with him for years, so they were good at the more technical lifts, and then we just kind of had to really work on their bench presses.”

Scott’s top lifts of the season include benching 240 pounds and a 190-pound clean-and-jerk.

Heading into states, he has the top recorded bench press in Class 1A.

“For his size, he’s a powerhouse,” Davidson said. “He’s had to work a little harder for the technique of the Olympic movements, but he’s just extremely strong. He’s kind of unorthodox in some of his technique and form with his movements, but he’s able to do it just with his raw power.”

One last meet in SFCA weightlifting's debut season

Davidson explained that, in starting this program, he wanted to treat it like a real sport and not like a hangout where athletes come and lift.

“We actually had practice every afternoon,” he said. “We got the guys together. We had a little bit of strategy of how we approached the lifts and trying to put our best total together each and every meet and understanding you’re not necessarily going to hit your max, your best lift, every single time but just paying attention to the guys ahead of you and making sure you’re putting yourself in a good position to give the team points.”

Davidson’s leadership paid dividends in establishing the sport quickly at SFCA.

“With his experience – he’s been coaching for a while now, and he really is just a magnet to kids,” Moore said. “I’ve had a couple of my own sons personally play for him and they love him. He’s just an invaluable resource.”

Having earned several significant achievements in their first season, the King’s will have one more chance to add to list at the Class 1A state meet on May 8.

“It just takes that bit of early success to get kids to buy in and get excited for what they can potentially do and then you win a district championship and then everyone knew that someone like Johnny was going to do really, really well at regionals,” Moore said. “It’s just been neat to see all that evolve.”

MELBOURNE, May 4 (Reuters) - Australia and Japan have beefed up their cooperation around critical minerals amid a state visit by Japan's prime ‌minister, with the countries providing A$1.67 billion ($1.20 billion) in support for ‌the sector and flagging more to come.

Australia and Japan will focus on strategic projects to address ​the most urgent supply chain vulnerabilities in mining, refining and manufacturing in the two countries, the Australian government said in a statement.

Australia plans to provide up to A$1.3 billion, while the government of Japan has provided approximately A$370 million ‌in investments and grants, and ⁠plans to provide further investments and grants as projects develop, the statement said.

The projects build on the long-time backing by ⁠Sojitz and Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) for Australia's Lynas Corp, the world's largest producer of rare earths outside China.

Projects that may be in line ​for government ​funding include:

• Alcoa, with Sojitz and ​the Japanese government, is working to ‌develop gallium recovery at one of its operating alumina refineries in Western Australia, for use in semiconductors, LEDs, and solar cells.

• Magnium Australia, in Western Australia, plans to produce high purity magnesium used in the automotive and aerospace sectors

• Tivan's Speewah Fluorite project in Western Australia is set to produce acid‑grade ‌fluorite, a key raw material for hydrofluoric ​acid used in semiconductors, electric vehicles, and other ​advanced applications

• The Copi Critical ​Minerals Project in New South Wales is a mineral sands ‌project looking to supply critical minerals ​and rare earth ​elements. The project is owned by RZ Resources, with participation from JX Advanced Metals and Marubeni.

• Ardea Resources' Kalgoorlie Nickel project, Goongarrie, is one ​of the largest nickel ‌cobalt resources in Australia. It is being developed as a joint ​venture with Sumitomo Metal Mining and Mitsubishi.

Spirit Airlines shuts down after failing to secure government bailout 03:06

TheSpirit Airlines shutdownwill ripple through commercial aviation, likely raising higher fares as the budget carrier exits the market, industry experts said.

"Any time you have a reduction in capacity and demand increases, airfares have nowhere to go but up. And that doesn't count the fares that are already rising because of the spike in fuel prices," CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg told CBS News Boston.

Spirit announced early Saturday that it had "started an orderly wind-down of operations, effective immediately," after efforts to obtain a $500 million federal bailout stalled. All Spirit flights have been canceled.

Losing Spirit, known for its ultra-low fares, will likely mean costlier tickets on other airlines. A CBS News analysis of Cirium data, a provider of aviation analytics, found average fares jumped 23%, or roughly $60, for a round-trip flight when Spirit exited a route. Overall passenger volume also fell 20% after the carrier left a market.

Spirit's failure could boost fares at a time when ticket prices are already elevated due tohigher jet fuel costsfrom theIran war.

What if I have a ticket for a future Spirit flight?

Customers with tickets for future Spirit flights are entitled to full refunds if the airline goes out of business.

Spirit on Saturday said it would automatically process refunds for any flight that was purchased through the airline with a credit or debit card. The airline hasset up a websiteto answer questions regarding its shutdown.

"If you're holding a Spirit ticket for a flight that hasn't happened yet, you'll get that back from your credit card company under federal credit laws," Greenberg said.

Still, travelers may encounter obstacles obtaining their refunds.

"Watch what happens very closely, and if the airline ceases operation, call the credit card you used to buy the ticket and dispute the charge," Eric Rosen, director of travel content at The Points Guy, told CBS News. "The result is a non-delivery of service, which is grounds for disputing a charge."

Spirit customers who paid cash or used airline loyalty points could be out of luck, Rosen said, noting that those points cannot be transferred to other airlines' loyalty programs.

In Saturday's announcement, Spirit said that "compensation for guests who booked flights" using a voucher, credit or free Spirit points "will be determined at a later date through the bankruptcy process."

Still, Julian Kheel, founder of Points Path, advises against canceling a ticket for an upcoming Spirit flight.

"Canceling your ticket now without a promise of a refund will eliminate all protections. Instead, hang on to your ticket and file a chargeback with your bank," he said.

Other airlines to the rescue?

An abrupt shutdown means some travelers will have to turn to other airlines for a flight home. Many carriers announced special short-term offers to help Spirit passengers.

"To access these special prices, individuals will need to provide at a minimum a Spirit flight confirmation number and proof of payment," the U.S. Department of Transportation said in a statement.

Deltasaid it will offer "reduced rescue fares in impacted markets to support those with near-term travel needs."

United Airlines said it will cap prices on one-way fares for travelers who have Spirit tickets over the next two weeks for most cities where Spirit flew, mostly capped at $199, with longer flights up to $299. More information atUnited.com/specialfares.

United said Saturday evening that in the span of 12 hours, it had rebooked about 14,000 Spirit flyers onto United flights.

American Airlines said in a statement to CBS News, "we immediately implemented fare caps on Main Cabin tickets for Spirit routes where we also offer nonstop service and will continue to support as many customers as possible." Passengers can through the American Airlines app or onaa.com.

Southwest Airlines said special fares for Spirit travelers will be available at Southwest ticket counters at their departure airport for eligible routes through 11:59 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, May 6.

JetBlue is offering $99 rescue fares "to assist stranded travelers with immediate travel planned," available for 72 hours, and said it will cap fares to provide more affordable rebooking options. Affected customers can call1-800-JETBLUEfor information.

The discount carrierFrontierposted a statement saying it is ready to assist affected travelers, and the Department of Transportation said Allegiant, Avelo and Breeze have also agreed to assist.

Fare caps would limit prices but could still force Spirit customers to pay more than they expected.

"They said they'll offer rescue fares to Spirit passengers, but it's unclear if they'll be offered on every route Spirit served," industry analyst Henry Harteveldt, founder of Atmosphere Research Group, told CBS News.

Harteveldt urged customers to keep copies of their Spirit itineraries in case another airline requires them.

"These rescue fares may be less expensive than the normal fares these airlines would charge, but would probably be more expensive than the Spirit fares," Harteveldt added.

More pressure on fares

Harteveldt said Spirit's collapse would affect airfares depending on how quickly other airlines fill those routes, but expanding operations could prove difficult before the busy summer season.

"Airlines' plans have already been committed for the summer. But over time, within three to six months, I would not be surprised to see Froniter, Avelo, Breeze and Allegiant all take steps to enter markets that Spirit served," Harteveldt said, citing some of Spirit's low-cost competitors. "I do expect a lot of budget airlines will try to backfill Spirit somehow."

Kheel said Spirit helped keep airfares in check, even if it wasn't the most popular with consumers.

"With them soon to be gone, I think we're likely to see an increase," he said. "That's on top of the airfare increases we're already seeing from the increase in jet fuel prices. This is only going to make that situation worse."
