Mom charged with involuntary manslaughter over teen son's alleged e-motorcycle crash

Mom charged with involuntary manslaughter over teen son's alleged e-motorcycle crash

A California mother has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after her 14-year-old childallegedly hit an 81-year-old veteranwhile doing wheelies on an e-motorcycle and the man later died, officials said Friday.

ABC News

Tommi Jo Mejer, 50, was "repeatedly warned" of the risk involved with her son riding the e-motorcycle but allegedly allowed the teen to continue to illegally ride it, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

Her son was allegedly riding the e-motorcycle on April 16 when he struck Ed Ashman while the 81-year-old substitute teacher was walking home from work in Lake Forest, according to prosecutors. The Surron e-motorcycle rider fled the scene, authorities said.

Mother charged after teen son allegedly hits and injures 81-year-old veteran while riding e-motorcycle

Hours after the collision, Mejer allegedly told authorities investigating the crash that neither she nor her son owned or had access to a Surron.

Mejer was arrested on April 21 and initially charged with felony counts of child endangerment and accessory after the fact to a crime.

Ashman, who was critically injured in the collision, died on Thursday, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office, which has now upgraded Mejer's charges to include involuntary manslaughter.

Mejer has also been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and providing false information to a peace officer, both misdemeanors, and an infraction for permitting an unlicensed minor under the age of 18 to drive a motor vehicle.

"An American hero who survived flying combat missions in Vietnam could not survive walking across the street in Lake Forest because of a 14-year-old child who was allowed to ride an e-motorcycle that he should have never been riding," Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement. "This mother essentially handed her 14-year-old son a deadly weapon, and despite multiple warnings of the dangers, continued to let him illegally ride an e-motorcycle until he finally killed someone."

According to prosecutors, Mejer had contacted the Orange County Sheriff's Department nearly a year before the collision, in June 2025, to complain about someone posting photos of her son riding an e-motorcycle. During the interaction, Mejer "admitted that she purchased her son a Surron e-motorcycle and knew that he drove it recklessly," the district attorney's office said in a press release.

The deputies warned her that "she could face potential criminal charges if she continued to allow him to ride the e-motorcycle, which he could not legally ride," the office said. Riders of this class of e-motorcycle must be 16 years of age and possess a motorcycle license, according to the district attorney's office.

Growing number of trauma, brain injuries linked to e-bikes and e-scooters at 1 hospital: Study

Mejer faces a maximum sentence of seven years and eight months in state prison if convicted on all counts, prosecutors said. She is scheduled to be arraigned on May 21. It is unclear if she has an attorney.

The district attorney's office said it is barred by state law from identifying the juvenile involved or discussing the investigation involving him.

Ashman served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps and flew combat missions in Vietnam, the district attorney's office said.

"This is a tragedy for the family of Ed Ashman and for everyone who loved a man who committed himself to his country and his community, and it is a tragedy for our society that we have gotten to a point where parents are refusing to hold their children -- and themselves -- accountable for endangering the lives of other people," Spitzer said. "If parents aren't going to hold their children accountable, then I am going to hold parents accountable for hurting and killing innocent people while riding illegal motor vehicles."

Among the fifth and final season’s many twists and turns was the reveal thatJohn had been killedby hitmen as part of a murder-for-hire plot coordinated by Jamie’s (Wes Bentley) girlfriend, Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri).

Speaking withThe Hollywood Reporterafter John’s shocking death,Yellowstonedirector and cinematographer Christina Alexandra Voros praised creator Taylor Sheridan’s decision to center the season around the emotional aftermath of his passing rather than the act.

“What’s interesting about birth and death is not the birth and death itself, but the way it affects us as people,” she said at the time. “To me, I think that was the driving force in telling the story this way. He’s asked, ‘How does everybody else survive and what do they do?’ And that’s where the mystery is. That is where the unraveling is. That is where the story is.”

Colin Jost shares Scarlett Johansson’s reaction to him buying a ferry

Colin Josttalks about Scarlett Johansson’s reaction to his ferry ownership at theSmartlesspodcast. Co-host Sean Hayes asked the comedian, regarding the deal, “You paid, you still have to pay, like, don’t you?” Jost replied, “These are [the] exact questions a financial advisor asks me.”

As reported byEW, he shared how he consulted Davidson regarding the purchase. The “Saturday Night Live” writer said, “texted Pete, which is the wrong person to text with when you have an idea like this. And I was like, ‘Should we buy this?”

However, Davidson replied, “‘F— yeah, we’ve got to do this.” Moreover, Jost texted his father, Daniel A. Jost. “And he literally was like, ‘Did you do your homework?’ Which is such a teacher thing to say. I was like, ‘Dad, I’m just sort of texting you as a formality,” he shared. Soon, Jost broke the news to his wife as he stated, “I already bought the boat. Then I texted Scarlett, like, ‘Guess what? We own a ferry now.’ And she was like, ‘We?”

The father of one also explained how it has been misreported that the ferry is “some sort of crazy money pit. “I joke about it a lot, but it is, we’ve done some events on it where we really have already made back the money we’ve invested and the money we’ve spent on stuff to dock it and all that,” Jost said. Additionally, shared his, Davidson, and their architect co-owner, Rob Castellano’s plan for the ferry.

“I was thinking in a real estate way, if you put it somewhere, it’s 70,000 square feet,” the 43-year-old shared. He continued, “So I was like, ‘If you put that on a dock in Manhattan, you’ve suddenly got basically a building on the waterfront.”

Co-director of 2025 doc “Mr. Nobody Against Putin” says his Oscar is lost after it was confiscated by TSA

Co-director of 2025 doc “Mr. Nobody Against Putin” says his Oscar is lost after it was confiscated by TSA

Documentarian David Borenstein says his Mr. Nobody Against Putin co-director, Pavel Talankin, had his Oscar confiscated by TSA at New York's JFK airport, and it's now lost.

Key Points

  • According to Borenstein, a TSA agent refused to allow Talankin to carry the Oscar onto his plane, requesting he place it in a box that was sent under the plane, but never arrived at its destination.

  • "Would Pavel have been treated the same way if he were a famous actor?" Borenstein questioned. "Or a fluent English speaker?"

It sounds like a case for Columbo.

Documentarian David Borenstein took to hisInstagramon Thursday to share an urgent plea: "An Oscar is missing," he wrote. "[Lufthansa], we need your help with this."

Borenstein and his co-director, Pavel Talankin, took home a pair of Oscars mere weeks ago, after their filmMr. Nobody Against Putinwon Best Documentary Feature Film at the 98thAcademy Awards. But Talankin has barely had the chance to enjoy this massive honor, Borenstein explained, after a snafu at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport resulted in his little gold man being confiscated, and now going missing.

"Yesterday he arrived at JFK ready to fly home to Europe, carrying the Oscar as a carry-on. I snapped the first picture here of him on his way out," Borenstein wrote, over a shot of a smiling Talankin weighted down with luggage. If you look closely, his gleaming Oscar rests in a netted bag slung over his right shoulder.

"At the airport, a TSA agent stopped him and said the Oscar could be used as a weapon. She wouldn't let him carry it on board," Borenstein claimed, explaining that their attempts to reason with the Transportation Security Administration agent were unsuccessful, so they "put the Oscar in a box and sent it to the bottom of the plane."

Borenstein included pictures of the box in question, which "never arrived in Frankfurt," and the lost baggage slip Talankin was given there.

Borenstein then speculated: "Would Pavel have been treated the same way if he were a famous actor? Or a fluent English speaker?"

He implored TSA and the airline Lufthansa to aid them in the search, and threw a Hail Mary by ending his post with the request, "If anyone else has ever had to check an Oscar statuette, I'd love to know."

Entertainment Weeklyhas reached out to representatives for TSA, the JFK Airport, Lufthansa, Talankin, and Borenstein for comment.

Talankin, a Russian schoolteacher, also stars inMr. Nobody Against Putin. The film begins as a simple chronicle of his class at a primary school in Karabash, a working class town in Western Russia, near the Kazakhstan border. But as the film unfolds, he also captures the transformation of the school from an impartial bastion of education to a propaganda-fueled disinformation site amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

The directing duo also won the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary, and the Special Jury Award at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where the film premiered.

Melissa Etheridge blasts a journalist who "changed every pronoun I used" in a 1992 interview.

Key Points

  • When the magazine was published, the singer was "horrified" to see her "girlfriend" had become a "boyfriend."

  • Etheridge ultimately decided to come out soon after in January 1993.

Just asMelissa Etheridgewas ready to come out, a journalist nearly pushed her further into the closet.

Months before the rockerannounced, “I’m very proud to have been a lesbian all my life,” at the Triangle Ball in January 1993, she was on the cover ofMusic Expressmagazine.

Although she spoke openly in the interview, when the issue was published she was shocked to see “he changed every pronoun that I used,” Etheridge recalled toGood CharlotteguitaristBenji Maddenon theArtist Friendlypodcast. “He changed it to my ‘boyfriend,’ and it horrified me.”

At the time, “the gay community was really strong, but it was underground,” she explained. “And I’m like, ‘Oh my god, they’re going to think that I did this.’”

The betrayal inspired Etheridge to make a bold statement about her sexuality.

Her original strategy was to come out on theArsenio Hall Showto coincide with the September 1993 release of her fourth album,Yes I Am. But after working on the Bill Clinton–Al Gore campaign, when she was around “powerful gay leaders,” she expedited the plan to Jan. 20 at the Triangle Ball, the gay-themed celebration ofPresident Clinton’s inauguration.

Standing onstage beside singerk.d. lang, who publicly came out in 1992, Etheridge acknowledged her “sister” was her inspiration.

“And I’m very proud to say right here, I’m very proud to have been a lesbian all my life,” she said.

Looking back at the moment three decades later, “I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to be truthful to myself and speak about it,” Etheridge told Madden. “It comes back to me constantly.”

Early in her career, when her self-titled debut album came out in 1988, the singer’s sexuality was “an unspoken thing” with fans. At her concerts, “my first two rows would be women losing their minds,” she recalled. “And I’m like, ‘I don’t know…’”

By the time of her 1992 album,Never Enough, alternative music was sweeping the nation. The grunge scene’s uniform, flannel, was already a staple in Etheridge’s wardrobe, and the trend also helped ease her out of the proverbial closet.

“I’ve been wearing flannel for a long time,” she told Madden, “and I hear ‘alternative,’ and I’m like, ‘This is the time.’”

Riots erupt in Australia over Indigenous girl’s death as local assault suspect

Violencebroke out in a remote town in northern Australia after police arrested themain suspect in the murder of a five-year-oldIndigenous girl.

Jefferson Lewis, 47, was arrested late on Thursday night local time inAlice Springs.

The young girl, referred to by her family as Kumanjayi Little Baby in line with Indigenous customs, was reported missing from her central Australian home late on Saturday.

Authorities located the body, believed to be hers, shortly before midday on Thursday, about 5km south of the original crime scene.

Local reports said a crowd attacked Mr Lewis when he appeared in a localcommunityand beat him unconscious before police intervened.

Police said they had long suspected that Lewis received assistance from people in thecommunitybefore he appeared at a town camp.

“For him to be able to appear inAlice Springslast night just confirms to us that he was getting support from somebody,” police commissioner Martin Dole of the Northern Territory said.

“My message to those people is, look out because we're coming for you as well.”

When officers took him to a local hospital, hundreds of “angry” residents gathered, shouting for him to be killed and demanding “payback”, according to the ABC.

The situation escalated into rioting as people threw rocks and bottles, set vehicles on fire, and damaged property. Police responded with rubber bullets and tear gas to control the crowd.

Several officers were injured in the violence.

The unrest continued into the next day, leaving streets littered with debris and signs of looting nearby. Authorities later transferred Mr Lewis to Darwin for his safety and to prevent furtherviolence.

“As a result of presenting himself, members of that town camp decided to inflict vigilante justice upon Jefferson, and we received numerous phone calls saying he was in the process of being assaulted,” Mr Dole said on Friday.

Theviolencefollowed days of search for the girl, who had gone missing from a remote Aboriginal town camp nearAlice Springs.

Hours after the girl’s death was confirmed, Mr Lewis was reportedly seen wandering near the Charles Creek town camp in centralAlice Springs.

“Members of that town camp decided to inflict vigilante justice upon Jefferson and we received numerous phone calls saying he was in the process of being assaulted,” Mr Dole said.

“Our police officers were attacked at that time, as were the St John Ambulance crew that attended to assist. They were turned on by about 200 people, but they were able to get out of there and get Mr Lewis to hospital.”

Videos from outside the Alice Springs Hospital showed protesters demanding “payback”, meaning a form of traditional punishment under Aboriginal law in Central Australia.

Reports said anger within thecommunityremained high. “The feeling is that the police are protecting this guy. They are shooting us with rubber bullets,” Harley Myers, an Arrernte man from Alice Springs, said.

“It’s like the system is not sticking up for us and letting us get our own traditional payback.”

“We’re united because it hurts all of us,” he added, “because she was only five years old and it could happen to any of our kids. I don’t want that to happen to any of our kids at all.”

Indigenous leaders, however, urged calm. “Bringing the word ‘payback’ into this scenario just fuelsviolence,” Michael Liddle, an Alyawarre man and Alice Springs local, told the BBC.

“There’s a system set up here, where there is a person in custody, and the Western rules will deal with that person.”

The girl’s grandfather also called for calm on Friday. “What has happened this week is not our way,” Robin Granites, a senior Yapa elder, said in a statement.

“Our children are precious, of course, we are feeling angry and hurt at what has happened. This man has been caught, thanks tocommunityaction, and we must now let justice take its course while we take the time to mourn Kumanjayi Little Baby and support our family.”

On Thursday, the girl’s mother, who was not named, said: “It is going to be so hard to live the rest of our lives without you. Me and your brother will meet you one day.”

Mr Dole said charges against Mr Lewis were likely to be filed in the coming days.
