'I Give Up On This Organization,' 'No Longer Playing Around' - Fever Fans Divided By Indiana's Big Front Office Move After Amber Cox's Firing Tushar Bahl Fri, October 30, 2026 at 10:52 PM UTC · 3 min read About Our Ads Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement The Indiana Fever have hired Sheri Sam as assistant general manager, IndyStar's Chloe Peterson reported Friday, a week after the team fired general manager Amber Cox. The news drew a quick mix of optimism and doubt online.

The two-time WNBA champion starts Monday, and she will begin her job without a general manager in place.

Citing sources, Peterson reported that the hire fits a wider Fever effort to strengthen how the team scouts and evaluates players. Talks about Sam joining the organization began over the summer. Her focus will be scouting and analytics.

Sam gets to work right away. Her first immediate task will be scouting, with the women's college basketball season tipping off Sunday with a single overseas game before the full slate begins Monday

Pre-draft scouting and the evaluation of players were the focus of Sam's job in Portland. Before shifting to the front office, she spent 10 seasons playing in the WNBA, one of them with the Fever in 2007, and captured championships with Seattle in 2004 and Detroit in 2008.

Her credentials include an NBA CBA certification and an NYU certificate in global management, along with the human and organizational development degree she completed at Vanderbilt in 1996.

Several fans welcomed the move after a week of upheaval in Indianapolis. One fan wrote , "The Indiana Fever are no longer playing around."

Another fan was on board, writing , "Sheri Sam is scouting your next WNBA draft pick. She has a good resume from the Trail Blazers."

Another fan was more guarded. "2nd hire with a focus on scouting … hopefully thats a good sign," they wrote .

Not everyone bought in. One content creator pointed to the plan for Sam to scout the NCAA season and wrote , "They've learned NOTHING…"

The college work is only the short-term plan. Sam's main job will be working with the scouting and coaching staffs on personnel and talent identification.

Replying to other accounts, Fever writer Tony East wrote , "Certainly looks strange. I believe given the scouting oversight they wanted this done before NCAA really gets going."

"I give up on this organization," wrote another disappointed fan.

Sam's hire is the latest move in a front office shake-up that began Oct. 23, when team president Kelly Krauskopf stepped down hours before Cox was fired. Stephanie White remains head coach, and sources told ESPN's Alexa Philippou that day that she was expected to stay.

The shake-up came after a 28-16 season. Indiana had the highest-scoring offense in league history, and Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston were all named All-Stars.

Even so, the Fever were the No. 6 seed for a third straight year and lost to the Las Vegas Aces in the first round. A year earlier, Indiana reached the semifinals before losing Game 5 in overtime. Across Cox's two seasons as GM, the Fever went 52-36.

The Fever have yet to set a specific timeline for hiring their next general manager.
