A woman secretly spent $100,000 of money meant for her and her spouse's future, the spouse claimed on Reddit

The spouse divorced her as a result and now wonders if they overreacted in doing so

"I can't stop thinking about what our future would've looked like — now it's just a closet full of overpriced fabric," the spouse wrote

After a woman secretly spent $100,000 on designer fashion, her spouse filed for divorce. Now, they're wondering if the split was an overreaction.

Still reeling from their wife's "shopping addiction," the spouse shared their side of the events that led the marriage to implode on Reddit. More specifically, they shared a post in the "AmIOverreacting" forum, where they asked fellow users if they went too far in filing for a divorce.

The couple "got lucky with an inheritance and parlay" that "was supposed to be our future - house down payment, retirement, you know, adult s---," the spouse wrote. But their wife had other purchases in mind.

"Instead," they said in the post, "she went full shopaholic."

Photodjo/Getty

A stock image of a couple arguing

Their definition of "full shopaholic?" She spent $100,000 of the inheritance in two years, and kept her purchases hidden throughout. "At first I didn't even notice," the spouse wrote. "She'd come home with new stuff and I'd be like 'cool new dress' without thinking much about it. Then the credit card bills started rolling in."

The spouse tried to intervene, they claimed in the post. "We had a talk," they wrote. "Then another. Then therapy." But, in the end, "Nothing worked."

Still, they stuck around — until yet another one of the wife's secrets came to light. "The final straw," the spouse wrote, "was finding out she had a secret storage unit just for all the clothes that wouldn't fit in our closet anymore. Some still had tags on!"

The issue, per the spouse, was not that their wife spent the money — it was the fact that the money was meant for their future together. "I'm not controlling - she can spend her own money however she wants. But this was OUR future she was literally wearing away," the spouse wrote. "We're talking $4k purses, designer shoes she wore once, custom s--- I can't even pronounce."

"I tried everything before going nuclear," they continued. "But when I suggested selling some of it to recoup losses, she had a complete meltdown."

Getty

A stock image of a person holding shopping bags

Now, the spouse has filed for divorce. Their wife is "staying with her sister who thinks I'm the devil," they wrote in the post.

Given that the spouse's parents can't even agree on whether they made the right choice — their dad is supportive, while their mom "says 'in sickness and health' includes shopping addiction" — they decided to ask Reddit users to weigh in, they said.

"She keeps texting that she'll change, but I just don't believe it anymore," they wrote. "And honestly, the trust is gone. I can't stop thinking about what our future would've looked like - now it's just a closet full of overpriced fabric."

"So," they concluded the post, "am I [overreacting] for walking away from someone who couldn't stop shopping even when it destroyed our future?"

— sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

In response, users echoed the spouse's story, recalling other situations in which shopping addiction caused relationships to end. Several others said that because the spouse failed to mention the source of the "inheritance," they are unable to properly assess the situation.

Getty

A stock image of a couple arguing

Meanwhile, the top-voted comment declared that if the spouse, as they stated in the original post, feels that they cannot trust their wife anymore, "the relationship is," in fact, "over."

"Yeah man, trust is definitely the thing I can't get past. After finding that storage unit, it's like I don't even know who she is anymore," the spouse wrote in response. "She swears she'll change but also gets defensive when I mention selling anything. Classic addict behavior I guess?"

"The thing that kills me is imagining what that money could've been. Our first house. Travel. Maybe even kids someday. Now it's just... clothes. And debt," they continued, adding that they "appreciate the straight talk."

"Sometimes," they finished, "you need internet strangers to confirm you're not crazy."

House Republicans grasp for response to demands for transparency in Epstein case

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans were grasping late Thursday to formulate a response to the Trump administration's handling of records in the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking case, ultimately putting forward a resolution that carries no legal weight but nodded to the growing demand for greater transparency.

The House resolution, which could potentially be voted on next week, will do practically nothing to force the Justice Department to release more records in the case. Still, it showed how backlash from the Republican base is putting pressure on the Trump administration and roiling GOP lawmakers.

The House was held up for hours Thursday from final consideration of President Donald Trump's request for about $9 billion in government funding cuts because GOP leaders were trying to respond to demands from their own ranks that they weigh in on the Epstein files. In the late evening they settled on the resolution as an attempt to simultaneously placate calls from the far-right for greater transparency and satisfy President Donald Trump, who has called the issue a "hoax" that his supporters should forget about.

Yet the House resolution was the latest demonstration of how practically no one is moving on from Attorney General Pam Bondi's promises to publicly release documents related to Epstein. Since he was found dead in his New York jail cell in August 2019 following his arrest on sex trafficking charges, the well-connected financier has loomed large among conservatives and conspiracy theorists who have now lashed out at Trump and Bondi for declining to release more files in the case.

"The House Republicans are for transparency, and they're looking for a way to say that they agree with the White House. We agree with the president. Everything he said about that, all the credible evidence should come out," House Speaker Mike Johnson said Thursday afternoon.

Democrats vehemently decried the resolution's lack of force. They have advanced their own legislation, with support from nine Republicans, that would require the Justice Department to release more information on the case.

Rep. Jim McGovern, who led the Democrats' debate against the Republican resolution Thursday night, called it a "glorified press release" and "a fig leaf so they can move on from this issue."

Under pressure from his own GOP members, Johnson had to demonstrate action on the Epstein files or risk having Republicans support the Democratic measures that would force the release of nearly all documents.

"The American people simply the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth," House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said at a news conference. "Democrats didn't put this into the public domain. The conspiracy theory provocateur-in-chief Donald Trump is the one, along with his extreme MAGA Republican associates, who put this whole thing into the public domain for years. And now they are reaping what they have sown."

Still, Democrats, who hold minorities in both chambers, have relished the opportunity to make Republicans repeatedly block their attempts to force the Justice Department to release the documents.

Trump in recent years has suggested he would release more information about the investigation into Epstein, especially amid speculation over a supposed list of Epstein's clients.

In February, the Justice Department released some government documents regarding the case, but there were no new revelations. After a months-long review of additional evidence, the department earlier this month released a video meant to prove that Epstein killed himself, but said no other files related to the case would be made public.

A White House spokeswoman said Thursday that Trump would not recommend a special counsel in the case. But later Thursday, the president said he had asked Bondi to seek the release of testimony from grand jury proceedings in the case.

Rep. Ro Khanna, a California Democrat, said that process would likely only produce limited information, but added that it showed that "the president is hearing the American people."

Trump's name on 2003 birthday letter to Epstein, Wall Street Journal reports

-

 • Trump's name on 2003 birthday letter to Epstein, Wall Street Journal reports

July 18, 2025 at 4:43 AM

(Corrects paragraph 14 to say 'after,' not 'before' book was compiled)

(Reuters) -Donald Trump's name appeared on a risque 2003 personal note to Jeffrey Epstein, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. The president responded that the letter was fake.

The Journal reported that the letter was one of several included in a leather-bound album meant to celebrate Epstein's 50th birthday, about three years before sex-abuse allegations emerged against the financier.

Reuters could not immediately confirm the authenticity of the letter.

Trump quickly responded to the story on his Truth Social platform, saying he would sue the newspaper and Rupert Murdoch, who controls its publisher, News Corp.

"The Wall Street Journal, and Rupert Murdoch, personally, were warned directly by President Donald J. Trump that the supposed letter they printed by President Trump to Epstein was a FAKE and, if they print it, they will be sued," Trump wrote. "President Trump will be suing The Wall Street Journal, NewsCorp, and Mr. Murdoch, shortly."

A spokesperson for the Wall Street Journal and its parent company, Dow Jones & Co, declined to comment on its story or Trump's threat to sue. Representatives for News Corp and Murdoch could not immediately be reached for comment.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

The White House has been roiled by questions about disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Epstein, after the Justice Department this month concluded that there was no evidence to support a number of long-held conspiracy theories about his clients and 2019 death in prison.

Attorney General Pam Bondi had pledged months earlier to reveal major revelations about Epstein, including "a lot of names" and "a lot of flight logs."

Some Trump supporters have demanded the release of more information on Epstein, causing a rare fracture within his base of support. Trump has pushed back.

"It's all been a big hoax," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday, as calls increased for the release of more information on Epstein's clients.

The Journal said the letter, bearing Trump's name, contains several lines of typewritten text framed by the outline of a naked woman, which appeared to be hand-drawn with a heavy marker. The newspaper said the letter concludes "Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret," and featured the signature "Donald."

Vice President JD Vance responded to the story on X, saying, "Forgive my language but this story is complete and utter bullshit. The WSJ should be ashamed for publishing it."

Allegations that Epstein had been sexually abusing girls became public in 2006 - after the birthday book was compiled - and he was arrested that year before accepting a plea deal. Epstein died in 2019 in jail after he was arrested a second time and charged with sex-trafficking conspiracy.

'Fear is the tool of a tyrant', fired federal prosecutor Maurene Comey tells colleagues

-

 • 'Fear is the tool of a tyrant', fired federal prosecutor Maurene Comey tells colleagues

ERIC TUCKER and ALANNA DURKIN RICHER July 17, 2025 at 6:12 PM

FILE - Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurene Comey is outside court during the Sean "Diddy" Combs' sex trafficking trial, June 3, 2025. (AP Photo/Ted Shaffrey, File)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Maurene Comey, the daughter of former FBI director James Comey who as a federal prosecutor in Manhattan worked on cases against Sean "Diddy" Combs and Jeffrey Epstein, said in a note to colleagues that "fear is the tool of a tyrant" and that her firing without reason should fuel "a fire of righteous indignation at abuses of power."

"If a career prosecutor can be fired without reason, fear may seep into the decisions of those who remain," Comey said in the note, which was obtained by The on Thursday. "Do not let that happen. Fear is the tool of a tyrant, wielded to suppress independent thought."

"Instead of fear," she added, "let this moment fuel the fire that already burns at the heart of this place. A fire of righteous indignation at abuses of power. Of commitment to seek justice for victims. Of dedication to truth above all else."

Until her firing Wednesday, Comey had been a veteran lawyer in the Southern District of New York, long considered the most elite of the Justice Department's prosecution offices. Her cases included the sex trafficking prosecution of Epstein, who killed himself behind bars in 2019 as he was awaiting trial, and the recent case against Combs, which ended earlier this month with a mixed verdict.

Her termination represented the latest Justice Department effort to fire lawyers without explanation, a trend that has raised alarm over a disregard for civil service protections designed to remove attorneys for political reasons. The department has also fired a number of prosecutors who worked on cases that have provoked Donald Trump's ire, including some who handled U.S. Capitol riot cases and lawyers and support staff who worked on special counsel Jack Smith's prosecutions of the Republican president.

She was long seen as a potential target given her father's fraught relationship over the last decade with Donald Trump. The Justice Department recently appeared to acknowledge the existence of an investigation into James Comey, though the basis for that inquiry is unclear.

Asked about the firing Thursday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, "This was a decision made by the Department of Justice."

Maurene Comey had most recently been among the prosecutors in the sex trafficking and racketeering case against Combs. The hip-hop mogul was acquitted of the main charges but convicted of lesser prostitution-related offenses that may result in a prison sentence of just a few years, an outcome seen by some as a rare defeat for prosecutions.

But she was successful in numerous other prosecutions, most notably helping secure the conviction of Ghislaine Maxwell on sex trafficking charges for helping financier Epstein sexually abuse underage girls. In that case, she delivered a rebuttal argument during closings, as she did in the Combs case.

Her firing comes as Attorney General Pam Bondi faces intense criticism from some members of Trump's base for the Justice Department's decision not to release any more evidence in the government's possession from Epstein's sex trafficking investigation. Some right-wing internet personalities, like Laura Loomer, who have been critical of Bondi's handling of the Epstein files, had been calling for Maurene Comey's firing.

James Comey was the FBI director when Trump took office in 2017, having been appointed by then-President Barack Obama, a Democrat, and serving before that as a senior Justice Department official in Republican President George W. Bush's administration.

But his relationship with Trump was strained from the start. The FBI director resisted a request by Trump at a private dinner to pledge personal loyalty to the president — an overture that so unnerved the FBI director that he documented it in a contemporaneous memorandum.

Trump soon after fired Comey amid an investigation into potential ties between Russia and Trump's presidential campaign. That inquiry, later taken over by special counsel Robert Mueller, would ultimately find that while Russia interfered with the 2016 election and the Trump team welcomed the help, there was insufficient evidence to prove a criminal collaboration.

Trump's fury at the older Comey continued long after firing him from the bureau, blaming him for a "hoax" and "witch hunt" that shadowed much of his first term.

Comey disclosed contemporaneous memos of his conversations with Trump to a friend so that their content could be revealed to the media. The following year, Comey published a book calling Trump "ego driven" and likening him to a mafia don. Trump, for his part, has accused Comey and other officials of treason.

MLB awards update: Checking in on MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year races at the season's midway point

-

 • MLB awards update: Checking in on MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year races at the season's midway point

Jake MintzJuly 17, 2025 at 11:45 PM

With the second half of the MLB regular season beginning Friday and a little more than two months of baseball left to play before October, it's the perfect time to take stock of the awards races.

Here's the latest on the MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year races in the American League and National League, with the top three contenders for each piece of hardware as the second half begins.

American League MVP1. Aaron Judge, Yankees2. Cal Raleigh, Mariners3. Tarik Skubal, Tigers

Cal Raleigh was the talk of All-Star week. He won the Home Run Derby in emphatic fashion alongside his whole family. Nobody could stop talking about his butt or the fact that he entered the break with 38 home runs as a gosh-darn catcher.

And yet, this is still Aaron Judge's award to lose. The Yankees' captain, who has won two of the past three AL MVP awards, is in the middle of his best offensive season yet. Judge is currently on pace for 12.3 WAR, according to FanGraphs. If he pulls that off, it would be the most valuable season since Barry Bonds in 2002. Take out Bonds, and you have to go all the way back to 1927 with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.

That said, there's a world in which Raleigh chases down Judge, something that seemed impossible a few months ago. He has already delivered a historic offensive season for a catcher while providing borderline elite defense behind the dish. If Raleigh maintains this level and Judge tails off just a little, the Big Dumper has a chance.

Behind those two, it's a hodgepodge on the offensive side, so I'll put Skubal at No. 3. A pitcher (non-Ohtani division) hasn't finished top-three in MVP voting since Clayton Kershaw won the NL award in 2014. But Skubal is, unequivocally, the best pitcher on planet Earth, and he might be able to take advantage of a relative down year from Bobby Witt Jr. to sneak his way in as a finalist.

Dark horses: Bobby Witt Jr., Jeremy Peña, Byron Buxton, José Ramírez

Can anyone overtake Aaron Judge or Shohei Ohtani for this year's MVP? (Jonathan Castro/Yahoo Sports) (Jonathan Castro/Yahoo Sports)National League MVP1. Shohei Ohtani, Dodgers2. Pete Crow-Armstrong, Cubs3. Juan Soto, Mets

Now that Ohtani is, you know, pitching and hitting at the same time again, it's going to be hard to deny the man his fourth consecutive MVP award. Statistically, Ohtani's bat has taken a small step back from last year, when he went 50/50, hit .310 and finished with an adjusted OPS 86% better than league average. This season, he's hitting "only" .276 and is on pace for "only" 54 home runs and 20 steals. But his return to the mound — he has allowed one run in nine innings across five outings so far — is the obvious difference-maker.

Based on performance thus far, second place has to be Crow-Armstrong. The young, gregarious Cubs center fielder has exploded onto the scene this season with an exhilarating power-speed combo. PCA would be a game-changer even if he were a bad hitter; that's how good his glove is in center. Instead, he has taken a massive step forward with the bat this season, and his 25 home runs are tied for fourth in the National League.

Third, I've got non-All-Star Juan Soto, but a number of other players would've been perfectly defensible. Soto's overall numbers — which caused his snubbage from the All-Star Game — remain anchored by his uncharacteristically slow start. Those struggles also appear to have been remedied, as Soto has been on fire the past two months. I expect him to keep cooking.

Dark horses: Will Smith, Kyle Tucker, James Wood, Pete Alonso

AL Cy Young1. Tarik Skubal, Tigers2. Garrett Crochet, Red Sox3. Hunter Brown, Astros

Statistically, this is closer than you'd think, given Skubal's continued ascension to Best Pitcher On Earth status. Crochet actually had more innings and more strikeouts than his fellow southpaw (in one more start) in the first half. They have identical 2.23 ERAs. And Skubal has Crochet handled in regard to free passes (16 walks to 34).

Right now, Skubal gets the edge because leading qualified starters in both walk rate and strikeout rate is absolutely outrageous. In many other seasons, Brown might challenge for the top spot, but this feels like a two-horse race. Still, keep an eye on Jacob deGrom; his strikeout numbers have ticked up over the course of the year as he continues to ramp back up.

Dark horses: Jacob deGrom, Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, Kris Bubic

NL Cy Young1. Zack Wheeler, Phillies2. Paul Skenes, Pirates3. Logan Webb, Giants

Another two-man showdown, this one pits the young buck against the old dog. Wheeler has the edge in innings per start, WHIP, strikeout rate and walk rate. Skenes has him beat on ERA and home run rate. In another era, Skenes having just four wins might tank his Cy Young case, but today's awards voters won't hold Pittsburgh's embarrassing offense against him.

I think this ends up being extremely close between two extremely deserving candidates. But Wheeler gets the tiebreaker, fair or not, because he's the best pitcher of this era to never win a Cy Young, and Skenes should have ample time to get his.

Dark horses: Robbie Ray, Christopher Sánchez, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Matthew Boyd

AL Rookie of the Year1. Jacob Wilson, A's2. Nick Kurtz, A's3. Carlos Narváez, Red Sox

A battle between teammates in Yolo County! The A's stink, but their offense has some exciting pieces to build around. Wilson surprisingly beat Bobby Witt Jr. in All-Star fan voting, becoming the first rookie in MLB history to start at shortstop in the Midsummer Classic. He has the second-best batting average in baseball behind Judge and is playing sufficient defense at the most crucial infield spot.

Kurtz is the only AL rookie with a higher OPS and more homers than Wilson. The towering slugger has played 29 fewer games than his teammate, so the gap between the two could close over time.

Dark horses: Roman Anthony, Cam Smith, Noah Cameron, Jasson Domínguez

NL Rookie of the Year1. Drake Baldwin, Braves2. Jacob Misiorowski, Brewers3. Hyeseong Kim, Dodgers

Baldwin leads all NL rookie position players in batting average, OPS and fWAR. He has also been an average defensive player, which is very, very impressive for a first-year catcher. The biggest thing holding Baldwin back is that he's essentially splitting catching duties with Sean Murphy, and Atlanta's DH spot is clogged up by the plodding Marcel Ozuna. A Murphy trade at the deadline might give Baldwin a stronger path to this NL award.

Misiorowski has made just five starts — did you hear he made the All-Star Game? — but he has been so good in those outings while flashing so much potential that it's hard not to consider him for NL ROY. At this pace, he'll finish with around 18 starts, which might be enough in a relatively weak field if he keeps blowing people's doors off.

Dark horses: Caleb Durbin, Cade Horton, Augustin Ramírez, Isaac Collins

Carl Weathers and Adam Sandler in 'Happy Gilmore'

The late Carl Weathers costarred with Adam Sandler in 1996's Happy Gilmore

Before Weathers' death in February 2025, he had a "massive part" in the upcoming sequel, Sandler told Collider

"We had to rewrite a lot of the stuff, and even what the story was," said the writer-star

Carl Weathers was to feature significantly in Happy Gilmore 2 before he passed away, according to Adam Sandler.

The star and co-writer of the Happy Gilmore sequel told Collider in a recent interview that Weathers' death made for a "painful change" in the new movie's development.

"Carl Weathers had a massive part," Sandler, 58, confirmed. Weathers, who died at age 76 on Feb. 1, 2024, played the one-handed Derick "Chubbs" Peterson — mentor to Sandler's titular hockey player-turned-golfer — in the 1996 sports comedy.

"I would talk to Carl, and we were excited, and then Carl passed away," continued the Uncut Gems star. "We had to rewrite a lot of the stuff, and even what the story was. We made a lot of nice references to how great Chubbs was in the movie. That was the biggest change."

Jesse Grant/Getty

Carl Weathers in 2022

In the first movie, Weathers' character met a comical demise (by falling out of a window after Happy surprised him with the body of the alligator who bit off his hand) and later made an appearance from heaven.

Earlier drafts of Sandler and co-writer Tim Herlihy's Happy Gilmore 2 script involved an emotional arc for the deceased Chubbs, per Collider. "In the first version that we came up with, he had a son," said Sandler. "He was coming back to me a lot in my dreams, and he had a son who was mad at Happy for causing the death of daddy."

Director Kyle Newacheck told the outlet in April that his team couldn't "make Happy Gilmore without Chubbs Peterson." He added that fans "can be assured his spirit is throughout the [sequel]. He may not be by Happy's side anymore, but he's on his shoulder."

After the Rocky star's death in February, Sandler published a tribute to his Happy Gilmore costar on social media.

"A true great man. Great dad. Great actor. Great athlete. So much fun to be around always," he wrote on Instagram. "Smart as hell. Loyal as hell. Funny as hell. Loved his sons more than anything. What a guy!! Everyone loved him. My wife and I had the best times with him every time we saw him."

"Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life," Weathers' family said in a statement after his death. "Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner and friend."

Happy Gilmore 2 will be released on Netflix on July 25. Returning cast members Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller and Dennis Dugan are joined by a list of newcomers that includes Travis Kelce and Bad Bunny.
