The death of an unarmed 52-year-old man who died after an Alabama police officer kneeled on his neck was ruled a homicide by a county coroner, according to an official autopsy reviewed by The . The finding led lawyers representing Phillip Reeder's family on Monday to compare his death to that of George Floyd in 2020.

The report issued by the Jefferson County medical examiner's office concludes Reeder, of Irondale, Alabama, died last August of heart failure "associated with cocaine use and restraint during altercation."

Officers in the Alabama suburb 10 miles (16 kilometers) from Birmingham were dispatched to a local highway just after 5 a.m. on August 6, 2024, after one of Reeder's colleagues called 911 to report a medical emergency, according to Reeder's wife, Sandra Lee Reeder. Phillip Reeder, who owned a construction company, was driving home from a job in Memphis, Tennessee, she said.

At the time, police said Reeder was wandering in and out of traffic when they approached him, according to AL.com.

Body camera video of Reeder's death has not been released publicly, but Sandra Lee Reeder and her attorneys said they reviewed it last week. A 2023 state law that governs release of police recordings says the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency may choose to not disclose the recording if it would affect an active law enforcement investigation.

An email seeking comment from the Irondale police chief was sent Monday morning.

Sandra Lee Reeder said that the body camera footage shows her husband running from police when they arrived. Police then shocked Reeder with a Taser, placed him in handcuffs and laid him on his stomach, she said. One officer put his knee on Reeder's neck for over three minutes, she said.

Sandra Lee Reeder said her husband can be heard saying "I can't breathe" three times.

The autopsy said Reed had multiple non-leathal wounds and bruising from the attempted arrest by the police. Sandra Lee Reeder said she could see he was bleeding from his face in the video.

Reeder was unresponsive when the officer rolled him over onto his back, according to the coroner's report. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital just after 6:30 a.m.

Harry Daniels, an attorney for the Reeder family, compared the fatality to the death of George Floyd in 2020, which prompted months of protests and widespread scrutiny over police tactics.

"This world was captivated and shocked about what happened in 2020 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 2024, the exact same thing happened," Daniels said at a news conference outside Irondale City Hall on Monday.

Daniels said that the only difference between what happened to Reeder and Floyd is race: Reeder was white and Floyd was Black. Reeder may have committed misdemeanor disorderly conduct by wandering into traffic, but "it is not warranted for a knee in the back — that is deadly force," he said.

Reeder's two sons said that they also reviewed the body camera video of their father's last moments this month after almost a year of asking the local police department and state agency for more information.

"What I have gone through these past 11 months should not happen to any 19-year-old," Zachariah Phillip Reeder said.

Is Chris Paul joining the best Clippers team of his career?

-

 • Is Chris Paul joining the best Clippers team of his career?

Morten Stig JensenJuly 22, 2025 at 12:16 AM

As he enters his 21st and final NBA season, Chris Paul has decided to spend it in Los Angeles with a team he's all too familiar with.

Paul is expected to sign with the Clippers, putting a period on what has been an absolutely tremendous offseason for the organization after acquiring John Collins, Brook Lopez and Bradley Beal as well.

Paul, who is now 40, just came off a year in San Antonio in which he started all 82 games, proving he's still very capable of being an impact player.

The point guard might have had pedestrian numbers (8.8 points and 7.4 assists per game) compared to his prime, but the stats only tell part of the story. He'll join a Clippers team where the ball will be in the hands of James Harden and Kawhi Leonard a fair bit, meaning he's likely to play a role that supports him being even more opportunistic in regard to establishing himself.

With Collins and Derrick Jones Jr. on the roster, Paul will have several lob targets at his disposal, just as he'll have shooters who can fill the wing in the form of Bogdan Bogdanović and Beal, who is likely to play a not insignificant amount of minutes alongside Paul.

The addition of Paul, in conjunction with the organization's other moves this summer, has catapulted the Clippers into contender status, at least assuming Leonard is as healthy as he looked in the playoffs against the Denver Nuggets.

The depth chart of the team is rather ridiculous as well. If we assume a starting lineup of Harden, Beal, Leonard, Collins and Ivica Zubac, the secondary rotation will consist of Paul, Bogdanović, Nicolas Batum, Jones and Lopez, forming one of the most potent 10-man rotations in the NBA.

Paul's leadership qualities might allow him to take the starting spot over Beal, but if so, the Clippers will only have an even stronger scoring punch on their second unit.

While this won't be at all similar to the Lob City version of the Clippers, with Paul feeding Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, there's a case to be made that this could be the best Clippers team Paul has ever been on.

Edward Segarra, USA TODAY July 21, 2025 at 5:17 AM

For Christie Brinkley, owning your truth is no bed of roses.

The model and former wife of Billy Joel, who got candid on her life and career in the new memoir "Uptown Girl," reflected on the making of the emotional book in a July 18 cover story for Social Life Magazine.

The book, which chronicles Brinkley's early modeling days and her tumultuous romances with Joel and ex-husband Peter Cook, is accompanied by an audiobook narrated by the Sports Illustrated alum herself.

"There were parts where I thought, 'Please, don't cry,'" Brinkley, 71, told the magazine. "I tried to keep (my voice) level, but (the publisher) let me be. Let my voice crack. Let it show."

Christie Brinkley memoir revelations: Model talks Billy Joel marriage, Peter Cook affair

Brinkley was married to Cook, an architect, from 1996 to 2008. The pair's relationship unraveled after Brinkley discovered Cook had cheated on her with an 18-year-old. The former couple shares a daughter, 27-year-old Sailor Lee Brinkley Cook.

Christie Brinkley, left, and Peter Cook arrive at the Bloomberg party following the annual White House Correspondents' dinner in Washington, D.C., on May 4, 2002.Christie Brinkley recalls Peter Cook affair, son's reaction

In "Uptown Girl," Brinkley writes that she learned about Cook's affair while giving a commencement speech at Southampton High School in 2006. After her speech, a man reportedly approached her and said: "That arrogant husband of yours has been having an affair with my teenage daughter, and he won't knock it off."

Brinkley's son Jack, whom she shares with ex-husband and real estate developer Richard Taubman, was in attendance at the graduation ceremony and allegedly observed the tense interaction.

"Jack's face was frozen in panic. He felt it instantly," Brinkley told Social Life Magazine. "He knew something was very wrong."

Brinkley told her son, then 11, that she needed to go to the police station, where the man who informed her of the affair worked, to assist "a girl who needed her help." It took four years before Brinkley and Cook concluded their media-frenzied court battle over custody of their kids.

Despite her marital woes, Brinkley remains optimistic about love, telling Fox News in an April interview that "love is the strongest thing in the whole world."

"I just feel like my life is so full of love," Brinkley told the outlet. "If there's a romantic love that comes along as well, it would be wonderful. But I also feel very content and happy with the life that I have right now, and I consider my life to be very full of love."

crusoe:These were kinda like wallets back then. The early form was a series of small oval trays suspened on coards, each oval had a hole in each end and the trays threaded over the cord, with it loop across the bottom of the last tray. There was also a oval lid on top. By loosening the top knot/slider/bead the trays could be separated. At the very end of the cord would be the netsuke, a very large bead. The inro cord was not tied around the sash/belt, but simply tucked under it, with the netsuke pulled through and sitting on top. Its size prevented the inro cord from simply falling out.Inside a man might put medication, powders, snuff, pills, flint and tinder for fire starting, whatever he might need. This one is possibly post the time Japan was opened up to the west, and instead of trays it has drawers. This was probably worn by a fairly well off man who at the time would be wearing a blend of western ( Often a hat and cane) and Japanese dress.

#13 Found This In An Elevator Shaft In An Old Hotel In Ireland. These Worth Anything?

ElbowDeepinanImgur:Hi OP! I restore these cash registers as a hobby! What you've got is a National Cash Register from around the 1910s. They're worth a couple hundred bucks in that condition, mostly because they can still be restored despite how bad it looks. There are collectors who make their own replacement key labels, cut new marble for the coin shelf, and source replacement original parts for the bits and bobs that have gone missing. A fully restored register like that one generally sells for between $700-900 depending on how well they're cleaned up. In all honesty, the brass is dirty but it looks like it's in great condition. Something you can do is pull the drawer completely out (there's a release rod in the back of the paper bill compartment) and flip it over. Oftentimes the receipt is still pasted to the underside, since this was a standard NCR practice. It will tell you the date it was purchased as well as the business or person who paid for it. Great bit of history!
