Grading Auburn in its loss to LSU A. Stacy Long, The Decatur Daily, Ala. Offense — H: Horrible, horrendous, hideous. Take your pick. LSU doubled Auburn's yardage in Saturday's 38-17 blistering. Doubled. Your final count: 552-271. Auburn gave up seven sacks, and quarterback Byrum Brown still had the team high in rushing yards. With 21. Yes, 21. On 19 carries. Auburn can warm itself with positive thoughts of that last-minute meaningless touchdown. Auburn lost by only 21. And that late score will get Auburn some publicity on ESPN on Monday. On Bad Beats.
Defense — JK: For just kidding, which may be an apt description for Auburn's defense Saturday. The only way LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt could have been better may have been in a practice. Or in his backyard. Same goes for receiver Jackson Harris, who took a few strolls in the Jordan-Hare park to the tune of nine catches for 178 yards with touchdowns of 10 and 70 yards. Leavitt was 32-of-45 for 387 yards and three touchdowns. Auburn amassed the grand total of two tackles for loss. About the only suspense by the middle of the fourth was if LSU would reach 600 yards, a number last dropped on Auburn in 2013.
Special teams — C: Hudson Kaak was the unquestioned star for Auburn, far and away better than second place, which was kicker Alex McPherson. Hosannas, hosannas to those two. It was that kind of day. Kaak averaged 48.7 yards on his six kicks with a long of 69. Kudos, sir. McPherson hit his one field goal, but it was from a measly 23 yards, which reflects poorly on the offense.
Coaching — U: As in utter humiliation. Any positive signs Auburn showed last week at Georgia stayed east of the Chattahoochee River.
Overall — F: Hey, did you know that Auburn beat Georgia a week ago? So much for that momentum. Toomer's Corner trees won't have any issues this week, and the lemonade may have a sour tinge. The tissue will be used elsewhere to wipe away tears and the fetid stench of Auburn's "effort" against LSU.
