Derek Jeter is reflecting on his all-time favorite bet during his tenure on the New York Yankees

The legendary shortstop tells PEOPLE that he once earned a trip to a Michigan Wolverines game on George Steinbrenner's private plane

Jeter, who teamed up with BetMGM as the company's latest brand ambassador, stars in the company's new "legendary plays" commercial

Derek Jeter is no stranger to the world of responsible gaming.

During his 20-season tenure on the New York Yankees, the Hall of Fame shortstop racked up plenty of legendary plays on the field and quite a few legendary bets, as well — many of which stemmed from his love of college football, he tells PEOPLE, timed with his latest BetMGM partnership.

While some left Jeter allegedly paying off teammates in pennies ("I'm not admitting it, but it sounds like something I would do," he now jokes), his personal favorite bet secured him the ultimate game-day flex back in the day: A trip on George Steinbrenner's private plane.

"I bet Mr. Steinbrenner one time, Ohio State, Michigan. And if Michigan won, I got to use his plane to go to the following year's game," Jeter, now 51, tells PEOPLE of the late Yankees owner. "And Michigan won so I got to use his plane with a group of friends, we went to the game ... We used to always go back and forth, Ohio State and Michigan, every year."

"I don't even think he really remembered," he adds. "I just sort of reached out and said to someone, 'Hey, he lost the bet, so he has to give me his plane,' and the plane showed up."

Derek Jeter

Jeter's latest team-up with BetMGM sees The Captain, a five-time World Series champion, take on yet another major career role as brand ambassador. He stars in the company's latest "Legendary Plays" ad spot and will soon find himself as the face of an exclusive Jeter-themed slot game via BetMGM Casino.

In the commercial, Jeter walks the field at Yankee Stadium and recalls "where it happened," as glimpses of his career highlights flash on the screen. It was a trip down memory lane, he tells PEOPLE.

"It was kind of cool to see how I'm sort of in the background watching my plays, actually on the field at the same time, a couple of the plays that I made during my career," Jeter says of the ad. "So I think the finished product is pretty cool."

Jeter, who says he "couldn't be prouder" of his new partnership, adds BetMGM's push for "responsible gaming" made his decision to join the team even easier. Now, he follows in the footsteps of fellow sporting greats including Barry Sanders, Tim Howard and Wayne Gretzky as his face will appear across different promotional materials — and also online casino games featuring a current or former professional baseball player.

"I come from obviously being a professional athlete and the integrity of sport is number one. That's first and foremost, but I think their focus on responsible gaming is something that stood out to me," he says. "And they've made so much progress over the years and you just watch how gaming has really increased the fan interest throughout sports."

Jeter adds, "I was never really into fantasy sports, but I think the craze of fantasy sports started it because people are no longer just watching one particular game, they're watching all kinds of games. So, it's been fun to watch the evolution of betting."

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice pleaded guilty to charges connected to a high-speed crash in Dallas last year and agreed to a 30-day jail sentence that could precede NFL punishment, officials said Thursday.

Rice will also receive five years of probation for causing a "chain reaction" smash-up on March 30 of last year when he was behind the wheel of a Lamborghini that veered onto the shoulder of the North Central Expressway in Dallas, prosecutors said.

"I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property," Rice said in a statement he released through his attorney and prosecutors. "I fully apologize for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families."

Rice was behind the wheel of a Lamborghini that was making "multiple aggressive maneuvers around traffic" at 119 mph, according to the Dallas District Attorney's Office.

"This caused a chain reaction that affected multiple vehicles," prosecutors said. "After the collision, Mr. Rice failed to check on the welfare of the victims and fled on foot."

He pleaded guilty to a pair of felonies, causing a collision involving a serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury.

This case's resolution could open the door for the NFL to levy its own penalty against Rice, who played in just four games last season, making 24 catches for 288 yards and two touchdowns. He missed most of 2024 due to an injury to his lateral collateral ligament.

In his rookie 2023 season, Rice caught 79 passes for 938 yards and seven scores.

"We have been closely monitoring all developments in the matter which remains under review," NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said in a statement Thursday. "There's no timeline on next steps."

Rice will have some freedom to decide when he'll serve this time.

"The Judge is allowing Mr. Rice to find a time or times to serve the jail time and Mr. Rice/his attorney have to follow up with the court about when he will serve the jail time," according to a statement from Dallas DA spokesperson Claire Crouch.

A Chiefs rep could not be immediately reached for comment on Thursday. Chiefs training camp opens on Monday at Missouri Western State University.

The team's first exhibition game is set for Aug. 9 against the Arizona Cardinals with the regular season kicking off on Sept. 5 against the Los Angeles Chargers in a game to be played at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo.

Rice, who played at nearby SMU and was drafted No. 55 overall in the 2023 NFL draft, urged motorists not to follow in his lead-footed steps.

"There has been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole," he said.

"I urge everyone to mind the speed limit, drive safe and drive smart."

The Rice crash occurred about 2 1/2 years after Las Vegas Raiders WR Henry Ruggs III, drove drunk at speeds up to 156 mph on Las Vegas street and caused a fiery collision that killed a woman and her dog on Nov. 2, 2021.

Ruggs was sentenced to three to 10 years behind bars. His earliest parole-eligibility date is Aug. 5, 2026, Nevada Department of Corrections records showed.

Dallas County DA John Creuzot said Rice was "fortunate" not to have suffered or caused more extensive injuries.

"A vehicle in the wrong hands can be as dangerous as any weapon," Creuzot said in a statement. "We are extremely fortunate that no lives were lost that day and Mr. Rice is fortunate to have walked away unharmed. We hope he takes this as an opportunity to mature and leads by example moving forward."

Super Bowl 52 champion Bryan Braman dies at age 38

 • Super Bowl 52 champion Bryan Braman dies at age 38

Jack McKessy, USA TODAY July 17, 2025 at 10:14 PM

Bryan Braman, a seven-year NFL veteran and member of the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl 52 championship team, has died, according to agent Sean Stellato. Braman was 38.

USA TODAY Sports reported earlier this month that Braman had been seeking treatment for a rare form of "life-threatening" cancer, after a February diagnosis. A GoFundMe organized to help fund his treatment raised over $88,000 since it launched that same month, including a $10,000 donation from former teammate J.J. Watt.

Watt and Stellato were some of several people to post tributes to Braman on social media after his death.

"Rest in Peace brother," Watt wrote on X. "Gone far too soon."

— JJ Watt (@JJWatt) July 17, 2025

Stellato posted a picture of a signed Braman jersey to his Instagram and wrote: "My heart hurts. I love you Bryan."

Stellato told ESPN that Braman had two daughters, aged 8 and 11.

Braman played three years with the Texans and four years with the Eagles over his seven-year NFL career, which ran from 2011 to 2017. He was a notable member of the Eagles' Super Bowl 52-winning team in 2017, blocking a punt against the Atlanta Falcons in the divisional round and recording one tackle in the Super Bowl upset over the Tom Brady-led Patriots.

Cowboys LB Micah Parsons: Jerry Jones overcomplicating contract

-

Micah Parsons knows how it all ends, this contract negotiation with the Dallas Cowboys stretching into a second year. He still wondered aloud why ownership is taking its time as the market jumps to new heights.

"I'm just going to get mine no matter what," Parsons said at his youth football camp. "You know what I mean? Like, the markets change every year. Their salary cap went up, like, another 18 percent this year. So, if you want to know contracts, all the contracts are based off of percentage. Like, each player, a high-paid player, takes a percentage of the salary cap. So, it's not really the number. It goes off by the salary cap."

To Parsons' point, the Cowboys have been here before.

The waiting game ending with new contracts last summer for CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott pushed to the top of the market at both positions.

Parsons, a two-time All-Pro pick with 12 sacks or more in each of his first four seasons, committed to being a part of the Cowboys' offseason and summer while waiting for his deal to be finalized. He said a coaching change, from Mike McCarthy to Brian Schottenheimer, and the arrival of new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus factored into his decision to be around the team.

That doesn't mean he'll be on the field when the Cowboys start training camp. But Parsons pointed to owner Jerry Jones as the one with the power to determine just how quickly peace is restored.

"We obviously wanted to get done early," Parsons said on the "Six Feet Under" podcast.

"We want that relief off our backs. But, obviously, ownership is always gonna make it drag out -- make it more complicated than it has to be. Lack of communication and that standpoint. But, you know, I just always say, God has me this far, he ain't done with me yet, so, you know, I just keep working, keep going, and then when it comes, I'm gonna be ready. But, you know, ain't gonna be no drop off."

Both sides know the cost of signing Parsons will not decrease. The Browns gave pass rusher Myles Garrett $40 million per season and more than $123 million guaranteed on a four-year deal in March. The Raiders signed pass rusher Maxx Crosby to a three-year extension worth $35.5 million per season and $91.5 million guaranteed.

Parsons isn't afraid to point out the cost of the Cowboys playing the waiting game.

"We wanted to do the contract last year," Parsons said. "They were just kind of like, 'We want to do Dak and CeeDee.' Then you go out there and perform again and, you know, you would think, like, alright, we'll get it done early. We know there's some guys that's about to get ready to get repaid, like Myles (Garrett), you know, Maxx (Crosby) is gone. So you'd think like, hey, let's get ahead of that, you know what I mean?"
