WASHINGTON (AP) — Maurene Comey, the daughter of former FBI director James Comey who as a federal prosecutor in Manhattan worked on cases against Sean "Diddy" Combs and Jeffrey Epstein, said in a note to colleagues that "fear is the tool of a tyrant" and that her firing without reason should fuel "a fire of righteous indignation at abuses of power."

"If a career prosecutor can be fired without reason, fear may seep into the decisions of those who remain," Comey said in the note, which was obtained by The on Thursday. "Do not let that happen. Fear is the tool of a tyrant, wielded to suppress independent thought."

"Instead of fear," she added, "let this moment fuel the fire that already burns at the heart of this place. A fire of righteous indignation at abuses of power. Of commitment to seek justice for victims. Of dedication to truth above all else."

Until her firing Wednesday, Comey had been a veteran lawyer in the Southern District of New York, long considered the most elite of the Justice Department's prosecution offices. Her cases included the sex trafficking prosecution of Epstein, who killed himself behind bars in 2019 as he was awaiting trial, and the recent case against Combs, which ended earlier this month with a mixed verdict.

Her termination represented the latest Justice Department effort to fire lawyers without explanation, a trend that has raised alarm over a disregard for civil service protections designed to remove attorneys for political reasons. The department has also fired a number of prosecutors who worked on cases that have provoked Donald Trump's ire, including some who handled U.S. Capitol riot cases and lawyers and support staff who worked on special counsel Jack Smith's prosecutions of the Republican president.

She was long seen as a potential target given her father's fraught relationship over the last decade with Donald Trump. The Justice Department recently appeared to acknowledge the existence of an investigation into James Comey, though the basis for that inquiry is unclear.

Asked about the firing Thursday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, "This was a decision made by the Department of Justice."

Maurene Comey had most recently been among the prosecutors in the sex trafficking and racketeering case against Combs. The hip-hop mogul was acquitted of the main charges but convicted of lesser prostitution-related offenses that may result in a prison sentence of just a few years, an outcome seen by some as a rare defeat for prosecutions.

But she was successful in numerous other prosecutions, most notably helping secure the conviction of Ghislaine Maxwell on sex trafficking charges for helping financier Epstein sexually abuse underage girls. In that case, she delivered a rebuttal argument during closings, as she did in the Combs case.

Her firing comes as Attorney General Pam Bondi faces intense criticism from some members of Trump's base for the Justice Department's decision not to release any more evidence in the government's possession from Epstein's sex trafficking investigation. Some right-wing internet personalities, like Laura Loomer, who have been critical of Bondi's handling of the Epstein files, had been calling for Maurene Comey's firing.

James Comey was the FBI director when Trump took office in 2017, having been appointed by then-President Barack Obama, a Democrat, and serving before that as a senior Justice Department official in Republican President George W. Bush's administration.

But his relationship with Trump was strained from the start. The FBI director resisted a request by Trump at a private dinner to pledge personal loyalty to the president — an overture that so unnerved the FBI director that he documented it in a contemporaneous memorandum.

Trump soon after fired Comey amid an investigation into potential ties between Russia and Trump's presidential campaign. That inquiry, later taken over by special counsel Robert Mueller, would ultimately find that while Russia interfered with the 2016 election and the Trump team welcomed the help, there was insufficient evidence to prove a criminal collaboration.

Trump's fury at the older Comey continued long after firing him from the bureau, blaming him for a "hoax" and "witch hunt" that shadowed much of his first term.

Comey disclosed contemporaneous memos of his conversations with Trump to a friend so that their content could be revealed to the media. The following year, Comey published a book calling Trump "ego driven" and likening him to a mafia don. Trump, for his part, has accused Comey and other officials of treason.

MLB awards update: Checking in on MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year races at the season's midway point

-

 • MLB awards update: Checking in on MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year races at the season's midway point

Jake MintzJuly 17, 2025 at 11:45 PM

With the second half of the MLB regular season beginning Friday and a little more than two months of baseball left to play before October, it's the perfect time to take stock of the awards races.

Here's the latest on the MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year races in the American League and National League, with the top three contenders for each piece of hardware as the second half begins.

American League MVP1. Aaron Judge, Yankees2. Cal Raleigh, Mariners3. Tarik Skubal, Tigers

Cal Raleigh was the talk of All-Star week. He won the Home Run Derby in emphatic fashion alongside his whole family. Nobody could stop talking about his butt or the fact that he entered the break with 38 home runs as a gosh-darn catcher.

And yet, this is still Aaron Judge's award to lose. The Yankees' captain, who has won two of the past three AL MVP awards, is in the middle of his best offensive season yet. Judge is currently on pace for 12.3 WAR, according to FanGraphs. If he pulls that off, it would be the most valuable season since Barry Bonds in 2002. Take out Bonds, and you have to go all the way back to 1927 with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.

That said, there's a world in which Raleigh chases down Judge, something that seemed impossible a few months ago. He has already delivered a historic offensive season for a catcher while providing borderline elite defense behind the dish. If Raleigh maintains this level and Judge tails off just a little, the Big Dumper has a chance.

Behind those two, it's a hodgepodge on the offensive side, so I'll put Skubal at No. 3. A pitcher (non-Ohtani division) hasn't finished top-three in MVP voting since Clayton Kershaw won the NL award in 2014. But Skubal is, unequivocally, the best pitcher on planet Earth, and he might be able to take advantage of a relative down year from Bobby Witt Jr. to sneak his way in as a finalist.

Dark horses: Bobby Witt Jr., Jeremy Peña, Byron Buxton, José Ramírez

Can anyone overtake Aaron Judge or Shohei Ohtani for this year's MVP? (Jonathan Castro/Yahoo Sports) (Jonathan Castro/Yahoo Sports)National League MVP1. Shohei Ohtani, Dodgers2. Pete Crow-Armstrong, Cubs3. Juan Soto, Mets

Now that Ohtani is, you know, pitching and hitting at the same time again, it's going to be hard to deny the man his fourth consecutive MVP award. Statistically, Ohtani's bat has taken a small step back from last year, when he went 50/50, hit .310 and finished with an adjusted OPS 86% better than league average. This season, he's hitting "only" .276 and is on pace for "only" 54 home runs and 20 steals. But his return to the mound — he has allowed one run in nine innings across five outings so far — is the obvious difference-maker.

Based on performance thus far, second place has to be Crow-Armstrong. The young, gregarious Cubs center fielder has exploded onto the scene this season with an exhilarating power-speed combo. PCA would be a game-changer even if he were a bad hitter; that's how good his glove is in center. Instead, he has taken a massive step forward with the bat this season, and his 25 home runs are tied for fourth in the National League.

Third, I've got non-All-Star Juan Soto, but a number of other players would've been perfectly defensible. Soto's overall numbers — which caused his snubbage from the All-Star Game — remain anchored by his uncharacteristically slow start. Those struggles also appear to have been remedied, as Soto has been on fire the past two months. I expect him to keep cooking.

Dark horses: Will Smith, Kyle Tucker, James Wood, Pete Alonso

AL Cy Young1. Tarik Skubal, Tigers2. Garrett Crochet, Red Sox3. Hunter Brown, Astros

Statistically, this is closer than you'd think, given Skubal's continued ascension to Best Pitcher On Earth status. Crochet actually had more innings and more strikeouts than his fellow southpaw (in one more start) in the first half. They have identical 2.23 ERAs. And Skubal has Crochet handled in regard to free passes (16 walks to 34).

Right now, Skubal gets the edge because leading qualified starters in both walk rate and strikeout rate is absolutely outrageous. In many other seasons, Brown might challenge for the top spot, but this feels like a two-horse race. Still, keep an eye on Jacob deGrom; his strikeout numbers have ticked up over the course of the year as he continues to ramp back up.

Dark horses: Jacob deGrom, Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, Kris Bubic

NL Cy Young1. Zack Wheeler, Phillies2. Paul Skenes, Pirates3. Logan Webb, Giants

Another two-man showdown, this one pits the young buck against the old dog. Wheeler has the edge in innings per start, WHIP, strikeout rate and walk rate. Skenes has him beat on ERA and home run rate. In another era, Skenes having just four wins might tank his Cy Young case, but today's awards voters won't hold Pittsburgh's embarrassing offense against him.

I think this ends up being extremely close between two extremely deserving candidates. But Wheeler gets the tiebreaker, fair or not, because he's the best pitcher of this era to never win a Cy Young, and Skenes should have ample time to get his.

Dark horses: Robbie Ray, Christopher Sánchez, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Matthew Boyd

AL Rookie of the Year1. Jacob Wilson, A's2. Nick Kurtz, A's3. Carlos Narváez, Red Sox

A battle between teammates in Yolo County! The A's stink, but their offense has some exciting pieces to build around. Wilson surprisingly beat Bobby Witt Jr. in All-Star fan voting, becoming the first rookie in MLB history to start at shortstop in the Midsummer Classic. He has the second-best batting average in baseball behind Judge and is playing sufficient defense at the most crucial infield spot.

Kurtz is the only AL rookie with a higher OPS and more homers than Wilson. The towering slugger has played 29 fewer games than his teammate, so the gap between the two could close over time.

Dark horses: Roman Anthony, Cam Smith, Noah Cameron, Jasson Domínguez

NL Rookie of the Year1. Drake Baldwin, Braves2. Jacob Misiorowski, Brewers3. Hyeseong Kim, Dodgers

Baldwin leads all NL rookie position players in batting average, OPS and fWAR. He has also been an average defensive player, which is very, very impressive for a first-year catcher. The biggest thing holding Baldwin back is that he's essentially splitting catching duties with Sean Murphy, and Atlanta's DH spot is clogged up by the plodding Marcel Ozuna. A Murphy trade at the deadline might give Baldwin a stronger path to this NL award.

Misiorowski has made just five starts — did you hear he made the All-Star Game? — but he has been so good in those outings while flashing so much potential that it's hard not to consider him for NL ROY. At this pace, he'll finish with around 18 starts, which might be enough in a relatively weak field if he keeps blowing people's doors off.

Dark horses: Caleb Durbin, Cade Horton, Augustin Ramírez, Isaac Collins

Carl Weathers and Adam Sandler in 'Happy Gilmore'

The late Carl Weathers costarred with Adam Sandler in 1996's Happy Gilmore

Before Weathers' death in February 2025, he had a "massive part" in the upcoming sequel, Sandler told Collider

"We had to rewrite a lot of the stuff, and even what the story was," said the writer-star

Carl Weathers was to feature significantly in Happy Gilmore 2 before he passed away, according to Adam Sandler.

The star and co-writer of the Happy Gilmore sequel told Collider in a recent interview that Weathers' death made for a "painful change" in the new movie's development.

"Carl Weathers had a massive part," Sandler, 58, confirmed. Weathers, who died at age 76 on Feb. 1, 2024, played the one-handed Derick "Chubbs" Peterson — mentor to Sandler's titular hockey player-turned-golfer — in the 1996 sports comedy.

"I would talk to Carl, and we were excited, and then Carl passed away," continued the Uncut Gems star. "We had to rewrite a lot of the stuff, and even what the story was. We made a lot of nice references to how great Chubbs was in the movie. That was the biggest change."

Jesse Grant/Getty

Carl Weathers in 2022

In the first movie, Weathers' character met a comical demise (by falling out of a window after Happy surprised him with the body of the alligator who bit off his hand) and later made an appearance from heaven.

Earlier drafts of Sandler and co-writer Tim Herlihy's Happy Gilmore 2 script involved an emotional arc for the deceased Chubbs, per Collider. "In the first version that we came up with, he had a son," said Sandler. "He was coming back to me a lot in my dreams, and he had a son who was mad at Happy for causing the death of daddy."

Director Kyle Newacheck told the outlet in April that his team couldn't "make Happy Gilmore without Chubbs Peterson." He added that fans "can be assured his spirit is throughout the [sequel]. He may not be by Happy's side anymore, but he's on his shoulder."

After the Rocky star's death in February, Sandler published a tribute to his Happy Gilmore costar on social media.

"A true great man. Great dad. Great actor. Great athlete. So much fun to be around always," he wrote on Instagram. "Smart as hell. Loyal as hell. Funny as hell. Loved his sons more than anything. What a guy!! Everyone loved him. My wife and I had the best times with him every time we saw him."

"Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life," Weathers' family said in a statement after his death. "Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner and friend."

Happy Gilmore 2 will be released on Netflix on July 25. Returning cast members Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller and Dennis Dugan are joined by a list of newcomers that includes Travis Kelce and Bad Bunny.

The terms of the contest include filming a proposal at a theater "ideally" showing Together, posting it on social media with the #TogetherContest and tagging @together.movie, before Aug. 3.

"We will review your videos, and one lucky couple will get a wedding in Vegas courtesy of the Together team," the Neighbors actor said.

This isn't the first contest the independent film production company has announced for the upcoming release of the horror film. This week, Brie and Franco announced another giveaway providing tickets to the LA premier on July 23.

The couple who tied the knot in 2017, posted a steamy pic of them sharing an intimate kiss while imitating the Together billboard on Melrose Ave & North Detroit St.

The post encouraged fans to win tickets to the premier by recreating the Together billboard with their significant other using the #TogetherForever and tagging @neonrated.

"The perfect couple in 'the perfect date night horror movie.' TOGETHER. Join us 7.30," the Instagram caption read.

"Years into their relationship, Tim and Millie (Franco and Brie) find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the country, abandoning all that is familiar in their lives except each other," a synopsis for the movie reads. "With tensions already flaring, a nightmarish encounter with a mysterious, unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love, and their flesh."

Dave Franco and Alison Brie in Together

The couple spoke with PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly's Shutterstock Official Sundance Film Festival Portrait Studio where they discussed the after effects of the film on their relationship.

"I think we're more codependent than ever," Franco admitted.

"Yeah," agreed Brie with a laugh. "The film is about a codependent couple who's sort of in a bit of a rut. They're feeling dangerously codependent, having issues with that. And I think we went into it being like, 'Our relationship is much healthier and everything's good.' And then we came out on the other side a little more codependent."

Together hits theaters July 30.

Teddi Mellencamp is sharing how she's approaching parenting as she goes through treatment for cancer.

In a candid interview published Thursday, July 17, with Glamour, the Real House Housewives of Beverly Hills alum, 44, spoke about how her relationship with her kids — Slate, 12, Cruz, 10, and Dove, 5, whom she shares with ex Edwin Arroyave — has shifted since as she's gone through treatment for skin cancer.

"Some days are extremely difficult, because I can still remember what I used to be like before, and I want to still be all of those things to my kids. And I can't," Mellencamp candidly shared. "I am so lucky that I have such smart, loving, resilient children who have been there for me through all of this."

"There are some days where I'm at every single activity and feel like the old me. But there are others where I cry and get upset," she continued. "I feel hurt and so sad that I have to write on a piece of paper what my kids' days are going to entail, and none of it involves me because I can't do it."

"Some days, I can't even write on the paper. Parenting has been a lot of communication with my kids, my friends, and my family, saying, 'This is what I need.'"

Mellencamp went on to say that although it seems trivial, the old version of her thought that spending time with her kids watching television show wasn't necessarily "quality time."

"Now, I have such a different view on things," she explained. "We pick a favorite show and watch it together, and we laugh and get obsessed. It doesn't have to be running around all the time. It can be us just in the moment."

"Your resilience, tenacity, and strength have taught our children what a true warrior is," Arroyave wrote in his caption. "May God bless you with your best year ever."

Mellencamp has been open about her cancer journey, which began with multiple surgeries to remove melanomas on her back. Then, this past February, she shared that her melanoma had spread to her lungs and brain. But she's responding to treatment, as she said in an April Instagram post: "All tumors stage 4 (metastasized melanoma in my brain and lungs) shrunk or disappeared."

Before Connie Francis died, a new generation fell for 'Pretty Little Baby'

-

 • Before Connie Francis died, a new generation fell for 'Pretty Little Baby'

Melina Khan, USA TODAY July 17, 2025 at 7:03 PM

Connie Francis, the pop vocalist who died this week, was seeing a resurgence in popularity long after her '50s and '60s fame — thanks to TikTok.

Francis died Wednesday, July 16 at 87 after recently being hospitalized in an intensive care unit, where she was undergoing tests to find the source of her "extreme pain," according to her Facebook.

She was best known for her love songs, including "Stupid Cupid," "Who's Sorry Now" and "Where The Boys Are."

But younger generations may recognize her peppy voice from 1962 track "Pretty Little Baby," which has become popular among TikTokers as a backdrop for adorable animals, makeup tutorials and a slew of other videos.

Here's what to know about the song and its modern-day resurgence.

Connie Francis 'Pretty Little Baby' and 'Who's Sorry Now' pop singer dies at 87

'Pretty Little Baby' has been used over a million times on TikTok

"Pretty Little Baby" gained momentum on TikTok in May, with celebrities and influencer alike sharing videos to the song. North West and Kylie Jenner lip synced to the song and creators like Abbie Herbert and Brooke Monk also used the audio.

To date, the song has been used on more than one million TikTok videos. At its peak, "Pretty Little Baby" averaged over 600,000 daily creates on TikTok and hit No. 1 on both the app's Viral 50 and Top 50 charts, according to a press release.

"The huge viral success of 'Pretty Little Baby' is the perfect example of the power of music discovery on TikTok," Tracy Gardner, TikTok's global head of music business development, said in the release.

Singer Connie Francis poses while seated at London Airport, May 2nd 1962.

The song's popularity even got Francis herself to join TikTok in June.

"I'm flabbergasted and excited about the huge buzz my 1962 recording of 'Pretty Little Baby' is making all over the world," she said in a video on the page. "To think that a song I recorded 63 years ago is captivating new generations of audiences is truly overwhelming for me."

'She died happy knowing that this generation likes her music'

On Francis' TikTok page, comments were flooded with messages of condolences after her death, with many users expressing appreciation for the resurgence of "Pretty Little Baby."

"She died happy knowing that this generation likes her music," one person wrote. "You will be missed. Thank you for the music."

Another wrote, "RIP Connie Francis. She died knowing her song became famous again."

When was 'Pretty Little Baby' released?

"Pretty Little Baby" was released in 1962 as part of Connie Francis' album "Connie Francis Sings Second Hand Love & Other Hits." The song was not released as a single.

Francis told Billboard in May that she didn't remember recording the song until she listened to it.

"It's just a blessing to know that kindergarten kids know me and my music now. It's really thrilling," she told the outlet.

The track was one of 40 songs Francis recorded over four days in August 1961, according to Billboard.
