Welcome to Trendlines, your weekly installment of what's trending up and what's trending down in the world of sports.

This week, millions of Americans breathed a sigh of relief. No longer will they (and in this case me) be worried about whether their weekends would continue to be filled with boredom.

No, the NFL's Hall of Fame game marked the beginning of the preseason. It's the first sign that autumn is near and football is back.

Every new season means hope for teams that have never won a Super Bowl (like the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers, the Hall of Fame game participants).

It, unfortunately, also means that some classic teams that have recently struggled get another shot at rediscovering their greatness of yore.

And this is where we begin.

Trending down – Dallas Cowboys' Super Bowl wins: Down for 29 seasons in a row

There are few things more delicious than "America's team" (and the quotes are there for a reason) falling flat on its face over and over again.

Can you believe Dallas hasn't appeared in or won a Super Bowl since the mid-1990s? There are people I work with who weren't even alive then.

The Cowboys were truly mediocre last year and they're hoping to bounce back this season under new coach Brian Schottenheimer. I don't know how Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones landed on Schottenheimer, but things aren't looking good for the team with a Lone Star.

Vegas odds put the Cowboys' chances of winning a Super Bowl this year at about 2%.

How very, very sad that Dallas' Super Bowl drought looks like it'll hit the big 3-0 after this season.

Trending down – New England Patriots' playoff wins: Down six seasons in a row

When the Patriots were winning all of those Super Bowls, the big question was whether quarterback Tom Brady or head coach Bill Belichick was more responsible.

Well, the Pats haven't won a playoff game since Brady left. Brady went on to win a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Belichick, on the other hand, is now coaching in college.

This has left the team from the Bay State in a world of hurt. They finished last season with more than three times as many losses as wins. They were so bad that they dumped their first-year head coach Jerod Mayo and brought in Mike Vrabel.

This season? The betting odds say that they will miss the playoffs again.

We're a long way from nobody being able to stop the Brady/Belichick duo.

Delicious.

Trending up – Buffalo Bills playoff wins: Up five seasons in a row

Although they lost last night, the Lions have one of the five best chances of winning a Super Bowl this season. They have a better shot than any team that's never won one, except for my Bills.

I used to joke that the Bills hadn't made the playoffs since before my bar mitzvah. The funniest jokes are always the true ones. They didn't make the playoffs from the 2000 season through the 2016 season.

Those days are gone. The Bills are basically in contention all the time now. They have won a playoff game in every season dating back to the 2020-2021 season. This five-year streak is the longest in the franchise's history.

The question is whether they can finally get to the mountain top with MVP quarterback Josh Allen. They have the second best chance, according to Vegas odds makers.

If Allen and the Bills can do it, then who says the Lions, Chargers, Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Minnesota Vikings or Tennessee Titans won't be next?

JEHAD ALSHRAFI August 1, 2025 at 2:52 PM

1 / 8Mideast Wars Gaza Starvation Photo EssaySamah Matar poses for a photo with her sons Yousef, 6, in her arms, and Amir, 4, who suffer from malnutrition and cerebral palsy, at a U.N.-run school in Gaza City, Saturday, July 26, 2025. In Gaza, malnutrition is often worsened by preexisting conditions and compounded by illnesses linked to inadequate health care and poor sanitation, largely the result of the ongoing war. (AP Photo/Jehad Alshrafi)

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — In some tents and shelters in northern Gaza, emaciated children are held in their parents' arms. Their tiny arms and legs dangle limp. Their shoulder blades and ribs stick out from skeletal bodies slowly consuming themselves for lack of food.

Starvation always stalks the most vulnerable first. Kids with preexisting conditions, like cerebral palsy, waste away quickly because the high-calorie foods they need have run out, along with nutritional supplements.

But after months of Israeli blockade and turmoil in the distribution of supplies, children in Gaza with no previous conditions are also starting to die from malnutrition, aid workers and doctors say.

Over the past month, 28 children have died of malnutrition-related causes, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, though it's not known how many had other conditions. The ministry, part of the Hamas-run government, is staffed by medical professionals and its figures on war deaths are seen by the U.N. and other experts as the most reliable estimate of casualties.

Salem Awad was born in January with no medical problems, the youngest of six children, his mother Hiyam Awad said. But she was too weak from lack of food to breastfeed him.

For the first two months of Salem's life, there was a ceasefire in Gaza, and more aid entered, but even then it was hard to find milk for him, his mother said. In March, Israel cut off all food from entering the territory for more than 2 ½ months.

Since then, Salem has been wasting away. Now he weighs 4 kilograms (9 pounds), his mother said. "He just keeps losing weight. At the hospital, they say if he doesn't get milk, he could die," she said, speaking in the family's tent in Gaza City.

Israel has been allowing a trickle of aid into Gaza since late May. After an international outcry over increasing starvation, it introduced new measures last weekend it says are intended to increase the amount of food getting to the population, including airdrops and pauses in military operations in some areas. But so far, they have not had a significant effect, aid groups say.

Food experts warned this week the "worst-case scenario of famine is playing out in Gaza." The U.N. says the impact of hunger building for months is quickly worsening, especially in Gaza City and other parts of northern Gaza, where it estimates nearly one in five children is now acutely malnourished.

Across Gaza, more than 5,000 children were diagnosed with malnutrition this month, though that is likely an undercount, the U.N. says. Malnutrition was virtually nonexistent before the war. Doctors struggle to treat the children because many supplies have run out, the U.N. says.

Israel denies a famine is taking place or that children are starving. It says it has supplied enough food throughout the war and accuses Hamas of causing shortages by stealing aid and trying to control food distribution.

Humanitarian groups deny that significant diversion of food takes place. Throughout nearly 22 months of war, the number of aid trucks has been far short of the roughly 500 a day the U.N. says is needed.

The impact is seen most strongly in children with special needs — and those who have been grievously wounded in Israeli bombardment.

Mosab al-Dibs, 14, suffered a heavy head wound on May 7 when an airstrike hit next to his family's tent. For about two months, he has been at Shifa Hospital, largely paralyzed, only partly conscious and severely malnourished because the facility no longer has the supplies to feed him, said Dr. Jamal Salha.

Mosab's mother, Shahinaz al-Dibs, said the boy was healthy before the war, but that since he was wounded, his weight has fallen from 40 kilograms to less than 10 (88 to 22 pounds)

At his bedside, she moves his spindly arms to exercise them. The networks of tiny blue veins are visible through the nearly transparent skin over his protruding ribs. The boy's eyes dart around, but he doesn't respond.

His mother puts some bread soaked in water — the only food she can afford — into a large syringe and squirts it into his mouth in a vain attempt to feed him. Most of it dribbles out from his lips. What he needs is a nutrient formula suitable for tube feeding that the hospital doesn't have, Salha said.

At a school-turned-shelter for displaced people in Gaza City, Samah Matar cradles her son Yousef as his little brother Amir lies on a cushion beside her — both of them emaciated. The two boys have cerebral palsy and also need a special diet.

"Before the war, their health situation was good," said Matar. They could get the foods they needed, but now "all those things have disappeared, and their health has declined continually."

Yousef, 6 years old, has dropped from 14 kilograms (30 pounds) before the war to 9 kilograms (19 pounds) now. His 4-year-old brother, Amir, has shrunk from 9 kilograms to under 6 (19 to 13 pounds), she said.

Federal Reserve governor to step down from role early

Drew Angerer / Getty Images

Washington — Federal Reserve governor Adriana Kugler will step down early from her post on the central bank's board, the Fed announced Friday, creating an open position for President Trump to fill.

The vacancy comes at a critical time for Mr. Trump, who has pressured the Fed to cut interest rates. Kugler's replacement will sit on a 12-member committee that sets interest rate targets.

Kugler was nominated to serve as a governor by former President Joe Biden and has been in the role since September 2023. She filled an unexpired term set to end Jan. 31, according to the central bank. Kugler's resignation is effective Aug. 8. Kugler is returning to Georgetown University to serve as a professor, according to the Fed.

"The Federal Reserve does important work to help foster a healthy economy and it has been a privilege to work towards that goal on behalf of all Americans for nearly two years," Kugler said in her resignation letter to Mr. Trump. "I am proud to have tackled this role with integrity, a strong commitment to serving the public, and with a data-driven approach strongly based on my expertise in labor markets and inflation."

The seven members of the Fed's Board of Governors are nominated to 14-year terms.

Mr. Trump has in recent weeks been critical of the Fed for not acting fast enough to lower interest rates, and has repeatedly directed his frustrations at Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. Mr. Trump on Friday called Powell a "disaster," and he has suggested in the past that the chair should be fired or step down before his term ends next year.

The central bank's Federal Open Market Committee said Wednesday that it would be keeping its benchmark interest rate unchanged, sparking renewed complaints from the president. Two committee members dissented from the decision and said they supported rate cuts, and Kugler did not vote.

Firing Powell would likely trigger a legal battle, as a president can only remove a member of the Fed's Board of Governors for "cause."

The president and White House officials have in recent weeks homed in on the renovation of the Fed's 90-year-old headquarters in Washington, D.C., the cost of which has ballooned to more than $2.5 billion. Mr. Trump visited the renovation project with Powell last week, during which he reiterated his desire for interest rates to come down.

When asked about firing Powell, the president said it is a "big move."

"I just don't think it's necessary," Mr. Trump said. "And I believe he's going to do the right thing."

Browns quarterback Kenny Pickett returns to the practice field after hamstring injury

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Quarterback Kenny Pickett returned to the field for the Cleveland Browns on Friday after missing three practices because of a hamstring injury.

Pickett did only individual work and did not participate in any team drills. It was still a step forward for the four-year veteran, who was expected to be out at least a week after getting hurt during a red-zone drill late in practice on July 26.

"Disappointed that he's not full go, but he's very much involved in everything we're doing," coach Kevin Stefanski said.

Pickett is vying with Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders for the starting quarterback spot. Cleveland opens the season on Sept. 7 against Cincinnati.

The Browns have three more practices scheduled before traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina, for a joint practice with the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday. Stefanski did not say if he anticipated Pickett would be full go for the joint workout.

During the first four practices of training camp, Pickett and Flacco received most of the snaps with the first team.

Even though Flacco has experience with the Browns after leading them to a playoff spot in 2023, Stefanski is eager to see what Pickett can do. The coaching staff likes Pickett's mobility and ability to create plays on the run.

Pickett was acquired from Philadelphia in March. A 2022 first-round draft selection by Pittsburgh, Pickett has 25 career starts with 15 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Stefanski did not say if he anticipated narrowing the quarterback field before he got to Carolina for the joint workouts and the first preseason game on Aug. 8. If Pickett is healthy, it is likely he and Flacco would get the work in the joint workouts, with Gabriel and Sanders then playing in the preseason game.

"I think for all of our positions, every single day is an important part of getting ready for the season and part of the evaluation. All of it is in an effort to get ready for Week 1 and evaluate our players," Stefanski said.

Making Friends As an Adult Is Hard. These Friendship Apps Can Help

-

 • Making Friends As an Adult Is Hard. These Friendship Apps Can Help

Rachel VarinaJuly 31, 2025 at 6:02 PM

12 Apps That Can Help You Make Friends as an Adult Getty Images

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links."

Making friends as an adult? Weirdly hard. Like, harder than deciding if you should get bangs. Once you're out of school and not bonding over dorm floor bathrooms or bottomless brunch hangovers every weekend, figuring out how to meet new people feels confusing at best and borderline impossible at worst. Which is where friendship apps come in to save the day—and your social life.

Think of them as the dating apps of your platonic dreams: low-lift, swipe-friendly, and full of future BFF potential. "The fact that these apps even exist says a lot about the very real challenges many people face in making new friends," says psychotherapist and relationship specialist Stevie Blum, LCSW. "Just downloading a friendship app and seeing how many people are also looking to connect can be surprisingly comforting."

Before you start doubting the effectiveness of an app to find friends, let me just stop your almost-spiral. "Friendships are a vital part of emotional and mental well-being, and can even impact your physical health," explains Blum. "But as we get older, those built-in opportunities start to fade. Friendships can feel harder to maintain or even awkward to build from scratch, so people often let them slide." But that need for a support system and someone to grab dinner with on a casual Thursday? Yeah, that never goes away.

That's why friendship apps are so clutch IRL—Blum says using them can def make the whole process easier. You already know everyone there is open to making new connections, and not only can you narrow down the pool of people based on things like interests, but you can also find folks who live near you, so you don't have to schlep across town for a quick hang.

(Before meeting up with someone IRL, though, Blum suggests picking a public location and letting someone else know where you're going. Safety first always!)

So, whether you just moved to a new city and are looking to build a whole new friend group, just went through a friend breakup (it happens!), or simply want someone to text during Love Island, we've got you. These friendship apps are here to help you make real, solid connections. Now let's go find you a platonic soul mate!

1. Yubo

Yubo

Many friendship apps have similar features to dating apps (making a profile, swiping on others, private messaging, etc.) but what makes Yubo unique is its catfish-free video chat feature. When you connect with someone, you can chat via live video from the app (like FaceTime, but without having to give out your phone number). This a) ensures the person you're talking to is actually who they say they are, and b) might help alleviate some of those first-time meetup jitters if you've already seen their face.

Shop Now

2. LMK

Right this way, extroverts, because this talk-based app is about to become your new obsession. Instead of just the standard DM-style messaging seen in most apps, LMK has a variety of ways to connect with people, like voice chats for example. You can instantly call or chat with folks (whether 1-on-1 or in a group) who have the same interests as you, so if you're in the mood to just gab, there's no sitting around and waiting for a match. Plus, once you're in a voice chat, there's a timer that'll end the call unless you choose to extend it, so no awkward goodbyes if you're just not clicking.

Shop Now

3. Bumble BFF

Bumble

If you've ever used Bumble for dating, Bumble BFF is literally the same concept, just for platonic friends. You still make a profile with a few photos, add a quick bio, and then swipe right on your faves. The main difference is that the timer to start a conversation isn't gendered, so it's on either of you to make the first move before the match expires.

Download here

4. WINK

Wink

WINK is another app that lets users swipe left or right on profiles they feel match best with their interests. You can select the gender and age range of people you want to connect with and add your interests so matches have at least one favorite activity in common with you. Chat directly on the app or move the conversation to Snapchat for something a little more private. It's like Tinder for friends. (You knew we were going to say it, didn't you?)

Download here

5. Hey! VINA

Hey! VINA

Hey! VINA is a friendship app built just for women looking to connect with like-minded ladies. Whether you're starting a new job, moving to a new city, or just feeling like your social circle could use a refresh, VINA matches you with potential besties based on shared interests, activities, and even your current life stage—because who you vibe with during a breakup might be totally different from who you need during a career pivot.

Download here6. Plura

Bloom

Making friends who share your interests is tricky for everyone, but oftentimes it's even harder for people in the kink, queer, sex-positive, and BDSM communities. Enter: Plura (formerly Bloom). The community-based lifestyle app was created to help people meet and connect with others in a safe and monitored space. Not only can you chat and connect like with other apps, but Bloom actually hosts tons of events, festivals, and meetups so you can connect IRL at an activity that feels more on brand than just coffee and small talk.

7. Peanut

Peanut

Peanut is an app for moms to meet other moms, founded by Michelle Kennedy, who worked at the dating app Badoo before giving birth in 2013. She described feeling very isolated as a new mother and wanted to find people who understood what she was going through. Since postpartum depression can make women feel especially alone, it's great to have an app where you can connect with someone navigating the same, sometimes-messy, emotional terrain as you are.

8. ATLETO

Atleto

If you're particularly in need of marathon buddies or tennis opponents, look no further. ATLETO is all about helping you find people based on your favorite sports, and encouraging you to host events and meet up IRL. And honestly, jogging or cycling together is pretty low-key when it comes to first conversations with someone.

9. Meetup

Meetup

If you have more specific interests, like knitting at a bar or being a part of a writing group, Meetup probably has something you're looking for. You simply enter your location and browse events by category. Voila! You'll find your crew in no time.

10. Friended

Friended

Simply need to get something off your chest? Friended lets you share your random thoughts in a controlled environment, allowing other users to reply or send encouragements to you privately. The point is to exchange niceties that should hopefully tumble into something more, or at the very least help you feel less alone. Who doesn't love getting their feelings validated by strangers? Yes, you'll still be clinging to your phone when you're out in public, but at least there'll be someone sweet on the other side of it.

11. Skout

Skout

Skout has been around since 2007, so they've been in the friendship (and dating!) app game for a long time. It's pretty simple: You use it to connect with people wherever you go, which seems particularly handy if you're traveling alone and want to grab a pint with someone... or even hook up. That's the thing with this app: you can use it to ~scout~ (heh) whatever it is you're looking for.

12. Nextdoor

Nextdoor

If you've moved to a new neighborhood and find it hard to connect with new people (a definite suburb problem), Nextdoor lets you know everything that's happening nearby—from yard sales to babysitting gigs. It's not as straightforward as "Hey, I'm looking for friends!" but in a way, it can feel like a more natural integration into your community.
