Matthew Broderick's career-defining role as Ferris Bueller almost went to a fellow '80s heartthrob.

John Hughes, who wrote and directed the beloved 1986 teen comedyFerris Bueller's Day Off, originally pitched a different actor to play the titular role before Broderick got the iconic part, according to the upcoming bookFerris Bueller…You're My Hero: The Story of the World's Most Famous Day Off.

In an excerpt of the book shared byEntertainment Weekly, author Jason Klamm explains that while Hughes was pitching the film, he and Paramount executives considered someone else to play the high schooler who fakes sick to skip school in the Chicago-set flick:Jon Cryer, a.k.a. Duckie fromPretty in Pink, another beloved classic from the Hughes catalog.

But Cryer, 60, told Klamm that he was never aware that he was considered for the titular role — only Cameron Frye, Bueller's friend, who was ultimately played byAlan Ruck. On the filmmaker and execs' consideration for the iconic lead role, he said it was "news to me."

Asked if his team ever informed him of the consideration forFerris Bueller, theTwo and a Half Menstar told the author, "Yes, for the Alan Ruck character."

"I mean, I'm just too similar to Matthew," he said of why he likely wasn't cast as Cameron — a sentiment he has stated before, reflecting on how he and Broderick, 64,were often compared to each other at the height of their Brat Pack days.

Klamm also writes in the book, which hits shelves June 16, that Cryer "did feel like he was missing out," since Hughes often came to set onPretty in PinkwhileFerris Buellerwas also in production.

"Ferris Buellersounded a little more antically comedic thanPretty in Pinkwas," Cryer said, per the excerpt shared byEW. "It sounded like he was going to have a great time, and I was like, 'Oh, that would have been a fun project to do with him.' "

"I recall being a little jealous at the time," Cryer added.

Hughes museAnthony Michael Hallis also long-rumored to have been considered for the lead role inFerris Bueller, which also starredMia Sara,Jennifer GreyandCharlie Sheen.

Hall, 57, later wrote that the filmmaker "actually had written Ferris Bueller for me," but they "both determined that I should move on to other things," perEW. (Hughes never publicly confirmed Hall's claim.)

Speaking with PEOPLE at the premiere ofAndrew McCarthy's documentaryBRATSin 2024, Cryer said that he and Broderick are no longer mistaken for each other — a frequent occurrence in the '80s.

"No, Matthew and I have since parted ways," he said at the time, joking that theGloryactor "still has hair," unlike him.

"He still has a magnificent head of hair, God bless him," Cryer continued. "He should have it. He should work it as much as possible. You should enjoy it. But I have gone the other direction."

Jonathan Majors' comeback isn't going entirely according to plan.

In a new video, theAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniaactor can be seen falling through a window on the set of his new untitled action movie produced by The Daily Wire, the right-wing media company founded by Ben Shapiro.

In the clip,published by Deadline, Majors and his costar JC Kilcoyne move backward as the former's character seems to be shot, and then fall through a set of blinds and out of frame. The audio appears to capture the sound of glass breaking, prompting multiple people on set to exclaim, "Ooh!"

Multiple crew members then rush over to look outside the window and ask if the actors are all right. One person says, "I'm good, you good," to which another responds, "I'm good."

One voice can be heard saying, "Did we shoot it?"

A crew member later warns, "Be careful of the glass, guys."

Representatives for Majors and Kilcoyne did not immediately respond toEntertainment Weekly's request for comment.

The crew union International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees called a strike against the film's production last month over a series of alleged labor issues, Deadlinereportedearlier this week. The outlet also reported that the window in the video was replaced by tempered glass intended to be shattered during a later stunt that was not supposed to involve any of the actors.

When reached for comment about the incident and the crew members' allegations, the project's producer, Dallas Sonnier, told EW, "The actors' fall was shorter than the failed movie careers of the now-union reps."

A representative for Kilcoyne told Deadline that the actor "is doing well and was taken care of immediately by production," noting that "JC did not feel unsafe on set and continues to have a positive experience working on the project."

Majors received acclaim for his performances in dramas likeDa 5 BloodsandThe Last Black Man in San Francisco, and his star continued to rise after he appeared in franchise fare likeCreed IIIandAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. However, his career momentum came to a halt when he was found guilty of one count of assault in the third degree and one count of harassment in the second degree in December 2023. Though hedid not face prison time for the conviction, Majors was ordered to complete a 52-week in-person batterer's intervention program and continue his mental health therapy.

After the controversy, Marvel Studioscanceled its plansto make Majors' character Kang the Conqueror the main antagonist of its upcomingAvengersmovie, the title of which was changed fromAvengers: The Kang DynastytoAvengers: Doomsday. Later, reports surfaced thatSearchlight Pictures— also owned by Marvel's parent company, Disney — returned the distribution rights it had purchased for Majors' bodybuilding dramaMagazine Dreams. The film was eventually released by Briarcliff Entertainment.

Blake Lively posted a lengthy statement after a major development in her "unfathomably painful" case against her former It Ends With Us director, Justin Baldoni.

TheGossip Girlstar posted a lengthy statement on Instagram the day after Judge Lewis Liman of the Southern District of New Yorkdismissed 10 of her 13 claimsagainst herIt Ends With Usdirector and costar and other defendants, including her sexual harassment claims.

"I'm grateful for the Court's ruling, which allows the heart of my case to be presented to a jury next month, and for the ability to finally tell my story in full at trial, for my own sake, but also for those who don't have the same opportunity to... many of whom I have known and loved deeply in my life, and the countless I'll never know," Lively wrote after Liman allowed the case to proceed to trial with only claims of breach of contract, retaliation in violation of the California Fair Employment and Housing Act, and aiding and abetting in retaliation in violation of FEHA.

"The last thing I wanted in my life was a lawsuit, but I brought this case because of the pervasive RETALIATION I faced, and continue to, for privately and professionally asking for a safe working environment for myself and others," Lively continued. "I hope the Court's decision shows others that, as unfathomably painful as it is, you can speak up."

Representatives for Baldoni did not immediately respond toEntertainment Weekly's request for comment.

Lively urged her supporters to continue taking the case seriously. "Don't be distracted by the digital soap opera. The constant packaging of this lawsuit as a 'celebrity drama' is not only irresponsible, but it is by design: to keep you from seeing yourselves in my story," she said. "The physical pain from digital violence is very real. It is abuse. And it's everywhere. Not just in the news, but in your communities and schools."

TheSisterhood of the Traveling Pantsactress, who alleges that she was targeted in an online smear campaign to damage her reputation, suggested that "digital warfare" could impact everyone, not just celebrities.

"It often won't be directed at celebrities or those who may be able to speak up," she said. "It affects us all. Across the political spectrum. Pay attention to all the ways we can be manipulated online. Digital manipulation has been boasted as 'untraceable'. If you have kids on phones, they are some of the most vulnerable. Protect them. Have conversations with them."

Lively added that her lawsuit is part of a long fight against online harassment that extends far beyond her individual case. "So much critical work has already been done to expose systems, tactics, and players who harm," she said. "The work to create more safety is in part at trial, but it [will also] continue far after this trial is over. This is the work I'm most proud of."

She continued, "I couldn't begin to stand up if not for the countless who've gone before me — and the masses who are still around us all — creating laws, social change, sparking conversations, rallying, working privately and publicly, risking and sometimes losing everything for the safety of others in all spaces. Some whose names we know, most we don't. Thank you. All of you."

Lively concluded her remarks with resolve to continue her case. "I will never stop doing my part in fighting to expose the systems and people who seek to harm, shame, silence, and retaliate against victims," she said. "I know it's a privilege to be able to stand up. I will not waste it. Your support keeps me going."

Judge Liman dismissed 10 of Lively's 13 claims, including sexual harassment claims against Baldoni. He ruled that the actress' sexual harassment claims could not move forward because she was not technically an employee, but instead an independent contractor.

He also argued that Baldoni's conduct on set "was directed to Lively's character rather than to Lively herself" because he was acting. "Creative artists, no less than comedy room writers, must have some amount of space to experiment within the bounds of an agreed script without fear of being held liable for sexual harassment," Liman said in his ruling.

Baldoni's lead attorney, Bryan Freedman, responded to Liman's decision in a statement to EW earlier this week.

"Since the first day of this case, when Justin and the other defendants were blindsided by these allegations, the legal team on the ground from the beginning have worked extremely long days and nights defending this case through transparency by releasing the actual truthful text messages, and by welcoming and facilitating the release of all documents exhibiting the truth," he said.

"The defendants were not afraid of the truth," he continued. "The plan was not only to speak the truth, but to also show that same truth over and over again through the presentation of actual evidence. Neither Justin Baldoni, Jamey Heath, nor any of the other defendants have engaged in the sexual harassment of Blake Lively."

Freedman added, "Despite our clients being accused of DARVO (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim, and Offender) in defending these claims, and despite our client being referred to in writing as a predator, what I said, on behalf of our clients day one and every day since then, is true … Our clients are very good people who have not engaged in this sexual harassment as alleged. As such, they have deserved a vigorous defense which was led through transparency. It is gratifying to see that the court's ruling confirms what the legal team believed from day one."

ITTEFAQ, Afghanistan (AP) — For several minutes after the earthquake struck, he could hear their screams. Then there was silence.

Afghanistan Earthquake

Mohibullah Niazi, a neighbor who helped in the rescue efforts, said Saturday that the eight people killed on the outskirts of Kabul after a5.8 magnitude earthquakestruck northern Afghanistan the previous night were a refugee family recently returned from neighboring Iran.

There was only one survivor: a boy of around 3 years old, who was injured and has been hospitalized in Kabul.

Afghanistan's deputy government spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat on Saturday increased the overall death toll from the quake to 12, with another four people injured. Fitrat said five homes were destroyed and another 33 significantly damaged, affecting 40 families in the provinces of Kabul, Panjshir, Logar, Nangarhar, Laghman and Nuristan.

The Afghanistan Disaster Management Authority put the overall death toll at nine. The reason for the discrepancy was not immediately clear.

The family near Kabul was among themillions of Afghan refugeeswho have recently returned from Iran and Pakistan, afterboth countries launched crackdownsin 2023 on foreigners — particularly Afghans — living in their countries.

They had arrived 15 days ago and were living in a tent on land next to Niazi's home. The family head, Najibullah, who was about 50 years old, "had no other shelter," Niazi said. "He was a very poor person."

'We tried our best'

The family had set their tent up next to a wall separating the plot of land from Niazi's home, which stood on higher ground, in the village of Ittefaq on the eastern outskirts of the Afghan capital.

Heavy rainsover the past several days, which have led to deadly floods in many parts of Afghanistan, had left the ground sodden and soft. When the earthquake struck, the wall collapsed on the family.

"My daughter shouted to me that a wall had fallen on them. The whole family ran, but there were so many big rocks," Niazi recounted Saturday as he stood at the scene. "We tried our best."

On Saturday morning, piles of bricks and mud were all that were left, along with blankets, cooking utensils and other personal belongings salvaged from the rubble and set into a pile.

"For about three minutes, I could hear the voices of these people," Niazi said. "But we couldn't do anything. There were two or three of us, but this was not the work of three people."

Neighbors soon rushed to help, digging through the mud and rubble with spades and their hands. They alerted the local Taliban police checkpoint, which sent rescuers and ambulances.

The young boy, Aarash, was pulled out alive but injured, and rushed to the hospital. Health Ministry spokesperson Sharafat Zaman, who visited the boy Saturday, said he was being treated for a severe head injury.

For the rest of the family — the father and mother, four daughters aged between 12 and 23, and two sons — it was too late. The rescuers could only recover their bodies.

Niazi said he had hosted the family in his own home one night. On Friday, just half an hour before the earthquake struck, he had renewed the offer, telling the family they could spend the night in his own guest room to shelter from the cold and rain. "But they did not come with me," he said.

A string of deadly quakes

Friday night's quake had an epicenter in the Hindu Kush mountain range, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) east of the northern city of Kunduz, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center and the U.S. Geological Survey. The area is roughly 290 kilometers (180 miles) northeast of Kabul.

Afghanistan lies in ahighly seismically activepart of the world, and quakes have caused thousands of deaths in recent years.

Last August,a 6.0 earthquakethat struck a remote, mountainous part of eastern Afghanistan killed more than 2,200 people. Most casualties were in Kunar province, where people typically live in wood and mud-brick houses along steep valleys.

In November,a 6.3 earthquakestruck Samangan province in northern Afghanistan, killing at last 27 people and injuring more than 950. It also damaged historical sites, including Afghanistan's famed Blue Mosque in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif, and the Bagh-e-Jahan Nama Palace in Khulm.

On Oct. 7, 2023,a 6.3 quakefollowed by strong aftershocks in western Afghanistan killed thousands of people.

Pope Leo chose to wash the feet of the priests from the Diocese of Rome – 11 of whom he had ordained last year – as a sign of his mindfulness to the needs of priests, according toThe National Catholic Reporter. In hishomily, Pope Leo also said he hoped the ritual would inspire others to care for each other.

"We tend to consider ourselves powerful when we dominate, victorious when we destroy our equals, great when we are feared. In contrast, as true God and true man, Christ offers us the example of self-giving, service and love," said Leo, whobecame the first U.S. pope in May 2025.

"As humanity is brought to its knees by so many acts of brutality, let ​us too kneel down as brothers and sisters alongside the oppressed," ​he said.

The washing of priests' feet was a marked departure from the practice of his predecessorPope Francis, who preferred to hold the service outside churches, usually in prisons, homes for the elderly or hospices, continuing a practice he began as a ​bishop in Argentina.

Just two weeks after becoming pope in 2013 – afterthe resignation of Pope Benedict XVI– Francis observed Holy Thursday bywashing the feet of inmates in a youth detention center. Some of those inmates were non-Catholics and some were women. No previous pope has ever washed women's feet, notedThe National Catholic Reporter at the time.

Pope Leo's gesture is seen as part of his efforts to ease divisions in the Catholic Church,The New York Times reported.

Why does the pope wash feet?

Pope Leowashed the feet of 12 priests on April 2, during the Mass of the Lord's Supper at theBasilica of Saint John Lateranin Rome.

"God has given ​us an example – not of how to dominate, but of how to liberate," ​said the pope, before bending down to pour water over the feet of the 12 men, one by one, before drying and kissing each one.

The washing of feet harkens back to how Jesus washed the feet of his apostles during the Last Supper. At that last meal before his crucifixion, Jesus also introduced the Eucharist, during which priests preside over the transformation of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ.

By washing others' feet, Jesus offers "a moral example" to act as he did and care for others, the pope said in his homily.

"He entrusts to us his very way of life," Pope Leo said. "The washing of the feet is a gesture that encapsulates the revelation of God: an exemplary sign of the Word made flesh, his unmistakable memorial. By taking on the condition of a servant, the Son reveals the Father's glory, overturning the worldly standards that so often distort our conscience."

A small airplane made an emergency landing on Interstate 78 in Allentown, Pennsylvania on Saturday morning, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The Rockwell Commander landed at around 9:20 a.m. after reporting engine issues, the FAA said.

The two people onboard were not injured, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Dashcam video of the incident circulating on social media shows the plane flying low overhead before landing on the interstate and slowing down.

Emily Rivera, who posted the video, was traveling from Harrisburg to Lehigh Valley when she saw the plane make the landing.

"Honestly I was in disbelief because I never expected a plane to land in front of me!" Rivera said, adding that she was impressed with how the pilot landed.

Police said to expect delays in the area and that all traffic eastbound is being detoured onto exit 40. More information will be released later, police said.

The FAA is investigating the incident.

Fitting for an active March, the final day of the month brought severe weather. This trend continued into the first week of April, leading to rounds of severe storms every day from March 31 to April 4.

Severe Recap

Tuesday, March 31, severe thunderstorms with wind gusts up to 75 mph rumbled across the southern Great Lakes from northern Indiana to western Pennsylvania and New York. Trees were downed in several areas, some on homes.

Three weak tornadoes were confirmed, including EF1s in Cattaraugus County, New York and near Hicksville, Ohio. A brief EF0 was also confirmed near Apple Creek, Ohio.

In total, there were over 90 wind reports and over 40 large hail reports March 31.

Flash flooding was reported in parts of the Cleveland metro area, and basements were flooded in Austintown and Lowellville, Ohio.

To start the month of April, severe thunderstorms were scattered from Delaware to eastern New Mexico. Hail up to the size of tennis balls was seen in Blaine County, Oklahoma. Roof damage was reported in Snyder, Texas, and wind gusts from 70 to 75 mph were clocked in a few areas between Lubbock and Wichita Falls. Flash flooding was reported overnight in parts of western Missouri south of Kansas City. There were around 60 damaging wind reports and over 20 large hail reports.

It was more of the same April 2 as severe thunderstorms erupted across parts of the Midwest.

One long-livedsupercell thunderstormapparently spawned severaltornadoesacross parts of eastern Iowa, south and east of Iowa City, to near the Mississippi River north of Davenport.

Significant damage, also from an apparent tornado, was reported near Dixon, Illinois. Trees were downed on homes in Parke County, Indiana, and hail larger than baseballs was reported near Martinsburg, Iowa, and Thomson, Illinois.

On April 3, there were two tornado reports, one in Tazewell County, Illinois, and one in Seminole County, Oklahoma. Of the over 20 hail reports, the most impressive was baseball-sized hail - 2.75 inches in diameter- reported in Kiowa County, Oklahoma. Surveyors are being sent out and more information will be revealed throughout the weekend.

Nearly 20 high wind reports have come in, primarily across Texas and Oklahoma. Gusts between 60-70 mph were more widespread, with Hardeman County, Texas, seeing a gust of 86 mph.

In total, there have been nearly 30 flood reports from around 6 pm on April 3 to about noon on April 4, including some water rescues from cars stuck in flooded streets in Texas and Ohio.

April 4 saw a tornado strick Lindale, Texas, bringing damage to three homes.

Storm Fatigue

It was yet another active March for severe weather in the U.S., including parts of the Midwest.

On March 6, four tornadoes struck southern Michigan, including an EF3 in Branch County, killing three, an EF2 in Three Rivers and an EF1 tornado that claimed a life in Cass County.

Four days later, a lone supercell spawned 12 tornadoes across northeast Illinois into northwest Indiana, including the EF3 Kankakee, Illinois, tornado, which killed three.

Then on March 15, another 17 tornadoes were confirmed across central and southern Illinois.

NOAA's Storm Prediction Center has received 196 reports of and confirmed tornadoes in March, almost double the 20-year average of March twisters (104).

Be Prepared

There are steps you can take to stay safe in severe weather:

1. Know where to seek safe shelter when severe weather strikesbeforethe storm. If you live in a manufactured home, the safest place is probably either a designated community shelter or the closest building, such as a church, industrial building or any building with reinforced concrete.

2. Have multiple ways of receiving official National Weather Service watches and warnings, including from yourphoneandNOAA weather radio. Make sure your devices are fully charged in case you lose power and alerts are turned on to wake you up at night.

3. Seek safe shelterimmediatelywhen you receive a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning for your area.

4.Never drive into floodwaters. You could be carried away and the road underneath could have been washed away.
