Ian CasselberryJuly 21, 2025 at 10:26 PM

Rich Hill just keeps on pitching. The veteran left-hander is being called up by the Kansas City Royals on Monday after he signed a minor-league deal with the team in mid-May. Hill's promotion from Triple-A Omaha was reported by FanSided's Robert Murray.

By joining the Royals, the 45-year-old Hill supplants Justin Verlander, 42, as the oldest active player in Major League Baseball. Hill will be the sixth 40-year-old on an MLB roster this season.

Kansas City is the 14th MLB team Hill will pitch for in his 21 seasons, tying Edwin Jackson for the most teams a player has joined during his career. Hill last pitched for the Boston Red Sox in 2024, when he made four appearances and compiled a 4.91 ERA in 3 2/3 innings.

Hill's role with the Royals isn't yet clear, as the team hasn't officially announced his recall. Kansas City's starting pitcher for Tuesday's matchup with the Chicago Cubs is TBD as of Monday, so Hill could get the start in that game. All nine of Hill's appearances for Triple-A Omaha were starts, averaging 4 2/3 innings. He collected a 5.36 ERA with 48 strikeouts and 25 walks in 42 innings.

In his July 13 start against the Toledo Mud Hens, Hill notched 10 strikeouts while allowing one run and four hits. With that, he became the first 45-year-old to reach double-digit strikeouts in a professional baseball game since Nolan Ryan did so against the Athletics on Aug. 6, 1992, according to FanSided.

The Royals currently have starting pitchers Cole Ragans (left rotator cuff strain), Alec Marsh (right shoulder soreness) and Michael Lorenzen (left oblique strain) on the injured list. Additionally, reliever Daniel Lynch IV (left elbow nerve irritation) has been sidelined since July 6.

Hill signed a minor-league contract with the Royals on May 13 and moved to Triple-A after two appearances with the club's Rookie League team. He could've opted out of his deal on June 15 but chose to remain with Omaha for the opportunity to be called up or sign with another team if one showed interest.

During his career, Hill's record is 90-74 with a 4.01 ERA and 9.1 strikeouts per nine innings. His best season was arguably 2007, when he went 11-8 with a 3.93 ERA in 32 starts, striking out 183 batters in 195 innings with the Cubs.

The 14 MLB teams Hill has played for are as follows:

Cubs (2005-08)Orioles (2009)Red Sox (2010-12, 2015, 2022, 2024)Guardians (2013)Angels (2014)Yankees (2014)Athletics (2016)Dodgers (2016-19)Twins (2020)Rays (2021)Mets (2021)Pirates (2023)Padres (2023)Royals (2025)

Rapper Ca$h Out attends day 2 of the 2012 BET Awards Radio Room held at The Shrine Auditorium on June 30, 2012 in Los Angeles, California.

Rapper Ca$h Out was sentenced to life in prison on Monday, July 21, after being convicted in a rape and racketeering case in Georgia, attorneys said.

The Atlanta-based rapper, whose legal name is John-Michael Gibson, was found guilty July 18, of charges including rape, aggravated sodomy and violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act for leading a prostitution enterprise, a spokesperson for the Fulton County District Attorney's Office told USA TODAY.

Gibson was also convicted of two counts of trafficking a person, pimping, pandering, keeping a place of prostitution, battery, possession of a firearm during commission of felony and other crimes, Fulton County media relations director Pallavi Bailey said.

He was found not guilty of felony aggravated assault, Gibson's defense Attorney Careton R. Matthews said.

During the trial, Matthews told USA TODAY he argued the state failed to prove its case, called some of the charges against him "overblown," and said testimony from the accusers showed they "voluntarily reconnected with Gibson and contradicted themselves repeatedly."

Gibson, who rose to fame more than a decade ago with hits including "Cashin' Out" and "She Twerkin," had been on trial since June 2 before Fulton County Superior Court Judge Melynee Leftridge.

Gibson's mother, Linda Smith, and his friend, Tyrone Taylor, were also convicted in connection to the case in which prosecutors told a 12-person jury they ran a business and lured victims into prostitution.

Before sentencing, the judge said evidence at trial had "shown the very worst of human behavior toward other human beings," local media outlet WXIA-TV reported. The judge said the verdict reflected prosecutors had "proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the diabolical conduct of the defendants occurred, and her sentence would be responsive to that."

The judge sentenced Gibson to life and an additional 70 years in connection to the case.

Smith was sentenced to 30 years for her crimes, and Taylor received the same sentence as Gibson, Matthews confirmed.

"We do respect the court's process and jury's decision, however we're disappointed with the verdict and the sentence," Matthews said Monday afternoon. "He maintains his innocence on many of these charges and may file an appeal or a motion for a new trial."

 • "Babe" Star James Cromwell Remembers Going Vegan on the 'Second Day of Filming'

James Cromwell in 'Babe'

Babe actor James Cromwell's time on the fictional farm transformed his way of eating.

The Succession star, 85, who played farmer Arthur Hoggett in the Oscar Award-winning 1995 children's movie, told The Guardian how just a few days on set made him opt for a plant-based diet.

"On the second day of filming, I broke for lunch before everybody else. All the animals I'd worked with that morning were on the table, cut up, fricasseed, roasted and seared. That was when I decided to become a vegan," he recalled in the July 21 article.

In the movie, Cromwell's character wins the titular pig and rather than eating the piglet, he chooses to show it at an upcoming fair. During this time, Babe bonds with fellow farm animals and learns to herd sheep.

Alamy

James Cromwell in 'Babe'

Cromwell described the cooperation and disobedience of a gaggle of ducks, sheep, border collies, horses and other farm animals (most of which were real despite one animatronic sheep and some puppets) behind the scenes of the heartwarming film.

He explained that a trainer worked with the sheep for "five months" trying to perfect the final scene. When the animals did as they were supposed to, the crowd of "extras we'd gathered from the local town – went berserk," Cromwell said.

According to Cromwell, viewers had similar dietary responses to the beloved movie. "The only negative thing I ever heard about Babe was from a woman who said it ruined her relationship with her daughter," he said. "They used to enjoy Big Macs together and now her daughter wouldn't eat animals. I thought: 'If that's what you based your relationship on, it sucks anyway!'"

The actor is a longtime animal activist and PETA advocate — in 2023, he even helped save a piglet (aptly named Babe) from slaughter.

"Having had the privilege of witnessing and experiencing pigs' intelligence and inquisitive personalities while filming the movie Babe changed my life and my way of eating, and so I jumped at the chance to save this real-life Babe," Cromwell said in a statement from PETA at the time. The pig was taken to an animal shelter, according to Cromwell.

'The Daily Show' gets new host amid late-night upheaval

-

 • 'The Daily Show' gets new host amid late-night upheaval

Anna Kaufman, USA TODAY July 22, 2025 at 12:32 AM

From Comedy Central's World News Headquarters in New York, it's "The Daily Show" with… wait, who is Josh Johnson?

The award-winning news comedy show, which propelled Jon Stewart to fame and saw him return as a one-day-a-week anchor in 2024, is adding a new rotating host to its lineup.

Johnson, who has been a writer on the show since 2017 and an onscreen presence since 2024, will take his first turn as a host this week, anchoring the July 22 show (11 p.m. ET/PT on Comedy Central). He will join the rotating cast of anchors who have helped to guide the program into a new format after host Trevor Noah (Stewart's first replacement) left the desk in 2022.

Other anchors include Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta and Desi Lydic.

Comedian Josh Johnson is joining "The Daily Show."

Jon Stewart questions fate of 'The Daily Show' amid merger as Colbert's 'Late Show' axed

Who is Josh Johnson?

Johnson, a fresh face with a healthy social media following, represents a new wave of comedians who win fans beyond traditional stand-up gigs and performances on the late-night circuit, adding internet fame into the mix.

He enters the hosting circuit at a perilous time for late-night programming, fresh off the heels of the cancellation of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," which shares parent company Paramount with "The Daily Show."

Colbert, an ex-"Daily Show" comic and Stewart disciple, announced Paramount's decision, which will axe not just his position but the entire CBS late-night show, during an episode last week. The decision, the company said in a statement, was "purely financial," while some in the industry have cast doubt on that claim, arguing instead that it may be the result of political kowtowing.

Paramount is seeking the FCC's approval for a proposed $8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media.

Days before "The Late Show's" sunsetting was announced, Colbert criticized Paramount for settling President Donald Trump's defamation lawsuit, calling the $16 million donation to Trump's future presidential library "a big fat bribe" to his administration that could help earn FCC approval for the merger.

Whether the ramifications of Colbert's cancellation will reach across channels to Comedy Central remains to be seen. "The Daily Show" caters to a slightly different, more politically wonky audience, while "The Late Show" was once known for its more entertainment-focused tone. Colbert brought a sharper, politically critical timbre.

Before Colbert's cancellation was even announced, though, Stewart said his spidey senses were activated.

During a July 17 episode of his podcast, the comedian said he's uncertain about the future of "The Daily Show" but knows it brings "value."

"They haven't called me and said, 'Don't get too comfortable in that office, Stewart.' But let me tell you something. I've been kicked out of" worse "establishments than that. We'll land on our feet," he continued.

"Without 'The Daily Show,' Comedy Central's kind of like Muzak at this point," he said. "I think we're the only sort of life that exists on a current basis, other than 'South Park.' I'd like to think we bring enough value to the property, like if they're looking at it as purely a real estate transaction, I think we bring a lot of value."

The actor played the only son of Bill Cosby's character, Heathcliff Huxtable, in the sitcom from 1984 to 1992.
